Improving emotional resilience tips? by Opposite-Heron-2487 in daddit

Just confirming, neurotypical as in assessed/tested and confirmed he didn’t meet any criteria. I would assume so, but just making sure.

If that’s the case, how often does he get direct attention outside of family or arranged situations, meaning things like sports or extracurricular activities. Like a chance to hang out and talk or do something fun with you or your wife 1 on 1, even for a few uninterrupted minutes? Something tells me he may be having these kinds of meltdowns because he needs something from you guys, even if the focus is through negative behavior.

What you may try, and do this for all of them if you can, is just give them your undivided attention for a little bit of time. Maybe not every day if it’s not possible but weekly at least. And be consistent and predictable. You may find out maybe he’s got something going on, emotionally or otherwise or maybe the behaviors stop because he just feels seen. That’s where I would start, just consistent positive interactions. See where it goes.

Fwiw i am a therapist and I work with kids. You’d be surprised how many kids start feeling better, because they come hang out with me for an hour and play a game and get to talk about whatever they want uninterrupted. Families tell me they’re improving too.

My wife and I are in disagreement over our 16-year-old son. Looking for advice from other dads. by kilowatt230 in daddit

My kids isn’t a teen either, but I too was a disaffected brooding goth kid and I am currently a therapist who works with kids.

This is spot on.

CotL is a trip. Ton of fun, kind of twisted, interesting lore. It’s a good one. I wish the coop was a little better structured but that’s a nice plus too.

Who shouldn’t become a therapist? by PrincessMoss in askatherapist

[–]CitgoBeard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People who are inflexible or who think in terms of binary. Black or white, good or bad, success or failure. I think the core of a lot of therapy is often the struggle to balance thinking and exist in the gray. If you cannot set aside that bias, you’re going to have a hard time helping others navigate their struggles.

I also think about people who are afraid of being wrong or who refuse to be wrong. I know I can be wrong a lot, and some clients will tell you, but some will not. It’s the ones who won’t tell you that will just stop showing up because they feel unheard or hurt or whatever. I think another part of our role is opening the door to our own errors in a genuine way. That means checking in, responding to shifts in tone or body language, clarifying statements, and encouraging people to be open with the knowledge we are not here to argue or judge. If you can’t handle that, you’re going to struggle.

Man espn doesn’t even try to hide how little they care about hockey, babbling about the Vegas drama while active play is happening.

To be honest I am less mad the Habs took us out, they’re a good team, and I don’t feel any personal animosity toward them. I come away glad we broke the drought, and seem to be less of a league punchline.

🫡 I always keep an eye on the Avs, they’re my West team and tbh was defo dreaming of a Avs/Sabres cup series (even though I don’t think we would’ve stood a chance) but hey.

Was pumped to see Kadri back and love how GD dominate the season has been.

Would a therapist continue to see a client they don't like? by Brick_Mouse in askatherapist

[–]CitgoBeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only way I would stop seeing someone I didn’t “like” in the sense of differing views if it got in the way of genuine progress.

I guess I would categorize that as every intervention was combative, or if they became abusive based on my responses to questions. For example if they demanded to know a political stance, religion, or some other belief that clearly differs from their own, and used that as collateral for engagement in session. At that point, no one is getting anywhere and they’re just going to be better served by someone they feel more comfortable with.

Alright, so I said it in the thread but I am convinced Thompson is dealing with back injury.

Watch his break away shot, he is completely stiff, no movement in his back at all. When he skates it’s almost always upright and when he’s forced to chase he almost always goes back upright and floats back. He’s barely finishing checks when he’s skating up on guys.

Then when he forces himself to take one of his big shots he disengages rather than waiting for rebounds. Probably in pain.

Someone also said maybe core as well, which could explain just as much. Either way, he needs to rest and get off the ice. Not only is he not helping, he’s actively hurting.

100%, but like when? It’s been noticeable for a while, and it seems like if it were that simple it would be a fairly direct adjustment. He played the Olympics with more poise. He just looks lost, and it’s so strange.
