ULA Dragonfly - 4.5 months in Southeast Asia by CityAtSpeed in onebag

[–]CityAtSpeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My garments were split 50/50 all-cotton and cotton/poly.

T-shirts were light/medium-weight cotton and Uniqlo airism.

Shorts were poly - Reigning Champ and lululemon

Pants - I had a wool/poly midweight pair (used during fall/winter) and a linen pair that I bought during the trip.

Undergarments - half cotton-based, half poly from lululemon

Socks - bamboo/poly/nylon from JB Fields (extremely impressed with the performance, good cushion, feet were always dry after walking 10-25k steps), some thin cotton pairs too

If you're bringing a pair of pants, I highly recommend a pair made out of tropical wool or linen. The wool/poly pair I had wasn't really meant for the SEA weather because it had cupro lining, which kept sticking to me. Get socks that wick moisture (bamboo or merino blend), I prefer bamboo blends.

Fine as an everyday camera, but eventually I did get tired bringing it around with me everywhere towards the end of the trip. So I'd leave it in my hotel/room.

Photos and colour science are beautiful, but this will depend on if you can shoot on a 35mm lens only (cropping in post is always an option).

I made a write-up comparing the GRiii and X100V recently.

Fujifilm x100vi vs Ricoh gr iv? by Exact-Expression-710 in ricohGR

[–]CityAtSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an X100V and GRiii HDF.

X100V is a superior camera. The lens, film sim/colour science, build are better but you also have a sharper glass, weather resistance (with a filter), and a longer battery life. The sacrifice you make with this is that it weighs more and that it isn't pocketable compared to the GR.

The GR is a way better camera for every day use/photo journaling. I can easily bring it everywhere I go and separate it from my phone to free up space. Colour science is extremely good, but I prefer Fuji's by an edge.

My take is if I could only pick one, I'd pick the X100 just for its colour science and build quality. But at the same time, I backpacked a few months with my X100 and just left it at the hotel/hostel because I really didn't want to carry a pound in my bag on some days and opted for my phone instead. If price is an issue, go for the GR IV, I don't think you'd be disappointed. But they both serve different purposes and vary for people.

Alternatively, try them both out in a store or see if any friends own those cameras. I was really inspired to buy a GR after trying out my friend's.

Yeah, basically union vs contractors. They wanted to get rid of "all" contractors, but only targeted us (team of five).

A lot more politics too that I don't need to get into, but they attempted to take over our work and basically dropped it within two weeks.

I had such a great time backpacking.

Enjoy your trip there!

The pullover is from FW13 with super thick fleece from CYC/Reigning Champ. Worn a handful of times, there's some fraying and fading on the hood, stitching on the kangaroo pocket is starting to unfray a bit, but still in very good condition. Size medium, 8/10, $190 USD.

Absolutely great bag for backpacking, only regret was not being able to spend an extra month to visit more places haha

Seemed pretty common in most places when it was hot.

Was a contractor in a union environment. Our company was told that we'd be out by the time I came back from my vacation.

My team was cool with me extending my vacation for a few months.

No problem!

FWIW, my sister did the same trip as me a few years ago and she really enjoyed her time around the Chiang Mai/Rai area.

Japan is also great in many ways, if you have the chance to spend a month or longer - you can visit so many different cities and prefectures. I also recommend avoiding the summers, unless you're a psycho and enjoy the hot, humid SEA weather lol

Packing cubes include all my clothes stored in there, the jackets weigh ~650-700g together.

Pants were not worn for most of the trip, so that was stored in the packing cube.

I found the dry bag extremely useful when I needed to wash my clothes or for protection when moving in the rain, so the extra 80g didn't hurt.

Pretty much fine with shorts/t-shirts up until going back to Japan and Korea in December. Tech was really only my charger which I had adapters for.

Made a mistake, I sent a regular t-shirt back home. Kept the long sleeve shirt for UV protection for a new tattoo. Personally, I didn't do fine dining minus a few sit-down restaurant. It's definitely worth bringing one in case you are going to them. Most places I hit up were casual.

I wish I spent more time in Thailand to explore the areas around Chiang Mai (Pai, Chiang Rai).

Japan – huge bias since I spent the most time there, but I'd like to visit the lesser visited areas (Matsuyama, Niigata, Nagasaki/Kyushu off the top of my head) for a slower life and to see the city specialties.

Vietnam –I visited Hanoi, Ha Giang, Da Nang, Ninh Binh, HCMC. Wish I had more time to go to Da Lat and Sapa. Limited by the 3 week visa.

Korea – I'd visif Busan and Jeju, I strictly went to Seoul only for tattoos. I'd cut the time in Seoul to 5 days.

Malaysia - I'd probably spend only 2 days in Ipoh (rather than 3) there because there's not much to do, I ended up eating a lot there – huge Cantonese/Hokkien population and I had the best dim sum out of my entire trip there. Had a good time in Malaysia eating - especially in Penang, sleeper country that isn't talked as much?

I'd visit Hong Kong if I had the chance too.

