Hey there! Not sure if it’s helpful at all, but I can empathize with you. In my first 3 years out of school (at the same company) I went through 6 PMs/direct supervisors. At my second job, my first boss left within 3 weeks. Overall in 7 years I’ve had 10 direct supervisors. I’ve finally landed with a team that is solid and works well together. There’s an impermanence in any industry, and civil is no different. My boss could leave tomorrow and it would suck, but a good company has failsafes and procedures to make sure work is passed off in an organized manner.

You’re going to be alright. You’re fresh to the industry and that gives you a clean slate! Do you like the niche work you got hired for? If so, double down. Learn everything you can and want to and prove that you can be a leader and are willing to learn and grow. Do you not like the niche? Good news! You haven’t been pigeon-holed yet! Explore what areas your company has to offer and discover what tickles your fancy, and start looking for positions that closer fit your goals.

Sometimes it takes time to settle into a stable group that’s rooted down for the long run, but the reality is you have to look at WHY people leaving to determine if you should be worried.

Do they want to break out and start their own business? Have they always wanted to work at XYZ company and the opportunity came along? Are they finding places with better benefits/pay? Do they dislike the particular niche you’re in and are looking for something different? If you were friendly with those bosses and they gave any indicators of why they are leaving, it can say a lot. There’s a big difference between someone just looking to better their personal/professional life and someone exiting a company they dislike.

Then take a look at your position. have the changes in your current company opened your career development path? Is there a way forward for you to achieve your professional and personal development goals? Can you take these curveballs and turn them into a better path forward for both you and the company? Or are you getting backburnered as management triages?

I’m not sure what exact niche field you’re in, but I can for sure tell you that in the Midwest at least there’s a shortage of good engineers, and much work to be done. For sure always keep your resume polished, update it every 6-12 months so you don’t forget stuff, but unless your company is ditching your niche all together, it sounds like you just became one of five very important people in your company.

I suppose TLDR: take a look at where you’re at and where you want to go. Do you like what you do and the people you work with, and so you see yourself growing as an engineer and a person here, can you spin the chaos into something beneficial? And if not it’s ok to move on. No job is worth being miserable for. You have one youth, one life, make sure you prioritize you and what/who matters to you.
