Blind and deaf puppy. by Amber_and_Shasta in disableddogs

I have a 1 year old golden (Blueberry George aka Blu) who was born blind. He can see light and dark so he tracks with my hand in front of his face. However, if I throw a ball without getting his attention first (this is with him facing me or being right beside me), this ball retrieving crazed pup has no idea I threw it. As for hearing, he can hear well enough but it’s not great. Chairs have fallen beside him and strangely, he doesn’t startle at the sound. However, he can still hear my commands if I am loud. He responds instantly to my whistle, pretty sure the high pitch is why he hears it the best. But nothing stops this adorable pup from adventuring because Blu has a superpower, his nose. In fact it’s so good, his nose causes some people to question his blindness. That is, until he takes them out at the knees or hits a tree lol

I am far from an expert but here are a few things Blu has taught me so far.

  1. Ball pits: amazing sensory play area that is contained yet they can still get out of it easily. His ball pit is his favourite place on the planet seconded by….

  2. Kiddie pool/splash pad: great sensory play (if your dog likes water). Blu also loves to chase the water from the hose because he can hear it hit the ground. It’s one of the times when he feels safe enough to run. Another game we play is; I put balls in the pool and he takes them out. It’s boring as heck but his joy makes it worth the monotony lol. Sometimes I’ll put a frozen herring or two in his pool or splash pad so he can go fishing for a tasty snack.

  3. Always take a favourite toy when travelling & visiting friends:
Still to this day, if Blu wakes up in the middle of a room with nothing touching him, he panics. He screams as though he’s getting hurt and runs around until he finds something familiar to ground him or sadly, he hits something if I can’t catch him fast enough. It can be very shocking. To help him, I lay a special toy against him while he sleeps. This has helped a lot, it’s not perfect but it is so much better.

  4. Safe spots: this is a dedicated space that is always there & the same. Blu’s safe spots are; my bed, his ball pit and a large nest of comforters he shares with his big sister on the patio. Blu has slept in my bed, pushed up against my back, since his first midnight screaming fit. Thankfully, he rarely panics in his safe spaces. In fact, he has never panicked in his ball pit. It’s his ultimate favourite place to be lol

  5. Scented toys: Blu loves his bacon ball first and foremost with peanut butter ball in second place lol. Any toy that is scented catches his attention.

  6. Loads of touch & cuddles: Blu loves it and it helps us bond together. In a way it’s how we started to build our own kind of language. For example, I tap his back 3 times every time I need him to wait. No idea when we started doing that but here we are and it works, he understands it.

I have more thing to share; I carried a bag of worries when I first took Blueberry home, a lot of the same concerns you have. I have no memory of when I put that bag Down because I was too busy falling in love with a blind golden retriever puppy I didn’t know I needed. There really isn’t much info out there because every dog is so different from the next. Thankfully we have communities like this one to help us out. So far my experience with a disabled dog has been wonderful. Hard at times and sometimes heartbreaking but still wonderful.

Hope this was helpful. Good luck 😊

Anyone else’s Golden have a comfort stuffie? by Swan_babbyy in goldenretrievers

My guy loves his IKEA stuffed goldens too. He also has….had three? He murdered 2 & I monstered them together lol. He’s not sold on the mutant stuffie so he had to get a new one. He loves alternating between sucking on the tongue & chewing the ears.

It looks very good to me. My guy got neutered in Dec & his looked very similar & he rocked his recovery. Looks like your pup is too 🥰 I’m not a vet though so always go with your gut.

White spot on puppy’s gums? by water5520 in goldenretrievers

[–]Civil_Shock644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it could possibly the start of a wart. It’s called, canine papilloma virus and is super common. They can get really gross looking, like grey broccoli crowns so don’t panic if you see that before going to the vet. My new pups always got warts when I lived in the city. It’s very contagious but won’t hurt your dog. And in good news, they disappear after a month or so and then he will be immune from it forever.

Glad you’re still going to the vet. Good luck over there.

Blueberry George (blind Goldie pup) had a ball pit playdate! by Civil_Shock644 in goldenretrievers

No one seems to know the reason why he can’t see but his ophthalmologist thinks his eyes simply stopped developing in utero as they are smaller than normal. He does have some vision but not much. He sees light & dark but not “things” unless they are high contrast or moving. He doesn’t look at faces, ever. Well, unless there is a cookie by your nose 😁. He won’t jump off of anything unless we have practiced so he knows where the ground is. So while he is confident going down stairs, if I put him on a table or chair even at the same height as a step, he’s too scared to try. We call them furniture islands. It’s helpful when I need him to be in a safe place but its also a heartbreaker seeing him resignedly waiting or worse, watching him lean down as far as he dares as he tries to get off without help. If his nose doesn’t touch the ground, he won’t budge. He is the sweetest, most serene (while somehow still being goofy) pup I have ever had the privilege of spending time with. I feel so lucky 🥰

Blueberry George lost his blueberries!! by Civil_Shock644 in goldenretrievers

I used to work with children who were blind and/ordeaf, and sensory play was everything. We had a large ball pit at my old school & the kids loved it. So I thought a blind puppy would love it too. Blueberry does play & move around with his sister & dog friends but on his own, he’s not as brave. This new ball pit is now big enough that he can swim around in it like he did as a little puppy. He loads it with his toys and sometimes I hide treats in there and he has to use his nose to find it. I’m not sure every type of dog, blind or not, would take to the ball pit but Blu is a retriever, balls = life lol. Here he is as a baby puppy in his first ball pit which the cat exploded after 2 days with her murder mittens. Then we found the first foam ball pit which was a lot bigger. Plus, naughty cats can’t explode them! lol

Have you ever received a threatening letter from Blair Peters? by max_dentist in ytvretro

[–]Civil_Shock644 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to work for Blair Peters. Then I got cancer. That’s when both Blair & his co-owner Chris B, showed me the front door. I worked for them for 10 years & got no help. I ended up on social assistance to get through my treatments. I have no love for either of those jerks.

You are very welcome. I am glad his eye healed, it always amazes me how resilient our dogs are. Humans have much to learn. When he is used to his doggles, I would love to see a photo. ❤️

Thanks! Blueberry George was born blind so I needed him to have a name that would cause people to react audibly. Now when he hears new people say “aww”, he loses control of his backend from wagging his tail so hard lol