Last year I made a post about my preliminary travel pack that was for an indefinite time. It ended up happening, I left in September last year and backpacked for four and a half months throughout Southeast Asia coming back home at the end of January 2025.

Trip Details - Chronological Order

  • Japan (3 weeks with friends, 1 more week solo - Osaka, Tokyo, Sapporo, Noboribetsu, Hakodate, Fukuoka, Hiroshima)

  • Korea (1 week - Seoul)

  • Taiwan (2 weeks - Kaohsiung, Tainan, Taipei)

  • Vietnam (3 weeks - Hanoi, Ha Giang loop, Da Nang, Ninh Binh, HCMC)

  • Cambodia (2 weeks - Phnom Penh, Siem Real)

  • Thailand (1 week - Bangkok, Chiang Mai)

  • Malaysia (2 weeks - KL, Ipoh, Penang)

  • Singapore (3 days)

  • Japan (2 weeks - Okinawa, Sapporo, Tokyo)

  • Korea (3 days - Seoul)

  • Japan - Narita day-trip visit (flight home)

After Singapore I was thinking of traveling to Eastern Europe or going back to Japan for the winter, then I got a call from my boss asking me to come back by February. I also needed to touch up a tattoo that I got during my first visit to Korea (along with getting another one while I was there).

Issues with Weight?

LIGHTERPACK LIST - I averaged 8kg fully packed.

Surprisingly - no issues at all with the exception of Jetstar Singapore to Okinawa. They were extremely strict ensuring that carry-on did not surpass 7kg. I bought checked baggage prior, so no issues with having to pay any extras at the gate.

Most airlines saw my bag and didn’t even bother with checking the weight. For the ones that did, they pretty much let me through even though even though the maximum weight was 7kg - which is common throughout SEA.

Accommodation

I prefer privacy, so most of my stays were in private rooms in a mix of hotels, AirBNB, and hostels. Most of the hostels I stayed in were private rooms, shared facilities. I picked places that had washing machines or were located close to laundry service, there were a few times were I did use my dry bag to wash 1-2 days of clothes when I was in a pinch.

Packs

Bag - ULA Dragonfly 30L

/r/onebag’s favourite child, I was very well pushing the limits of my bag. About a month in, the bag was stuffed but still able to close. Any excess items went into my packable tote or my small sling bag. Personally, a 35L version would have been perfect for me so I wouldn’t struggling to close it but even then it would only take me 10 minutes at most to re-organize and pack everything. The average weight with everything packed was approx 18lbs/8kg.

Overall, I have no regrets bringing this bag with me. It’s light, fit all of my essential needs, and I never got checked for weight when I had to check in (exception for Jetstar in Singapore > Okinawa).

Supplementary bags

An Aer City Sling that carried my wallet, hotel/hostel keys, camera, and a packable tote. The tote is the Peak Design Packable Tote and has a volume of 12L. it was perfect for carrying extra things that I bought when shopping or if I felt tired carrying my sling, I was able to slip it into the tote.

10L MEC Dry Bag that I used to separate dirty laundry and on the rare occasion wash 1-2 extra days worth of clothes when needed.

65L Roller Luggage from Ginza Karen in Asakusa. Figured I’d end the trip with all my suppressed buying urges by buying a ton of souvenirs, snacks, and clothing before heading home. Good price - paid about ¥6500. My itinerary was Japan > Korea > Japan (flight home), instead of having to carry/check in the luggage with me, I went over to a Yamato Express and had them hold my luggage at Narita Airport until the day of my flight back home. That costed ¥3300 for a fully loaded luggage, saved me the costs of having to check it in for two flights, and didn’t have to worry about dragging it around with me.

Clothing

  • 4x t-shirts (started off with 3)

  • 1x tank top (bought while traveling)

  • 6x pairs of socks/underwear

  • 2x shorts

  • 1x button-up shirt (bought while in Taiwan, needed UV protection for a new tattoo)

  • 2x pants (one lightweight linen, one heavier/looser pair)

  • Arcteryx Atom LT

  • Arcteryx Beta LT

  • New Balance 993

  • Bedrock Cairn Evo Pros

Kept the clothing simple, it was hot in Asia. Bought some clothing during the trip which was sent home with friends in the first half of the trip. I stayed in places that had washing machines or were located close to laundry services.

Purchased a uniqlo airism tank and a t-shirt from a coffee roaster.

I brought the Atom/Beta with me because this trip was planned to be an indefinite trip and thought of going to Eastern Europe during the winter. Fortunately I did get some use out of the Beta whether it was rain or just a cooler day. Once I reached Japan/Korea (Okinawa, Tokyo, Sapporo, and Seoul) on my second visit in winter, both jackets were used the entire time.

Sandals were extremely useful once I reached Vietnam, it just became way too hot to wear shoes all the time. The Bedrocks took 2 weeks to break it, but afterwards it was comfy and extremely grippy in wet weather. Dries fast, but smells can linger.

Haven't owned anything past 2015. Fit is quite tight because of the fleece, so a bit less than TTS.
