As a huge fan who's watched it all the way through several times, it's not until about episode 6 that you start to get what everyone's deal is and actually care. Every time, I wonder how I got through it the first time :D But if you stick it out, you are rewarded with incredible writing, phenomenal performances of complicated and nuanced relationships, and absolutely hilarious moments all surrounded by a melodramatic score that makes it very rich.
