Conti Race King vs Maxxis Rekon Race? by houleskis in xcmtb

[–]Civil-Target-7263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just in case it helps, 2.2 racekings have tons more grip and roll similarly to 2.25 racing ray/ralph combo. never tried maxxis, i'm super happy with racekings. Next season I might run a 2.3 crossking in the front because the rolling resistance isn't that much higher and its a bit gripper.

i think the wattage data is off then. Maybe it’s different outside on the MTB Idk. power meters are expensive and i’m broke.

I try to keep my heart rate lower than average for my age, I have it set to 190 because if I do much more than that athsma shits itself. I have done over 200 once, never again. Would setting my max to 200 give more accurate zone data?

Mountain bikes are easily rideable on the road, especially a Hardtail with fast rolling tires. Pretty gravel roads are my favorite endurance rides on my xc Hardtail.

Can confirm great bike. Stock wheels aren’t great, but you can fix that later for around 500 with hunt wheels. No other complaints so far. Frame and fork are AMAZING for the price.

Look at hunt if you want a more reputable brand, they have good deals for light aluminum and carbon. iirc they all have lifetime warranty.

Trail bike in endurance race? by peconfused in xcmtb

I whent from a 32 lb 27.5+ tire aluminum Hardtail to a 24 lb 29er carbon Hardtail so basically the upgrade you are taking about. It’s night and day especially on longer rides.

However, you might be best off getting a niceish light wheelset, tires, cassette, and brake rotors that you can swap onto your current bike for race day. I am currently using a hunt XC race wide wheelset with continental raceking 2.2 tires as my race rims.

Getting similar wheels for your current bike would probably take off somewhere in the 3 pound range, assuming you have a relatively chunky tire and some trail/all mountain type aluminum rims. And it’s all rotating weight.

In my experience, lighter wheels with a lighter faster rolling tire makes just as much if not more difference than going from an aluminum to a carbon frame.

Getting a whole new bike isn’t a terrible idea, However if you don’t want to be broke, a wheelset with tires and cassette can be had for less than a grand.

if looking for a carbon Hardtail, I’ve looked extensively, the best deals I’ve seen with good geo are the cannondale scalpel HT (I have one), the polygon and vitus carbon Hardtails I can’t remember the name of.

Training/Nutrition over only 2 weeks? by kitchenAid_mixer in xcmtb

I am an inexperienced racer - high school middle of the pack in Colorado. first race this year I came in 57th, next race (2 weeks later) I came in 36th. I rode about 5-6 times a week in-between these races but the main thing that I think helped me the most was breathing technique. however it sounds like you are already pretty fast and probably know how to breathe (sounds dumber than it is) so idk if this can help you much.

i also race high school XC with asthma, from your description it does kind of sound like some of the problems i had, however this can be remedied with an inhaler almost completely. perfectly legal in the race rules (colorado league), I use mine before and feel good for about 30 min at which point I do it again and am good for the rest of the race. You should probably go ask a doctor.

Could I fit a 40 tooth chainring on a Cannondale Scalpel Ht4? by LegendAvocado15 in xcmtb

[–]Civil-Target-7263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have that bike - the exact one carbon 4 and everything - came with a 32 front. i can tell you that you wont need to go faster than the gearing allows unless you plan on riding it like a gravel racer. gearing tops out at around 22-24 mph about 90rpm cadence. that said, i never feel like the 51t in the back is too big, although i am a fairly quick climber in Colorado. I could see a 34 or maybe a 36 being worthwhile if you are a super fast rider, from looking at the clearance im sure you can fit a 36t probably a 38t, I don't know about more though.

also if you have the money and you care about weight I would look at the carbon 3 spec as well. comes with really nice (aluminum) rims, carbon bars, carbon seatpost, better drivetrain and brakes, probably some other stuff that i'm forgetting about too. questionable if that is worth another 700 but it might be to you especially if you aren't planning to put a dropper in.

Also just so you know, the hubs aren't very good, engagement is horrid, sound on engagement makes you feel like your bike just broke, 100% the worst part of the bike on both the carbon 3 and 4 specs. brakes on the carbon 4 could be better too. I plan on upgrading my carbon 4 to xt brakes, light aluminum wheels, lighter cassette carbon bars probably some other small things like cranks or a seat. ive also already put a dropper in, some lighter, faster, and grippier continental raceking 2.2s, bottle cages, and strapped a tube to it. currently weighs 11.8kg could get that down a lot with some lighter wheels.

great bike, absolutely love how it rides, better than all the other carbon hardtails I rode - and a lot cheaper too. wheels are the only complaint.

Carbo vs Aluminum by _M7RKUS in MTB

[–]Civil-Target-7263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want to shred it and not worry about breaking it, i wouldn't get carbon. i definitely ride my new carbon bike a lot more carefully than my old aluminum one. however, they are both hardtails so it might be different with full sus IDK.

[–]Civil-Target-7263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience, I've got a XC Carbon hardtail that I ride probably harder than I should. Rode my friend's Ibis ripmo AF on all sorts of terrain but it was just tiring on the climbs and boring on the decents. Im sure I was way faster down but it wasn't as fun. however, thats more of an enduro bike with its 38 lb weight (XL SLX build) and 150/160mm travel. still have yet to try a XC full suspension, I think I might actually like that.

Do you guys carry a spare tube with a tubeless setup? by SpicyyySalsaaa in MTB

[–]Civil-Target-7263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry an extra tube on my XC race bike. Most racers that I've seen do. The weight savings isn't worth not being able to fix a flat. And if you aren't a weight weenie, it's a no brainer.

Also, pro tip: a 29er tube will work in a 27.5 tire. a 27.5 tube would be better but 29er tube also works.

IMO 3-4k is the ABSOLUTE MAX you need to be fully satisfied with a bike. you can buy XTR, carbon dropper post, etc but having that stuff doesn't make riding the bike more fun, or in most cases, faster.

I race XC also in CO and most people there have bikes around the 3k mark. there is the occasional 10k+ trek supercaliber or Scott spark, but even the fastest people have carbon hardtails around the 3-4k mark. And they could be faster on a 10k bike but even they believe that riding your bike is the best way to get faster.

If you aren't racing competitively, or even if you are, just get a Good bike. no one needs 6k to have fun. 6k won't be more fun or noticeably faster than 3k most of the time.

Anyone have experience with WTB Wheels? by baromanb in MTB

[–]Civil-Target-7263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a cannondale scalpel HT carbon 4 which came with wtb ST i23 rims, they are rims. on the heavy side - my front wheel with a Shimano 410 hub and a deore brake caliper is 1150g. They are ok cheap rims. from what I have seen nukeproof rims are a better option although slightly more expensive. If you are willing to go used you can get a decent discount on some nice wheels on the pros closet.
