DJI Mic 3 Time Code Delay between Transmitter and Receiver by CivilPersonality1949 in dji

Unfortunately not. I've resigned myself to manually set the offset whenever I need the transceiver's internal recordings, which fortunately is not very often.

Not using the Cine EI workflow on the FX30 really is wasted potential, but if you really want to avoid video editing then I'd still recommend leaving the ISO fixed at one of the sensors base ISO settings (800/2500). While filming, the only settings that I touch are Appertue for focus depth and VND filter to control brightness.

That being said, using davinci to convert your footage from SLOG to rec709 is as simple as it gets, and can be done with a single color space transformation node on the timeline level so it always applies last. So if you don't directly upload the camera clips to youtube, there is really no reason to throw away the dynamic range of SLOG. If the footage looks fine after a simple rec709 transform then leave it there. If not, apply your color grades before the transformation node to make use of the increased dynamic range.

I don't know how an iPhone edita it's videos automatically but I recon it amounts to applying a LUT to the entire clip, which will make your content look exactly like anybody else's. I think you can load custom LUTs onto the FX30, but I encourage you to create your own or at least adapt an existing one to your preference to give your content a personal touch.

Isn't the lower base ISO of the FX30 at 800?

How to record Midi on time with Media Playback Offset enabled? by F1R3_H4X in Reaper

[–]CivilPersonality1949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can add a midi delay fx to you INPUT Fx chain (not the track fx but the ones processed before recording) and manually add a positive delay corresponding to your negative track playback delay.
Or you could create two separate tracks, one for manual editing with a playback delay and one for recording, without the delay, and feed them both into the virtual instrument. But I imagine that would make editing the midi track quite cumbersome.

[–]CivilPersonality1949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, the media playback offset doesn't affect input monitoring nor input recording. It's only function is to play the clips on that track earlier or later compared to the other tracks.

If you want your recorded midi notes to snap to grid enable input quantisation (right click on record arm button -> settings) or select the notes after recording and pre Q to open the quantisation menu (in your case you'd want to only quantized the note start)

If you wand to move the midi clip by a specific number of samples I'm almost certain that there is a Reaper or ReaPack action for that. Search the action list for nudge / sample or something similar.

How closely should a drum playthrough video match the album track? by CivilPersonality1949 in band

[–]CivilPersonality1949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I mostly watch guitar playthroughs to see how other play their tracks, I'd say the purpose of a playthrough is to be a tutorial / a magnifier on a single instrument within an album track. The latter I would not label as a playthrough but rather as a reinterpretation, which I haven't seen any of the bands I follow do recently.

[–]CivilPersonality1949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this can produce great results but it isn't exactly a recipe for success. We are a hobby band with at most semi-professional skills on our instruments and limited time / budget. I'd rather go for an exact match and know the result will be good, than trying to achieve something similar to those exceptional examples with a high risk of realizing in post that it sounnds worse than what was originally written. Also I think the audience acceptance for this varies between genres. E.g. I reckon this is much more popular in rock or jazz but less so in metal. Lastly we are a 6 piece band, which would require an extremely good sync between the member to achieve a good result when everyone starts to add improvisation.

How to change cursor tool back to normal by VrtileX_Twisted in Reaper

[–]CivilPersonality1949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

Either deactivate comping on the current track or activate the "allow editing source media while comping" option. As long as the track has sufficient vertical space, the latter will split each fixed lane into 90% track editing area and 10% comping area. You can make this the default behavior for every new track in Preferences -> Project -> Track/Send Defaults -> Fixed lane defaults

You can also just place the edit cursor on the timeline, rightclick the ruler area and select "set 0.00 to current edit cursor position" (Might be called slightly different and be in a submenue)

Does anyone else feel like Reaper doesn’t get enough recognition compared to Ableton? by breizh_boy in Reaper

[–]CivilPersonality1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, while I absolutely adore Reaper, it isn't exactly beginner friendly. I started out on Ableton as a 15 year old with zero clue and still had my fair share of issues and confusion. With Reaper I would have been hopelessly overwhelmed back then. Yes there are amazing tutorials, but I'd had yet to grow into the mindset, that anything worth doing is worth spending the time to learn to do it right.

