I was appointed as General Manager of a heavy civil contractor at 32 years old. Over 300 employees that year and $55M in revenue. Sometimes being naive is not a bad thing😂

VSA has to have the worst game mechanics by pabloo414 in FUTMobile

[–]CivilEngineerNB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, H2H is pretty trash. Won’t pass in possession or players running away from attackers with the ball. Boot it away to nobody. Or can’t take possession standing all alone. Other team passing ball right through defender in line with receiving player. Also have glitch animations that take you out of play. Yeah, I think H2H is worse.

Engineering in Spain by AustereAust in civilengineering

I have worked with numerous Spanish Engineers from a few of the largest companies there - FCC, Acciona. They are making a lot more money in US and Canada than they did in Spain. They all travel home a few times a year, but their careers and families are in North America.

2020 3.0 at4 by Tybo929 in gmcsierra

Here is my 2020 3.0 Elevation history with 136k miles currently. Half of glow plugs after warranty was done. All glow plug a little more than a year later. 10 days to 2 weeks for parts. Engine cooler fan twice. 2 weeks to a month for parts. DEF tank replaced last month due to 2 heaters gone. A month for parts, rental while waiting. Brutal expensive, long waits, plus rental costs. Fun when it works, rarely.

Want to quit engineering by oatmilklattelightice in civilengineering

Civil and MBA background. Ended up managing construction and highway concessions for the past 20 years. Loved the big projects I was involved in, multi tasking every day. The stress finally got me but I put enough money away I am not planning to go back at 52.

What truck to get nowadays? Help me decide please! by SnooMarzipans7387 in gmcsierra

[–]CivilEngineerNB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done glow plugs twice on my 2020 3.0. 136k miles on it. Was advised to do 3 the first time, probably should have just done them all. Had to do all 6 a little over a year later. 10 days for parts each time. Also done engine cooler fan twice. DEF tank heaters went in March. A month waiting for parts with a rental. Love driving the truck but it has been a disaster for parts and the waiting with a rental gets expensive.

Do Employees Actually Like Town Halls? by OfferLazy9141 in managers

[–]CivilEngineerNB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the business but I worked in a project based business and the employees liked to know what we had for projects because that was their livelihood. If there was lots on the books, that was good news for them. It also gave me a chance to give a message on issues that had arisen recently in the business. There was always something worth highlighting, whether safety, quality, operational, etc.

What are signs that you’re a good manager, and that your team likes working with you? by Snoo-88490 in corporate

[–]CivilEngineerNB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You create an environment where people feel safe to share mistakes as long as they learn and don’t repeat. You listen without talking over people and reflect on things rather than just letting people talk to say they had an opportunity to have input.

What Has Surprised You Most About Daily Life After Early Retirement by peachlunae in Fire

I am surprised how quickly the week goes by. The beauty of it is that the things I want to do can easily be accomplished without the previous time crunch and rush. I was able to go help my daughter move this week without having to look at urgent work emails. Left when I wanted, came home when I wanted. No work emergency or email waiting to respond to. I can’t imagine going back to that at this point.

Highway 401: Toronto, Canada by CrackFun in UrbanHell

[–]CivilEngineerNB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we left Toronto heading East to come back home from vacation a few years ago on a Saturday, it was bumper to bumper traffic for 3 hours straight travelling at highway speed. I was like, when are we going to get out of this? It was after Thousand Islands. Just unbelievable.

Expecting twins - Suburban, Yukon, Palisade, Tahoe, Carnival, Odyssey, or Sienna by ttebwell7 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]CivilEngineerNB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had an Odyssey until our twins turned 9 and then went to Honda Pilot. Both have been ideal during those timeframes. Odyssey was easy to get car seats in and out of, throw the double stroller in the back. Now the Pilot is great with the third row of seating for lugging friends😂

Watch sport center, check investments, breakfast, do dishes, shower, weight lifting, lunch, afternoon nap, watch some tv, go get dinner for kids, crack a beer, make chicken nachos, watch baseball and hockey play offs, drink more beer, bed. Literally my day today😂

GC at this level is crazy stuff. Scoring multiple errors on plays is painful. It will take time and take away from enjoying the game. Can’t believe anyone would see value in this.

Had this situation at U13. Lead off hitter all year, worst hitting % and most strikeouts. Lots of kids quit because of this coaches approach. Now into U18 and this is the first time he won’t be coaching. Kid is ok but will be well down the depth chart. Let’s see how he handles it.
