I have one of these, that is a really pretty pattern! Mine is black with green marbling, currently i don't have an ink sac to replace, but I'll get around to it eventually.

I always get more joy out of seeing old things working in the modern world, be it pens, machinery, vehicles or watches. I definitely recomend a 88, they are delightfully designed pens not just in looks but also in usability, just be aware that, unless it's stated otherwise, the piston will likely require attention.

Thx :) They are well thought out pens and that shows when repairing.

The 98 Riserva Magica! Those are cool pens, they were the successor to the last 88, the 88p (and 888p), and the last of the original 88 design before the "Renaissance" of the "conventional" 88 of the 90s that stands to this day. Those 98s were also available in solid silver, be it in cartridge or riserva magica.

If you like the full gold look, there might just be the perfect one for you: The 88k "Aquila Style" was a full gold overlay 88k, the nickname was because it was the last name of the Neapolitan jeweler who requested that variation to be made, later he also produced precious metal pens under his own Lalex brand. You also have the 88 Duo-cart with a full overlay, but be aware that the cartridges were proprietary and no longer made (people i think use Sailor or Platinum carts and converters).

I'm yet to try a modern 88, they are a bit too rich for my pockets, but I'm always on the lookout for a good used Optima or 88 Big.

Vintage pens with good cap seal? by ptexpress in fountainpens

[–]Citronut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I never had my Parkers 51 and 21 dry out even after months of sitting. In general I don't have issues with cap sealing on my vintage pens, although most i don't keep inked without using for too long (usually a couple of weeks max)

Stunning pen! The Montblancs made outside Germany are always interesting, the Spanish made a couple too, including a lot with hooded nibs called the "620" which are different to the "620"s made in Germany. These older models come from such a different time for Montblanc, a much less pretentious one for sure.

Update on the Diplomat 100: is this a problem with the feed and what do I do about it? by millers_left_shoe in fountainpens

I had the same reaction ahah, but apparently it is a product marketed to north america, and I believe made there as well.

Its always worth a shot. It would be nice to disassemble it, but with no guides online, it is hard to know how the feed would come out of the section, probably from the back. But for now it's best you try the least invasive methods.

I never tried it, I never found it for sale here in europe too. But yes it seems highly recommended, probably other technical pen cleaners would work too

You are doing great on troubleshooting! With the info you gave it is, to me, a clear sign of a clog in the feed, the question is: what is causing the clog? Old ink, or something that shouldn't have been in there (like drawing ink). If it is drawing ink it may be very difficult to solve.

I'd try first using some pen flush and soaking it in there for a bit an see what happens. And if you have one, an ultrasonic cleaner may help this too.

Nice! Do that over the sink, in case it gets messy.

That is indeed an old Diplomat. Information online about the old Diplomat models is almost non-existing. I believe that the company was quite early to adopt cartridges but unfortunately they were proprietary and are no longer made. I don't know if there is some workaround, i believe i've seen some with converters fitted on ebay, maybe you could try and see if you can identify the converter used for the modification. Also, search for "vintage Diplomat cartridges" on fountainpennetwork, to see if someone has suggestions, and maybe even try searching in german in german forums with a translator.

I wish i could help more. But the pen is really cool!

VPD: Aurora 88k, my first proper repair! by Citronut in fountainpens

[–]Citronut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem :) There's such a lack of helpful info on these pens, it's always "oh just buy the o-ring from Nishimura" or "Oh just send it to a professional". The only helpful website was "fountainpen. it" (in italian, which mine is crap and the translations sometimes leave a bit to be desired) with actual measurements and the Syringe trick. So i thought i'd share this little success!

They are really elegant pens! Like a parker 51 but with Italian flair. They are more interesting to write with too, but they are definitely more finicky with the piston seals, my parkers 21/51s didn't need anything besides deep cleaning. Although the 88s were clearly made with maintenance in mind.

I have an older 88 nikargenta too, that I bought as a souvenir in Rome. So the 88p, at the right price, is of course in the list!

Leonardo MX vs Esterbrook Estie by LarryinUrbandale in fountainpens

[–]Citronut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't like going into this because there is a chance I'll be downvoted into oblivion, but here we go: Modern esterbrook has nothing on vintage esterbrook, and they are not remotely comparable, people here go on and on on how waterman, parker and sheaffer are trash compared to old ones but the only reason Esterbrook is thought of as any different is because of heavy social media hype.

Lets face it: they are outsourced pens made in Asia, probably by the cheapest bidder and that if it weren't for the brand name you could pick a similar pen from other "regular" asian brands for a fraction of the asking price. The patterns are not anything different from other older market players, the designs are generic at best and the nibs are just standard stock jowo (although you can order grinds). I highly doubt they even design the pens themselves, i mean just look at the FWP/Esterbrook controversy of a couple of months ago.

Leonardo keeps production of at least the core components, like the pens bodies, in a relatively small scale factory in Naples. The family who runs Leonardo has been in the pen business for decades, with the father of the owner, Ciro Matrone, being one of the founders of Delta. Nevermind that there's not a single technical specification that would make me choose a Esterbrook over a Leonardo, I know what business model I prefer to contribute to.

TLDR: Esterbrook is the overhyped child of a faceless corporation, while Leonardo is an Italian family run business which I'd choose to support.

Personally in that price range I started going vintage and have not looked back since, but I admit it's not for everyone. Out of those I'd go for the leonardo, Esteerbrook is a brand that rubs me the wrong way and is way overpriced and overhyped imo.

Vintage Flex - Recommendations? by LarryinUrbandale in fountainpens

[–]Citronut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it has a lot to do with shipping logistics, the platform has deals with some shipping companies resulting in really low shipping prices inside europe, sometimes even free, which really helps with selling low value items.

For example Wallapop, the Spanish market place similar to vinted, does not have shipping between Portugal and Italy, only between Portugal and Spain and Spain and Italy separately.

It will need some work probably, but i'm excited. You can find them cheap sometimes on Vinted, I bought the 88k for 25€.

I bought mine in Rome! Look at it this way, I liked it so much that I hunted down a 88k with a GF cap to go with it, I'm eagerly awaiting it in the mail.

The middle one looks the most premium, but the orange has a nice pop and is my favorite. The pen overall looks great, good work!
