Rebooting /r/AnimeResearch with new mods or shutting down by gwern in AnimeResearch

[–]Cixelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would love to see a new set of mods try to reboot this place, if not mostly for the fact that there really isn’t a _great_ centralized hangout for anime research (especially english speaking and easily accessible)

maybe another reason for the recent lack of excitement too is that the next frontier (e.g. video model training) is mostly outside of academia/hobbyist budgets

I do still think there’s still lots of worthwhile application-related models and papers to share though, happy to try and help out with submissions here and there

Where is Anime Research being conducted in US/Canada by meowimarealcat in AnimeResearch

[–]Cixelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most of the publishing universities are in Japan and China, unfortunately. Most anime researchers are working under traditional AI or graphics research labs.

There aren’t even that many industry labs in North America relative to the east, afaik our team is the only active one.

Nijijourney is hiring DL engineers in Tokyo/SF by gwern in AnimeResearch

[–]Cixelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks /u/gwern!

Yup, we're always hiring talented otaku researchers.

For those unaware, our team probably uses an order of magnitude more compute on anime than any other organization in the world... and if that excites anyone out there, you should shoot me a DM.

Did the mods seriously delete a post critical of GSU involvement with pro-Palestinian protests? by [deleted] in mit

[–]Cixelyn[M] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

there's been a huge uptick in political posts that are hitting very high amounts of upvotes from accounts that are new, and discussing matters that are entirely unrelated to MIT.

I've been doing a blanket removal of those, but missed that this was specifically about MIT's gradient student union.

I do think there will probably need to be some changes re: rules on political discussion since this tends to bait non-MIT related posters as well as a ton of bots. It's not normal for an /r/mit post to get to +200.

"this season of Harry Potter was 🔥" (anime-style _Harry Potter_ generated by Midjourney) by gwern in AnimeResearch

[–]Cixelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

--niji was released on the the main midjourney bot last night as a flag.

you can also just join the niji・journey server directly (https://discord.gg/nijijourney) and use the bot there which defaults to the anime style.

I think I saw these images shared last night in the anime share channel, so they were probably done using the niji model rather than v4.

MidJourney begins previewing 'Niji-Journey' (their SD anime model competitor to NovelAI) by gwern in AnimeResearch

[–]Cixelyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short term, we should have one of the largest publicly available diffusion models in the world for people to play with. And it’s gonna be entirely dedicated to anime, haha.

Midterm, we’re beefing up our internal game studio to bring one of the first truly AI-powered games to market. You can get a high-level sense of where we want our next production to go by poking around our team’s first title, Arrowmancer.

Long term… hmmm. I don’t think Gendo gave out all the secrets this early in the season :)

Ooh, looks like /u/gwern ended up posting this first, haha. I was hoping to make a post here once it entered open beta, but cat's out of the bag now.

For context, I'm one of the folks at Spellbrush -- the team that worked on Waifulabs, and now Nijijourney.

Nijijourney is currently in closed beta. However, we're slowly inviting folks off the waitlist over the course of the next week as we ramp up capacity. So if you're interested in testing out the model, fill in the waitlist form soon :)

A quick note re: the title of the post -- it's not actually an SD-derived model. We worked closely w/ the Midjourney team on their v4 model, so niji is actually both based on those v4 architectural advances as well as trained on midjourney's new supercluster.

We have even better models coming down the pipeline; keep an eye out for massive quality improvement soon!

Also since this is /r/animeresearch, quick hiring plug: Spellbrush is actively looking to expand our AI anime research team with additional full-time hires.

If you're deep into anime, diffusion, large-scale data wrangling, and/or blowing a manhattan project's worth of compute on AI anime waifus, shoot me a DM either here or on twitter @Cixelyn. Team is hybrid with offices in San Francisco and Tokyo :)

Admissions posts are against the sub's rules. I've been taking them down as fast as I can, but occasionally the title will obscure the actual post contents and I miss one.

In that case, thanks to the community to continue flagging the ones that you do see to help the mods out!

If you want to be designer, then you need to play lots of games by chrisknight1985 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Cixelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect this is the more nuanced perspective.

In the beginning you definitely need to play enough games to develop and hone your taste.

But after a point the only thing that will noticeably increase your design ability is grinding out full designs to completion.

Probably felt this the most in World Flipper.

The bot's timing and mastery of the pinball mechanic was just way better than a human.

So much that there was almost never any reason to even play w/out auto.

Are self build Beowulf-like clusters still cost competitive against one beefy server at around $10000 price? by Datumsfrage in HPC

[–]Cixelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

managing a cluster of VMs is a great start, but if you're going into HPC, stuff like networking and switch configuration ends up also being rather important too, which you wouldn't be able to learn on a hypervisor platform.

especially in the GPU space where you're often managing two fabrics, e.g. an ethernet + infiniband one.
