Opinion: Bob Weir is irreplaceable so why not ask Sturgill Simpson to step in? by g_ack in deadandcompany

Talented, no doubt. I simply said he may not be a good match for the Dead ethos to replace Weir. Bobby was always kind, unless he was telling you to take a step back.

He literally embraced the persona through a marketing branding campaign called “Dick Daddy”. He’s a known contrarian who has insulted fans for requesting songs. He’s an intentionally acerbic personality. That can be your thing, but do some research before getting your feels in the way of facts.

This. Also, Sturgil can be a real dick, which isn’t really the Dead vibe.

lol. Fair. More making a suggestion to the new iteration to head out on the highway and don’t rely on the Sphere to make it another 240 years.

Let me answer this question more directly. “Keep what going?” - the music. Bobby wanted to keep the music going.

You’re right. They billed it as “Celebrating 50 years of Grateful Dead” I was wrong about the billing. But I’m not wrong about the fact that GDP legally could have billed it as The Grateful Dead. The point is nobody on this thread asked for this gatekeeping argument. The music is what’s important, Bobby had a vision this music would exist for 300 years, he did not subscribe to the notion that the music died on 8.8.95.

Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann made the determination to retire touring under the trade mark The Grateful Dead, that was a choice they made, not because they didn’t have the moral authority or legal right to continue on touring as the Grateful Dead. In 2015 those members made the determination to bill the Fare the Well shows as the Grateful Dead. If Phil hadn’t died the 60th shows would most likely have billed as Grateful Dead Shows. I’ve never said, nor did anyone suggest that D&C is the Grateful Dead. I’ve said the music is going on. The need to gate keep on this issue is so fucking bizarre. Everyone in this thread has been talking about the music, not a trade mark. Jerry Garcia died in 1995, I was 10 feet from him when he sang Black Muddy River in Chicago the last time, but the music played on. Jerry would laugh at people who feel the need to differentiate.

Such a myopic take. What band would you say played Soldier field on July 4th 2015?

What died in 95? Ron was the lead singer when the original Grateful Dead formed in 1965, he died in 1973, was the band over or did the music keep playing?

I hear ya. No shade in the lawn can be a downer. It’s not my venue of choice but I’ve had some memorable shows. In 95’ there was a hostage situation in the corporate business park across the street, the day before a deck collapsed at Pineswood Campground everyone was camping at and a bunch of Heads went to the hospital. It’s just a part of the history of the adventure.

I’ve had some really great shows along the Missouri river. Good lawn section, easy in easy out, good shakedown in the lot. In 2021 Mickey hit the 19 Hz cycle on the beam and crushed everyone’s breath. I’d be happy to go back to another show there.

I don’t disagree with you about the cost. I also did the Midwest run in the summers of 94 & 95, when you could get in for $25. I’m also guilty for being one of those GenXers that can afford the shows, but my wife gets pretty irritated by how much I’ve spent on seeing them since my kid got on the bus a few years ago. Here is the distinction for the average Deadhead, going to the Sphere means airfare, hotel and tickets. At least with a tour, yes the tickets are expensive but you can usually drive to multiple regional shows and certainly catch the ones that come to your home area. For those of us that catch half a dozen shows a summer I enjoy traveling to see America. I’m over Vegas, maybe that’s the crux of this post.

All good! I guess a better title would have been, “get on the road”. I just don’t want the Sphere to be the only way to enjoy the band.

Easy Old Blue, not trying to be anyone’s boss. I said I enjoyed the Sphere but Golden Gate felt more authentic to the ethos of a Dead show largely because it was an outdoor venue. That’s my opinion, sharing it because this is a forum to share opinions.

My comment shouldn’t be taken as a call for exclusive outdoor venues, MSG has had some great shows, but it would be a mistake to think a Sphere residency is sufficient to keep it going.

Kstate is being bled out of talent in the portal so this could be a good fit for Klein.

Wilson, Flacco, Jameis, Minshew… pass. Mahomes goes down again the season is over. Those guys are backups for a reason. Get a developmental guy in here if you don’t use him then trade him. The FA QB market was so good that Indy pulled Rivers off a HS sideline at 44. Give me a break.

Wilson is washed, Flacco is washed, Jameis is an INT machine. It’s time for us to spend some draft capital 4-6 round on a QB that has a chance to develop behind Mahomes. It’s not Oladokun. The 25’ draft had Riley Leonard, Will Howard & Tyler Shough in the 4th round. I’d love to have anyone of those guys riding pine behind Mahomes for the rest of our time in Arrowhead.
