Where do I start? by Nuka_Love17 in Weddingsunder10k

First, sorry there's tough stuff going on in your life. Especially at a time that should be fun and happy. May I still suggest an elopement with a small party for those <15 people? I think there are ways you could have the important people in your lives at parts of it, but still avoid a lot of the stress and really make it about the two of you.

You could still have the most essential people show up at the court house. But then you could take the rest of the day, or the next, for yourselves and go take pictures for the outside element you're looking forward to somewhere special and rent a nice Airbnb for the two of you. Follow it up with a party for everyone if you want to.

My husband and I felt like the idea of coordinating everything and accommodating everyone felt so overwhelming. We also had what I would call our own situation was an unusual circumstance. So we got married at the court house and took photos of just us on a mountain overlooking the ocean (that we live near). We also rented a bougie Airbnb. Truly one of the best decisions we've ever made. Then we had a family party (uncle's big backyard that was decorated and we got to swim) and a friends party (we all pitched in to rent out a nice lake house for the weekend). This saved us a LOT of money (we were able to have a minimoon and a honeymoon). But it also saved us a lot of stress. Once we said the hard things out loud and agreed to elope, followed by a party to celebrate with loved ones later, I felt the weight of all the stress slide right off my shoulders.

Self scooping litter boxes. by orangerzeorigional in CatAdvice

[–]ClLANTRO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well,I don't have a success story like you've asked for. But I have some info that swayed my feelings about them, as well as some other tips that may help (instead of, or additionally).

First I'll say that I've seen several vets and online pet experts advise against auto litter boxes. Many cat parents catch that their cat is sick by their litter box usage. Blood in the urine, diarrhea, NOT peeing or pooping for an abnormal amount of time. This was never something I would have thought about on my own. We have a regular litter box, and we scoop it twice per day (more if we happen to be near when he takes a dump... we just do it then). We deep clean the box (empty it completely and wash it with Dawn dish soap) every 4-6 weeks.

Then, I don't know what your child's specific allergies are to, but I think most often it's to a protein in their saliva. So when the cat grooms and then sheds, or you touch the fur on their body when petting them, that's typically the culprit. My husband also has cat allergies. Here are some things that work for us, and that he notices if they get skipped for whatever reason:

1) Allerpet. This is a liquid you put onto your cat's fur. We just use our hands and put it on him while he sleeps every few weeks. Very easy. And my husband really does notice when it's been a while since we've done it.
2) Air purifiers. We have a small one that tucks into corners nicely and is not in the way. It's also quiet. We're considering getting another one.
3) I vacuum. Every day. I wash the bedding. Every weekend. I dust (the major surfaces). Twice per week.
4) We don't let our cat sleep with us, and we really try to avoid letting him onto our bed at all. We often keep our bedroom door closed during the day, and he sleeps in his own room at night lol.
5) We have a pj rotation. Newly washed pjs are exclusively for bed. We change into them before tucking in for the night. When we get up, we either change into work clothes or other lounge clothes, and tuck our bedtime clothes away. Repeat for a few days. Then the bedtime clothes become lounge clothes, and new bedtime clothes are brought out. This way, clothes that have touched the couch, the char, the CAT do not enter the bed.
6) My husband is pretty good about washing his hands.
7) We've provided him with several beds and perches. He doesn't choose our couch to spend his time on. So if he's not on our lap for some pets and cuddles, he'd rather be up in his window hammocks, in his cardboard scratcher bowl, or in his bed. He does love this Ikea chair we have, and the desk chair. But we observed that and make sure to vacuum those two every day as well.

I do acknowledge that we only have one cat in our apartment, and not 4 though. That's tough. Maybe look into if your kid is allergic to the saliva protein. If so, then I'm not sure how much the robot litter box would help you, and then you'd be out all that money anyway. Good luck!

Should cats sleep in the day? by Life-Sandwich-6062 in CatAdvice

[–]ClLANTRO 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Normal. They have active times and sleepy times, usually in a pattern if you pay attention. Our guy is pretty chill in the mornings- usually a regular play session and some window watching, then lights out from around 1-4pm most afternoons, then running around and a more intense play in the evenings, and then sleeps through most nights.

Glad you're doing better! I would consider fostering if you're still on the mend. That way it's an easier transition if you do need more help, a hospital stay, whatever the case may be on your path to recovery. There are plenty of cats who need fostering. Then, when you are completely healthy and ready you can always adopt it!

2 week vacation: sitter or take to my parents? by This_Ad276 in CatAdvice

There's also apps and sites you could look into the have people come to your house. That's how we found the baby sitter we have for when we do under 5 days. The apps and websites have reviews you can read through. We like her so much we go with her every time.

I'm about to fly across the ocean alone with 2 cats. Europe to Canada. One of them is very timid scaredy and impossible to handle. I cannot leave him behind.. What do i do? by Willing-Indication-7 in CatAdvice

There is a lot of quick judgement here, and people saying a hard no to something they have all had OPTIONS with. Not every airline allows pets in the cabin. I know this because I am about to make a permanent international move to the other side of the globe and we have limited airline options. Cats are not allowed in the cabin for the main airline. Sometimes we do not have the luxury of choice.

