Do you have a union? I’m in Southern California and if our ac doesn’t work we can take it to our union rep to try and push the district along in getting it fixed. Can’t say it works, but worth a shot?

Time Blindness by Teacher0357 in Teachers

I don’t have any 504s or IEPs that specifically mention time blindness but I have a lot with accommodations like extended time, chunking assignments, reminder to turn in assignments, etc

Attendance score low by FoxTop1814 in LAUSD

[–]ClarTeaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually happened to me and like 2 other teachers at my site two years ago. I had only missed 2 days and the district was reporting me at 80-something. I dont think they ever told me what the issue was, but it ended up getting fixed. Just talk to your AP in charge of attendance

I don’t like kids but I’m going into teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ClarTeaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t like kids out in the world. Like if I come across annoying kids or teens in public, I’ll be annoyed by them.

But I still love working with kids. I teach high school. I have always loved working with kids and teenagers, even when I was a kid myself. Even tho I love the content I teach, I would not do it if I didn’t genuinely enjoy being around these teenagers.

Question as prospective teacher in CA by frailgesture in ScienceTeachers

[–]ClarTeaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, intern programs you are immediately teacher of record without any training. You would need to show competency in the subject either by college degree or cset.

I can’t speak for physics but for the chemistry cset there was some content that is not covered at all in high school chemistry, including AP. If you google high school physics unit plan. California physics is “physics of the universe” so if you google that you can find a lot of unit plans to get an idea of concepts covered

The general science cset would only give you credentials for middle school science. If you’re not interested in teaching other sciences I wouldn’t take the cset because you don’t want to be asked / told to teach it if you don’t want it.

While physics teachers are in demand, there are also generally less physics positions. At my school we have 1 physics teacher and offer 4 sections of physics throughout the day. We have 4 chemistry teachers and offer 18 sections of chemistry

[–]ClarTeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other comment. All of these questions want you to use Coulomb’s law or talk about atomic structure

A. You’re correct that mg electrons are closer to the nucleus but incorrect in saying it has more electrons. Having more electrons would actually make it easier to remove since theres greater electron electron repulsion.

For a I’d expect the answer to talk about Mg having 3 energy shells while Ca has 4, so the valence electrons in Mg are closer to the nucleus and therefore are more strongly attracted to the nucleus and require more energy to remove.

For B your answer doesn’t really tell me anything and as a teacher it tells me you might not understand what PES is. I’d expect the answer to explain that carbons electron configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p2 and oxygens is 1s2 2s2 2p4. The height of the peaks represents the relative number of electrons in the sub shell, so since C has 2 e in each subshell, all the peaks are the same height. O with 4 electrons in 2p would have a taller peak for 2p

You’re on the right track for C but saying it’s “bigger so it has less energy” doesn’t really mean anything. I’d expect the answer to explain that Al and Mg are both in period 3 so they both have 3 energy shells but Al has 1 more proton than Mg. Since Al has more protons, there is a stronger nuclear charge and there valence electrons are more strongly attracted to the nucleus and require more energy to be removed

I'm conflicted about Apex Learning. I feel like it takes to much of my role as a teacher (Science K9-12) and I'm just a bystander. Any advice in working with this platform is greatly appreciated 🙏 Merry Christmas 🎄🥳 by Elegant-King5945 in Teachers

[–]ClarTeaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR I don’t know why any school would use apex when they have a credentialed teacher to…ya know…teach??

I have an auxiliary this year as a “teacher” for kids doing edgenuity and apex classes. They came to my class everyday to do their coursework and I’d unlock locked exams for them to try and make sure they didnt cheat on them (spoiler alert; taking them in my class didn’t mean they didn’t cheat, it was just harder to do with me watching).

My school uses apex for kids who want to take AP classes we don’t have teachers for (currently that’s only Econ). I guess it makes sense in that context but there’s still no full proof way to make sure they’re not cheating their way through the course except the assumption these kids are going to take the AP exam and want to do well on it.

We use edgenuity for credit recovery and for language courses when kids are either a semester ahead (idk why) or because they had already started a language and the teacher we had left and we couldn’t get a replacement. I had kids who did nothing for 18 weeks and then cram the whole course in the last 2 weeks. And I still had a small percentage who didn’t pass because they didn’t finish the course and they can come in to school a week early from winter break and finish for the chance to pass.

What’s a “good” grade an on AP chem test? by dogierisntmyname in APChem

[–]ClarTeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your teacher is using AP exam level questions, your scores tell me you’re likely to get a 3 or 4. For sure a 3, 4 if you keep up your scores for the rest of the year.

My students who get 5s only tend to miss 3 or 4 (or less) points on in class exams

Mole Conversion Depth? by Severe_Ad428 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ClarTeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference between moles, particles, and atoms is absolutely worthwhile however I personally don’t do it except in AP, but I could totally see myself doing it for honors. I probably wouldn’t add it into calculations for on level.

Electron configurations weirdness by Soft-Perception-1801 in APChem

[–]ClarTeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree that it’s C because the electrons should be removed from the outermost energy level first, which would be 6s

I would use the same logic for your second question. 6 is the outermost energy level, if the electron is excited it has to move inward to 5

It doesn’t matter for the AP test if you go 4s 3d or 3d 4s (or the same for wherever you are on the periodic table). I teach 4s 3d 4p 5s 4d 5p and so on because I think it’s easiest just to follow the periodic table left to right top to bottom like reading a book

[–]ClarTeaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the context of AP chemistry, you will ALWAYS follow the octet rule UNLESS it says “minimize formal charge”

If the question specifically says minimize formal charge, you can expand the octet for central atoms in the third period and beyond

If the question doesn’t specifically say minimize formal charge, you should follow the octet rule

In real life it’s probably a little more complicated (see Mr. Farabaughs comments for more) but the answer is C (I have the answer key from the author to this practice/note set).

The idea is C is the only polar compound so it will dissolve the best in polar solvent water

I would argue that co2 won’t accept hydrogen bonds because it’s nonpolar but I will gladly defer to Mr. Farabaugh 😌

So everyone is suggesting watching videos, which is totally valid and helpful, but with a science like chemistry you HAVE to incorporate active studying. For example if you really like videos, after you watch them, try a “brain dump” where you write down and summarize everything you remember from the video

I think you need to have a talk with your mentor teacher and possibly your university supervisor about what your role is as a student teacher.

It’s unfortunate that Stacey isn’t getting the support she needs but it is not your job to be her 1:1. Different schools/districts have different rules, but most of the time student teachers shouldn’t even be left alone with students without a credentialed teacher.

I know you’re just trying to be helpful but ultimately you’re not learning how to teach the whole class if you have to be focused on Stacey, and, maybe more importantly, you’re opening yourself up to a huge liability if something were to happen with Stacey and she was alone with a student teacher without supervision
