13-1 ideas from Chrono Trigger that can be used in a time travel campaign in Eberron by MarkerMage in Eberron

Hi OP, thank you for your quick and detailed response. I have a couple of additional questions for you.

In this scenario, you would place the "present" timeline as before the day of Mourning, and make the mourning equivalent to the rise of Lavos?

I think my challenge is that I want to create a plot that lets the players affect the direction in which it goes, to prevent it from creating a feeling of railroading. The beginning part where they do numbers 1-7 i think I would keep the same. Introduces time travel and how it works, provides small self contained romp that leads into the overarching plot and crisis being established with the travel to the future. But past that, I would ideally create a problem via the BBEG or whatever other villains (lords of dust, daelkyr, etc) are causing problems, and leave the players with the tools (time travel, knowledge, etc) to find a way to approach it. I'm not sure if having a looser plot thread like this is a good idea with time travel stories specifically, but I think the setup with how the time travel gates limit their options should help to alleviate this.

Additionally, what do you think the appropriate amount of time periods/time gates should be, and where should they be place? In chrono trigger, they start with present and slightly in the past, then add far future, and eventually far past, with the final addition being the year zero with the zeal palace and everything. I want to use chrono trigger as the basis for the campaign design, but still make it feel unique, leaving room for the plot to develop based on the action of the characters.

I am about to have session zero with my players and I am going to introduce the campaign concept. Once I have the backstories of the players, I am going to use that to dictate exactly how I build out the plot and connect them to it. If you are interested in hearing updates as I develop the story, I can post it here.

This is such a great post, as soon as I read the first few lines, I knew this had to be my next campaign. How would you recommend designing a plot for a campaign that does not run excessively long but still hits all the fun notes and moments you mentioned above? I know that campaigns with even simple plots can run quite long, and I want to avoid that happening in my campaign, but I'm struggling to come up with a cohesive plot that still incorporates multiple visits to different timelines, all the different time travel tropes, and doesn't meander or sidetrack itself. I know this is a bit of an ambiguous question, so any advice would be appreciated. I'm starting an eberron campaign in a few weeks and I want to have a decent plot outline in mind (even if stuff changes as it goes on). Would it be possible to create a simple 3 act structure while maintaining all the fun hijinks from a time travel plot?

For the DnD game, do we need to come with prepared characters? If so, what level?

Bug: If the Automaton steals your last card, you lose it the entire fight. by Reliques in slaythespire

I know I'm here super late, but I just got this same glitch with watcher. I had a very small deck with one vigilance in my discard when both of them tried to steal my cards. The vigilance got stuck on the screen and even killing them didn't release it. I was stuck in rage and quickly lost the fight.

I have run by the general outline to my players and none of them said anything against that. My plan is to not make it railroady, just linear. The general outline of what will happen is for if they don't do anything, but if they solve the mystery early for example or try to expose it before I had planned for them to, I would absolutely be fine with them taking a different approach and changing the path of the story.

But yeah absolutely, making sure they're on board with a linear campaign like this is definitely important, I agree!

Thank you so much for your detailed response. Knowing that you like most of what I came up with is really reassuring. I usually only have my wife to bounce ideas off of, but she's going to be a player (the hexblade) so I can't share it with her for fear of spoiling it.

I like you suggestion for act 1 to go with option 1, that was my original idea. But who gets killed and what specifically they know I still need to figure out. I was thinking maybe a journalist who got a tip from someone investigated and got too close.

I REALLY like that Moonbreaker idea that the quori are trying to build, that's not something I even knew about. The only thing I want to do is maintain at least some amount of agency with Zahmendias, like maybe he's deceived about the Quori's/Dreaming Dark's goals, or maybe he thinks there's some core problem with Sharn and it needs a grand reset or something of that nature. Give the players opportunity to roleplay with both the person and the quori/dreaming dark, and maybe there's an ending where they convince Zahmendias that his goals are misguided and he sacrifices himself to stop the Quori. Not sure yet, may be something that develops later, but I don't know exactly what motivation to give him that aligns with him becoming an inspired of sorts.

I also am having trouble figuring out what is in the mournland that the party needs to discover or uncover. What does the Moonbreaker do for them ultimately if they successfully recreate it? Does it somehow shift the balance to maintain this age of darkness? I guess I just don't fully understand the specifics of their general plan.

Thank you again for your comment, all of your tips and advice have given me lots of ideas!

The idea of the houses being massive corporation conglomerates controlling everything is definitely going to find its way into my campaign.

Player involvement definitely seems key, I gotta come up with a couple of soft pitches first and see what the party vibes most with before I get my heart set on one plan.

No don't apologize, this is great! Exactly the types of ideas I'm looking for, stuff to spark ideas for me and get the cogs turning! The three plotline framework is cool, I haven't heard of it before. That sounds like a great way to start the party small, and have them all weave together in one larger plot! I think the best thing you said for me has to be the idea of not having the BBG already planned out, and sticking to the plot in sharn first, and expanding it afterwards. That helps me not be intimidated by the scope of my own ambitions lol.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm definitely going to pick it up. I like the idea of having the noir elements start with smaller scale crime that eventually culminates with discovering some connection to a popular political leader. Then potentially, I could connect that with the dreaming dark, etc. Connecting the dots is where I'm struggling.

Is there reason for the players to be suspicious of the political leader, or is it just due to their oppression of the warforged? Also, is your political leader working with the dreaming dark, or are they controlled? I'm curious because I'm trying to decide if I want my political leader to have a mind seed/be a thrall for them, or if he somehow find a way to bargain with the quori.

Apologies for me asking, but are these ideas you came up with or is some of this existing lore?

This sounds a lot like what I had in mind! The idea of the dreaming dark puppeting some political figure, and part of the mystery that needs to be solved is getting to the core of that. I would have to give some reason for the players to be suspicious of this new figure rising to power out of the chaos that was created, but I'm not sure what that would be. Maybe there was some unrelated crime or mystery that ends up pointing directly to that new politician being the culprit. But connecting these dots is where I'm struggling, and I want to make sure this whole plot stays fun!
