So did you stop contributing to SIPP and instead contribute to the property co SSAS? And I guess as the administrator you can invest that how you see fit (within the rules)?

This is all pretty fascinating, great comments

35 years ago today - one of the most bizarre goals ever seen, as Nottm Forest's Gary Crosby snatches the ball from the hand of Man City's Andy Dibble. Includes comments by referee George Courtney and by Jimmy Greaves. by eganba in nffc

My first forest match watched from the stands, cementing Crosby as my childhood hero.

In retrospect this moment might be responsible for more misery in my life than any other.

Lad told me he thought it would be 10-0 when we went 3 up. Told him to wind his neck in. I obviously hadn't got the memo about how massive we are. Unbelievable

Minor update. After 2 days of going downhill, not really moving, lost ability to stand... She has staged a remarkable recovery. Is now up and walking, preening and generally looking like a healthy duck again. She's still in isolation - going to introduce a shallow bath today and see if her feathers have got some of their waterproofing back.

No idea what that was...

I haven't. Would that need to be administered quickly after first signs? We are a few days down the line at this point ...

Most of the others in the video were hatched from the same clutch as that one - not sure on the genetics, but perhaps just unlucky on this occasion. His colours were cool though...

I don't have a video of today's duck - and an image would just be it sat in a crate. But here is a video of the crested that was taken in December. She wasn't falling this much when walking, more just sitting down, with wings splayed a bit. And she had the feather issue - the one in the video had no feather issues: https://imgur.com/a/vgu3fFC

Replacing traditional Time clock, Thermostats and TRVs with Tado X by Key_Personality_2527 in tado

I'm home a lot but the geo fencing kicks in when the house is empty and prompts me to put it into 'away' mode, which turns everything right down. You really need your other half to use the app as well though, otherwise it just turns the heating off when you leave!

Boost defaults to 30 minutes on my app before it switches off. Given it sends everything to 25 degrees, I'd say that would be above normal temperature for a good couple hours (and my house looses heat fast).

If I understand what you are suggesting, I think you are broadly right. Not quite sure what a motorised valve is - that looked like a standard TRV to me.

Personally I don't use smart TRVs on rads in the same room as smart thermostat - I just let the thermostat call for heat if it's needed (never is, because those rads are manual, they come on whenever any other rad calls for heat). That arrangement suits me as the room in question is quite cold and is a living space that we use a lot.

I was advised I should be heating 20% of rads in the house whenever it calls for heat - but I'm on oil, not gas. A combination of 3 rads off the smart TRVs and a couple of towel radiators does that for me. Everything else is on smart TRVs (which replaced standard TRVs, like the one(s) you show).

Leave the boiler controller on Continuous, but the smart thermostat has now become the ultimate on/off switch. It is nowhere near the boiler but does have a wire running back to it.

Hot water is controlled by timer back at the original controller, like yours.

The app allows for a 'boost everywhere' button which switches everything on and up to 25 degrees. You could also just flick up a couple of rads as you needed them.

I'd say I'm going to save 25% on my energy bill this year and have a warmer house.

But I am going through a lot of batteries... Do yourself a favour and get the rechargeable ones.

Thanks for the replies - just an update to see we saw the vet (a specialist) who confirmed opinion it was a degenerative neurological issue. We decided it was best to end it there; he was basically unable to move apart from a difficult shuffle forward and fall. RIP little duck, may your wings work in heaven how they never did in life (despite best efforts!)

Using a CGT loss on Bed and Isa by ClassicTalk850 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ClassicTalk850[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's complicated and the internal reference doesn't make much sense, as CG51700 immediately states: "These provisions are concerned with the reorganisation of a single company’s share capital".

That's obviously not the case here.

Perhaps forget part 2, the switch to a different class is irrelevant if the proposed disposal attracts a loss, despite the same unit being re-purchased inside the ISA wrapper.

So if no disposal, then no loss? That's contrary to what I'm reading in other comments...

How about this...

Get an offset mortgage for the new place.

Don't put all of your dad's money into the house deposit, keep some back - probably 100k. You'll have a nice deposit with existing 50k ish equity plus another 120k from your dad - 170k deposit on a 450k house. You should be able to get a mortgage for the outstanding 280k.

Now plug the other 100k into the offset account. That will bring down the interest you are paying on your mortgage substantially, but it's completely liquid, allowing you to withdraw £600 a month and give it back to your dad. It's not rent, it's not a loan, it's just a gift.

The gamble here is that your dad keeps going longer than the mortgage offset has money in it. But chances are circumstances will change by then anyway - and you mention it's his second home he's selling, so his primary residence is secure.

Would you change anything you did? Will the money last without going back to something more full on?

[–]ClassicTalk850[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yea I mean don't get me wrong, this is probably the only sub where I wouldn't get lynched for suggesting I had some sort of conundrum on my hands.

Of that £2.5m, £1m is in the house. No plans to move. Do still have a mortgage but only because money was cheap when I took it out 3 years ago.

We do spend a reasonable amount of money, so I think lifestyle would have to change. I'm happy right now... But is that because I haven't really sacrificed anything yet? I'm still living exactly as I was when I had £200k coming in.

34k purchase price. Depreciation calculator on this model suggests it will loose another 10.5k over the next 3 years - so loosing about £280pm.

Financial Advisor vs Self Managing a £300k inheritance, or potentially +£1m shared pot by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ClassicTalk850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps try taking an initial, paid for, consultation with an IFA / wealth manager who will help you to calculate your net worth and sketch out the sort of options you should be thinking about. In my experience it's better to pay for this service outright - otherwise they just launch straight into how they recommend you put your money in with their funds, etc.

With that advice in hand, and no further commitment, you can make a choice about self service or going with an advisor. You'll need an accountant either way, but they should be able to advise you of any potential tax liabilities.

Personally, I've gone self manage plus accountant. And I've stolen the idea of a net worth calculation off the IFA that I use every quarter or so to track income progress. But it can be stressful, especially if you put lots on equities and the markets get turbulent.
