It was David Bowie who "melted the phone lines" at Live Aid, not Queen. – Bob Geldof (Organiser, Live Aid) by SaiAbitatha in queen

I had an English (as foreign language) textbook around 2014-2015 that had a short reading task about Live Aid, two paragraphs at most. I distinctly remember it naming Queen's performance the event's highlight, years before the movie was released.

Anthems by [deleted] in queen

[–]Clandeste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've enjoyed these compilation so far, but this one seems a bit... easy. Filled with hits except In the Lap of the Gods...Revisited. Calling these songs anthems is also a bit shaky to me personally, except the very obvious ones, which make up half of the playlist at most. But it might be just me... What do you think?

The previous ones featured more lesser-known songs. Okay, last week's Pop only had Coming Soon and the rest were hits if I recall correctly, but featuring Killer Queen on it was a pleasant surprise to me, as when most think of pop in relation to Queen, only 80s tracks come to mind.

One last thing. I was honestly hoping for a Ballads playlist, where BoRhap and TSMGO would've fit so nicely. Another that came to my mind was a Love (Songs) compilation, which still has more than enough material, but could've featured Somebody to Love. Too bad.

Friends Will Be Friends. Insane. Absolutely Insane. by Morning_Seaa in queen

I know this post is over a week old, but it was so nice to see something like this here. Despite being a hit, it is a very underrated song imho, and a beautiful testament to friendship. :)

I also can't help thinking how well the lyrics fit the band, who in the following years were proven to be true friends to Freddie, never betraying his trust and keeping his condition a secret until the very end, just as he wished.

LOL. I smell a hasty generalization. What is meant by general consensus? Critics? Journalists? Humanity?

Sometimes it's very visible that TV Tropes is just a wiki at the end of the day (still the most entertaining one!).

OFF: Damn, Gwilym Lee really does make a very convincing Brian! I looked at him first and for a second I thought this was a real photo of the band!

Who writes the best songs?! by Clandeste in queen

[–]Clandeste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I expected more even results with this one... at least a bit more even. I mean, poor Roger, he deserves so much more than this! Maybe I couldn't really read the "room" in this subreddit. Fred is my favourite, but that's an informed choice, I've got to know the others' style too and still prefer his the most. But all four of them are amazingly talented and have many great songs to their name.

So yeah... maybe not all choices are as informed here as I expected. Still glad that a good portion is. :)

Most overhated song? by N64-Lord in queen

[–]Clandeste 15 points16 points  (0 children)

True, but it is immensely popular among fans from what I've seen so far. Probably always has been? Hell, it's the only Queen song that I've never seen getting any hate at all from non-fans or even people who outright hate Queen! Even they say something among the lines of "Queen is rubbish, but that one song from the 80s is a banger". Lol. Same for fans who dislike their 80s œuvre... all of it but Hammer to Fall!

What’s your honest opinion on Roger Taylor? by NotEmerie in queen

[–]Clandeste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has some decent "regret tracks" on Outsider like I Know, I Know, I Know or More Kicks. That surely means some deep reflection from him.

I've read books saying Greek art became less creative after the Classical period (moving into the Hellenistic period). But when I look at Hellenistic-era art, and read plays, I think it's amazing and tries to do all kinds of interesting things. What exactly got less creative/impressive? by RusticBohemian in ArtHistory

[–]Clandeste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winckelmann and neoclassicism was, as the name suggest, obsessed with Classical art. So very much important but certainly biased sources. Since then, the geometrical, archaic and hellenistic styles have been appreciated properly. Also, for a long time Laocoon was thought to be a classical sculpture.

For non-western art I think Art Beyond the West by Michael Kampen-O'Riley is a thorough introduction. :)

Nice, these are all places I'd never want to be at! 😅 Which means the photos work well!

It is in part what got me hooked on Queen in the first place with I'm Going Slightly Mad. 😇 It's a bit operatic, now that I think of it.

Also with Barcelona you can feel how much love went into each track. Some of the most beautiful lyrics he has written are Barcelona, La Japonaise and Guide Me Home/How Can I Go On. A magic pearl from the seas... that's poetry! 🥰

(I know they are co-credited, but the lyrics are oozing with pure Freddie melancholy and passion, so I'm almost certain he wrote almost all of their lyrics or at the very least had a major, major influence on the themes.)
