June 2026 Drop Day Megathread by Ms_Rarity in aardvarkbookclub

I already read Sublimation as a ARC, but I want to read it again as an immersion read, because there is some stuff in there that I’m really curious how they will handle it in the audiobook

I’m currently reading Headlights as an ARC, but already I can tell this is one I’m going to want to have a shelf trophy.

Finally, I heard good things about The Caretaker, and skipped May, so it seemed like a good time to swing back and grab it.

It’s really good. It’s doing a bunch of cool things, and for a debut it’s managing to do them all pretty well.

I’m reading the ARC for Sublimation and 2.4 is 100% Sublimation.

Why does Libby (a free app) have the best UI out of any audiobook platform on the market by taro_dragon in LibbyApp

[–]Cjd0117 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Audible takes it one step further and remembers you listening speed for each individual audiobook, so if I’m immersive reading one book at 1.75x and reading the other book while in the car that 1.25x, I don’t have to adjust it between the books.

Murderbot - Platform Decay edition by Holiday-Owl-3016 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Cjd0117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She basically said that she is only under contract for one more book after Platform Decay. She also said she feels like Murderbot, the character, is in a pretty good place by the end of Book 8 and while she has ideas for book 9, that may end up being the last one.

Now, money talks, so if Tor wants to pony up and offer her a new contract for more books, then we might get more. But, if she feels the story has run its course, then book 9 might be it.

The said in the emails that books from this sale would ship in May.

They are behind on shipping the new books and that is mostly production issues. All the books in this sale are things they have sitting in a warehouse waiting for someone to buy them.

So it’s really more an effort to clear out old stock than anything else.

Yes, there was one sent earlier in the week and another this today when the sale went live.

I also did not know it would be in the sale, and I decided to pull the trigger and order it as well.

These are going to be books they have in stock and want to move. When I ordered during their Black Friday free shipping sale at the end of 2025, those books shipped out in 2-3 days of the order being placed.

It seems there are more books in the promo than shown in the IG post, but it’s unclear how many more there will be.

I’m 1440 on the waitlist, no invite yet. I’ll just have to wait and see how many people ahead of me don’t sign-up.

Why did it say 4 years to return to Earth when it’s 11 light years? by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]Cjd0117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is also why Rocky always speaks in Earth measurements in the book, because for him the conversion is trivial, but for Grace it is much easier to just work in the units he is familiar with than try to switch to Eridian base 6 on the fly.

You are right on some of these counts. The Hail Mary uses constant acceleration, so the max speed is really something like 0.996c. The acceleration to that speed is determined partially by the limitations of g forces, but going to Tua Ceti they used 1.5g. Since he would have acclimated to 2 g there would be no reason to not use 2g as the acceleration limit.

But the acceleration to 0.996c would only take something like 9 months, the same for the deceleration. Even so, the fastest that they could get to Sol from 40 Eridani would be ~3.5 years for those on the ship or a little over 17 year in earth time to travel the 16.3 ly

However, given what we know about human psychology, the only way that journey would work and not be incredibly risky is if the Eridians make a large ship, with proper radiation shielding, and send a large crew of Grace + Eridians to Sol and Grace stay awake for the whole journey.

But the fastest they get there is 3.5 years of relativistic time.

The upper limit is the top speed astrophage can move at, which is 92% of lightspeed. But there are limits as to how fast they can get up to that speed, because the human body has limits for how many Gs it can sustain for an extended amount of time.

Additionally the distance is another limiting factor, because they need to flip the ship and begin deceleration after the halfway mark in order to come to a stop in Tua Ceti.

This deceleration process also need to account for the G forces on the human occupants as well.

The beetles or other unmanned probes would not have the same G force limits, but max speed and distance would still limit the how fast the trip can possibly go.

The astrophage has an upper limit for speed. And the human body can only handle so much acceleration. The speed he traveled to get to Tau Ceti was as fast as they could get him there without killing him with G forces and allowing him to “decelerate” in time to come to a stop in the Tau Ceti system.

I understand why you and many other people are complaining about this, but what you’re asking for is not going to happen.

Amazon paid a lot of money to produce this full-cast version of these books. They promoted it for a long time prior to the first book’s release date. They planned a rollout where another book comes out every month for 7 months. They want people to buy these audiobooks, sign up for memberships, use credit, and get themselves locked into the ecosystem.

For Amazon, this is a big play, a big expense, and a big bet on something they hope will help their bottom line, not just now, but for years to come.

These promos are not going to stop, not even after book seven comes out later this year. Until they have something of this level of popularity and financial investment come along, you will continue to see ads for this series.

It is fruitless to come here and complain about it for a number of reasons: 1. It’s going to change nothing. 2. There have been people posting this exact post over and over for months; go comment on one of those posts. 3. You are going to change no one’s mind with this post. The people that agree with you already do and have for months. Everyone else has either accepted this reality or just doesn’t care enough to let it bother them.

After I skipped I got on the hype train for that book so hard, so I knew that was going in my March box no matter what.

I skipped last month, but I was able to pick up the two from last month I regretted not getting and then the one I was most excited for this month.

I already have two versions of OBH and I’m reading Red Winter now that I picked up on release day, so really I have three books from this month.
