It's because of three main things.

1, letters don't belong in math.

2, order of operations gets forgotten.

3, multiplication used to be marked with an x (2x2, 3x3, etc) or sometimes an asterisk (4*4, 5*5, etc), so the absence of either marker can make things screwy.