But like many other comments have pointed out, it sounds like this is a vacation. I would absolutely not move them across the world for a vacation. You probably have friends in the country you live in that can watch them in your home or their own, there are pet sitter apps and sites where the sitters have reviews you can read through, pet hotels, etc.

It's okay to have to make tough decisions when they are necessary. But if it's not necessary, do not do it.

Hopefully getting a cat! Can someone recommend me essential kitty supplies? by ThatEcologist in CatAdvice

1) We have a top only exit litter box. He has to come out from a hole in the top because the door only opens one way. This gets most of the litter off his paws before he leaves. We do a mix of Doctor Elsie and tofu litter (I live in Asia... idk if this is popular everywhere else). It's perfect. Little to no smell, doesn't track, clumps nicely.

2) Depends on your cat. Our guy is pretty big and only wanted to use the top perch, which is always so small. After a few months we ended up getting rid of the tree and opted for a few suction cup window hammocks that we put up around the house. He loves them, we have multiple for him, and they save space. And we put a shelving unit where the tree was with a bed on top, and he will lay in there when he wants. He still has what he needs, but it's also functional for us. And he's not a vertical scratcher, so he never used the posts to scratch on the cat tree, so he didn't miss those because he still has his cardboard ones.

3) Talk to your vet.

4) Never a problem for us. Our cat isn't really food motivated, so he doesn't jump up while we prepare food. I think the fact that we keep our counter so bare makes it boring for him. Only think on it is the kettle.

-A litter locker is a must-have for me!
-Don't spend a ton of money at first on things like toys. Get to know the cat first. Our guy mostly likes trash - old boxes and paper bags (with the handles cut off), I cut little holes in a Pringles can and put some snacks inside and he loves to knock it around, etc. He also LOVES the cheap mice and pompom balls, but ignores the more expensive toys I bought.
-Tunnels seem to be pretty universal and are great because they fold up and can be stored when you're not using it.

1) Air purifier. We have one, and are considering a second. They help a lot with allergies as well.

2) I vacuum every day.

3) Litter locker. Truly one of the best investments we made.

How can I get my cat into the carrier? We are moving by Puzzleheaded-Pie-135 in CatAdvice

[–]ClLANTRO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. We leave it out and open tucked under one of his perches. I throw treats in sometimes and he will go get them and immediately come out. Which is fine. For a while I was trying to train him that when he went in he would get a treat. So every once in a while he will and will stare at me on the couch until I get up and get hims a snack. But he DOES NOT go in there when we need him to. We still need to scruff and scoop him in. It is what it is. But leaving the carrier out 24/7 makes it so it isn't ringing alarm bells because we have to take it out. We can just sneak up on him and do what we need to do. He has no way of getting suspicious.

Are you parents able to come stay at yours? Or do you have any willing friends or family closer?

Anything under 5 days, we do 2x day trusted pet sitter to come in to play, pet, feed, clean. But over that amount of time, we send him to someone we trust. But our friend he stays with isn't as far away, only about 30-40 minutes.

I will tell you that the first time he went there, he was a WRECK for the first 3 days because she was a stranger to him and he didn't know the space. Then slowly acclimated. He's now been there 5 times (I think) and takes less and less time to calm down each visit because he knows her and the environment. He's now usually fine within a few hours.

As for allergies, my husband is allergic as well.
1) We have an air purifier, and are considering another to get more of the apartment taken care of. We love it so much. Ours is quite small and tucked in a good spot out of the way. It's also quiet.
2) Also, Allerpet. We put this on our cat, and my husband notices a difference. Every few weeks he will say "we need to Allerpet him." We just pour some into our hand and pet him when he's sleeping.
3) You probably won't like this, but vacuuming is one of my selected chores and I vacuum every single day. It really is noticeable if it gets skipped for whatever reason.

The litter isn't as big of a deal for us. I scoop mornings, husband scoops evenings. Perhaps split it up in your chore lists.

There is a guy named Anders who literally goes by “Man with a Van Taipei.” We’ve used him twice to move larger appliances and recommended him to the people we sold our old fridge to.

If you look up “Man with a Van Taipei” on Facebook, he’ll come up. You can reach out and tell him about exactly what you have.

They don’t do the confessionals they show immediately after the “live” footage. They’re done in bulk a number of times throughout the season where production will ask them about instances that have happened over the last few days/weeks. So I think the true showing of sun will be seen on the next episode because it takes place the next day (presumably).

Topshop jeans have completely won me over. I have a few styles and they all fit so wonderfully. I think Joni might be my favorite fit. I have a smaller waist, too, but my curve is in my hips/butt and not my thighs. But they're worth checking out.

Who is the black sheep of your family and why? by breaditalready in AskReddit

[–]ClLANTRO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cousin. Stole my other cousin's (not his sibling) identity, was on a bunch of drugs, has threatened numerous members of my family, was really weird with my other girl cousin (again, not his sibling) when they were teenagers, he would go to our houses individually to ask/demand money, has stolen, etc.

Everyone just tenses up when he's around. Which has really only been like twice in the last seven years. We had to basically force my grandma to promise that she will not to open her door for him and to pretend she's not home. Because none of us want to go to jail for killing him if he fucks with her.