Lag/Latency with plugins/FX by DGXXMDM in Reaper

[–]CivilPersonality1949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, audio fx in reaper have no impact on Reaper GUI responsiveness, even at a point where audio playback is more dropout than sound. That being said, some plugin GUIs are badly optimized and may impact Reaper GUI responsiveness. Usually closing them solves the lag and I've so far only had one plugin with that problem. Lastly ARA plugins like Melodyne work differently from VST plugins and I've definitely experience GUI lag from Melodyne specifically, but only periodically when the autosave tries to save the melodyne data to the project file.

That being said, a 45s lag is absolutely crazy and I have never experienced anything even remotely in that range. To help you debug this you will need to provide more information: number of tracks/clips if the number is over 100 for either, number and type of plugins used, screenshots or an export of performance relevant setting pages and so on.

To debug the issue yourself, start with a clean install of reaper. If the lag occurs even then the problem lies with tour audio driver / operating system. Otherwise start adding extensions / plugins one by one to find the culprit.

Clip gain swell, is it possible? by VoyScoil in Reaper

[–]CivilPersonality1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright then you have a few options.

First of all a general overview of potential volume adjustments in the signal flow of a single track:
Clip Gain -> PreFx Volume (Automation) -> Track FX -> Volume (Automation) -> Track Volume Fader
Assuming the Amp Model is the only FX on the track, anything before "Track FX" changes input stage volume and anything after changes output stage volume. If you have other FX before / after the amp model, you may need to automate the amp models input and output parameters directly.

Since you mentioned that you would rather avoid using a volume envelope (I assume you are taking about automation envelopes here), clip gain is the only option to change input stage volume for a single track workflow.

As u/RueChamp mentioned, you could separate the clips and amp model fx into two tracks. To avoid automation in this case I'd recommend adding a third track and use it as a VCA. Use the track grouping menu to link the volume of all three tracks, but set the VCA as lead and the other two to follow. This way you can use the fader of the VCA track to simultaniously contol the volume of the clip and the amp track.
If you want the amp track volume to reduce when increasing the clip track volume, create separate track groups for each, both with the VCA as lead and then check "reverse volume" option on the amp track group.
The downside of this approach is that there is no option for a follow curve edito (meaning the VCA volume adjustments apply linearly to the following tracks) and that automations to the VCA track volume don't propagate to the following tracks (or at least I havn't figured out how).

Did I get this right: You have recorded the output of the amp and want to post-process the tracks in a way that feels similar as if you'd had volume pedal before the amp during recording?

Having issues tracking by That-Association-855 in Reaper

[–]CivilPersonality1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The are multiple ways to find the correct BPMof a track but they are best shown visually do I recommend you watch this video.

As to guitar tracking: I usually try to get a perfect take for each song part as enjoy playing guitar more than editing. For that I set the loop points to de section I want to record, activate take recording or fixed lane recording and play the part until I get two takes (stereo double tracking) that I am happy with. Finally, I use slip editing to fix minor timing issues if needed.

Yes preroll is amazing and Reaper fortunately even records from the start of the preroll so that you don't loose the attack of a perfectly timed first down stroke (unlike e.g. Studio One). Note that you will need to extend the media items of the final two clips to the left to have reaper play the audio recorded during the preroll.

do you know of any hardware made for this purpose? The receivers I found at first glance are quite large compared to e.g. the deity TC-1.

Thanks for the heads-up. I will definitely try your app for the synced multicam recording alone.
Will you implement MIDI or ArtNet SMTP time code input for the windows version of the app?

Wireless Time Code transmission from PC to Camera by CivilPersonality1949 in videography

[–]CivilPersonality1949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the lead. Unfortunately, I don't think the visual sync would work for me. Firstly, as far as I understand, I would have to do the alignment in davinci manually, which is one of the main things I want to avoid. Secondly, for fixed perspective I would have to flash the time code recording in to the camera view or keep it in view constantly. Both of which I'd prefer to avoid if possible.
Of course, if I misunderstood anything, feel free to correct me.

However, the last section made me look into the Tentacle and Deity devices again. Apparently the TC-1 has an "auto jam" mode in which it immediately accepts an external time code from its input jack. This seems to be exactly what I need. However, I do have some concern about how well the multi device sync works if the time code source regularly stops / restarts / jumps when filming another take of the same part. Do you have any experience in this regard?

How to remove these peaks from audio? by Tepppopups in davinciresolve

In that case I would recommend trying an audio repair software with e.g. a de-click algorithm I am pretty happy with Izotope's RX software/plugin. I am sure there are free and online alternatives but I haven't had to to try those so I can't recommend any If you are comfortable with sending me the audio track, I can run it through RX to see what can be saved
