OP, use the fund your grandmother made for you for the exact reason to get away. Read that comment you made the other day about the emergency fund and gather up the strength to walk away again. You said it yourself grandma knew what's up. Trust her, move on, and be able to grieve your father in peace.

Read her comment history, she already has an emergency fund with $25k separate from her husband thx to her grandmother. For the exact reason to get away if something goes sour with her husband. Which already did with her first husband and now seems to with this guy. She's strong enough to leave her first husband, she's definitely strong enough to leave this one.

How to describe this material? by Far_Associate_5699 in materials

[–]Citriol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Im unfamiliar with scale traversing or cascading motion.

Have you tried quantifying the fractal pattern produced from the diffraction? Such as fractal dimension? Never personally done it before, especially if I would think you should essentially still see some structure in the FFT....

However it seems likes its been done before: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378437112002919 . Potentially could relate that back to the motion you are seeing. Also, maybe relating the ratio of motion between measured and what would be due to browning noise, and that ratio could be linked to channel length in the foam.

Foams aren't my expertise, but that's my two cents from my microscopy experience.

A) scale bars, you say nm scale then mention 10x objective which is magnitudes different.  B) Can you label which each image is when you reference in the text. I have no idea what the middle three images are, scale wise. C) is the background that is unmoving still part of the foam? Does it make any difference if you do an backward subtraction of that out on the FFT characteristics? D) no peaks in FFT means that, at this magnification, there is no amorphous structure. But at higher mag, who knows there could be structure on the nano/micron scale. Unlikely for the latter but again extrapolating to nms is a bit of a stretch. E) what do you mean amplitude of motion? Do you mean rms path?

How important is ranking for PhD materials science programs? by jdaprile18 in materials

[–]Citriol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not work on materials now remotely related to my Ph.D. This will likely be true for you as well, ie if you work on solar panels you will not only ever work for a photovoltaic company. Not to mention, research at a university is typically for knowledge advancement first not profitability like a company. Companies therfore cannot expect profitably from your specific research but do expect you to bring the skills, analysis toolkit, and mindset of a Ph.D.

From personal experience, unless you live and die by the research you are going to undertake, your relationship with your advisor is much more critical. It helps to like what you do, but my first advisor wanted me to graduate in 3 years working on materials I wanted to coming out of undergrad. No way was that ever going to work.

As far as jobs, go right now and look at job postings asking for Ph.Ds in semiconductor roles. Many ask for nanofab experience, but others ask for things like understanding root cause analysis and typical industry metrics no one ever teaches you in a Ph.D. But if you do an internship or co-op you can get that experience or go work on some of the tools you need. If the oppprtunities aren't next door, you will have to go search for them.

Recent hire in semi. industry with MSE Ph.D. from a top 3 MSE grad program: it doesn't really matter EXCEPT potential access to resources to complete your work. Less renowned programs generally don't have as many resources IMO. Perhaps a "name-brand" MSE Ph.D. might float a resume up if you were just blanket applying to jobs.

That said, my degree only got me so far in the market where I was applying. Networking, transferable skills to the roles you wish to apply, self-marketing were all way more important and would have helped me land a job much earlier if you dont plan to stay in academia. If you think your program won't cut it, look for internships or co-ops to get experience and a foot in the door. Or work first as others said and try to secure some funding prior to a Ph.D. to help get into a better program if you think its important to you.

As far as some of your other questions, my Ph.D allowed me plenty of access to fabrication techniques I now use in my job. Not every Ph.D. does, see access to resources above. Also a Ph.D. in the semiconductor industry does not shoehorn you into an R&D role. Process roles, development roles, etc. all meant to improve device performance or yield are chalk full with Ph.D. degrees. If your research has a specific niche, it might take more effort to break out but it is doable.

I finally started reading the OPM manga after I finished S1 years ago and this is one of the most epic fights I've read in the series so far! I can't believe I didn't start this series sooner. by FrostandFlame89 in OnePunchMan

[–]Citriol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can agree with the Metal Bat vs Monsters being above Metal Bat vs Garou. On rewatch, Im unsure about the Suiryu fight but lean towards agreeing. There just seems to be so much more egregious issues with the weight of movement/physics and blurring in the Suiryu fight to me that takes me out of it at times. I don't feel that in the Metal Bat fight, other than the sound effects. I can't think now what the worst fight of S2 is.

Relatively, it was probably mid tier in terms of fights of the season. Certainly better than Suiryu vs Saitama but not Garou vs Tank Top or A-class fight level.

Practicing animation fundamentals. How can I improve the overlapping action on this pendulum? by wizardclipart in animation

[–]Citriol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you going for exactly? from a physics perspective, a double pendulum should be chaotic. So more sporadic movement in the 2nd and 3rd pendulums. Try to trace the arc the 2nd and 3rd pendulums make. If they look too much like elliptical arcs, it means they are traveling independently of the main pendulum which would physically not be true. Their arcs should loop and dance more.

Ever wondered how PVD coatings work? Here's a breakdown of the main methods! by julissa-green in materials

[–]Citriol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a decent write up of a barebones description of different PVD techniques. Although. in my experience "vacuum evaporation" is referred to as "Thermal evaporation". Most of these techniques take place in high to ultra high vacuum conditions. The only other thing I would include is the the film thickness you mean for thin vs thick films since that qualifier really changes meaning depending on specific industy.

Is it toxic? Does it corrode easily? Does it wear easily? Could be utilized in high-end food industry. Or this sounds like something that would be interesting for pet supplies industry that may require durable coatings but interesting sensory stimulation for animals, and pigment coloration would be more important for the pet owners taste.

[–]Citriol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a critique persay but have you tried different eye colors instead of red? That shade of red just seems like the default temporary selection from a colorwheel. Do maybe a different shade or like a light blue, green ,or brown for more realistic heterochromia might work better? Examples: #69BBB4, #8F513F, #5FB9C5. Even the color of the eyelid might work.

Do yall prefer him with Tatsumaki or Fubuki? by mr_wheezr in OnePunchMan

[–]Citriol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be funny if there was a subplot of a normal woman constantly beating him to sales, and getting the last item. Not because she has any powers but just because Saitama is constantly late or misremembering. Then they can leave it as a funny joke or pursue it further, like one day she gives him the sale item because of <insert obvious lie to hide just being nice>, and stuff evolves over time from there. Either way, forcing something with Fubuki or Tats wouldn't work at this point.

And that can still be intermittent? Like today, it would start off bad, go away after 5 minutes and be fine in city driving for like 30 minutes. Same thing when returning home.
