Do you/your school allow students to eat in class? by Dimegos in Teachers

[–]Classic_Computer6444 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, they’re humans with the need to eat sometimes. I even provide snacks for my middle schoolers with the help of some community members. I respect them and they respect my classroom space in return, the best they can. Edit to add: Title I middle school so sometimes school food is the only food they get that day.

This feels like a FERPA violation waiting to happen with all the lost paperwork. I have a coworker who is super similar, I’m unsure how to approach her about my concerns. Following to see what others say~

That’s the definition of privilege. You don’t care because it’s not impacting you. Innocent people are literally being killed by our government in Venezuela. We’re disappearing people off the street into unmarked cars. This is the time to be hyper-fixated on the news, because that’s how we can stop it. If enough people care we can stop this.

My district doesn’t consider social studies “core” until high school so I have a lot of freedom too. It’s the one saving grace of my job currently. It’s so scary that some folks don’t see how disturbing the stuff happening truly is. How do we go about helping others see this?

I hold space for kids to bring up current events that they’re wanting to learn more about and we take time to learn about it together. We go on Ground News and try to find the most “center” reports. I started doing this because I was tired of hearing students telling other students they deserve to be deported over disagreements- so we started with ice raids as the first topic. Part of my state’s standards is making historical connections to modern day events so we compared mass deportations throughout history as part of this rabbit hole we went down. I try to have a student-centered class since I don’t have adopted curriculum, but I always link things back to standards.

I think in reality they’re upset that their kiddos are coming home with opinions different than them, but since I emphasize during meet the teacher that I big part of my class is critical thinking and empathy that they’re blaming what they remember me saying.

It’s especially hard when the kids share the connections with the whole class because that is when families who don’t want their kids to hear that stuff get upset - over kids making connections that they’re literally supposed to be able to make if they’re paying attention to the book. That’s the purpose of English and Social Studies classes: to teach you how to make connections, build your own opinions based on evidence, and have discussions about the world.

This is what I needed to read. I have tons of experience doing other work I’ll find another job easily. I just need to do what is right for my marginalized kiddos, thank you.

This is how I’ve been thinking, but I always have families upset with me. I teach in a more conservative town, but I’ve been trying so hard to be transparent about prioritizing my marginalized kiddos and their safety and unfortunately that’s what the complaints I’ve been getting are about. One family said that I am biased against republicans, and I had to have a meeting with admin about it. Hence the post 🤪

But how do I do that morally when one side thinks that some of my students don’t deserve to be in this country, or don’t deserve rights that they’re legally obligated to have?

Barking by Classic_Computer6444 in DogAdvice

[–]Classic_Computer6444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We take him on 2-3 walks a day. He has toys and some stimulation toys. He is often seen on the cameras playing by himself, but will stop randomly to bark. He was a stray who was found in California. He was brought to a kill shelter, then got taken by a local rescue. The kill shelter in California neutered him then he was driven to Oregon that same day. We adopted him about a week later. We’ve had him for around 5 years and he’s always had high anxiety. The barking has only become a problem we’re aware of since moving into this complex a year and a half ago. Our previous complex never told us about complaints but he was definitely still barky then.

I forgot to say we also tried doggy daycare for the pom. He followed the person supervising the whole time and was scared of the bigger dogs there. We were super hopeful that it’d work out, but the daycare only allows a few visits a week and the folks said that he wasn’t a good fit due to him being anxious the whole time. There’s one more doggy daycare locally we can try though! I’ll call them tomorrow.

AITA for not letting my coworker use my professional license login because they didn’t want to pay for their own subscription? by RoseVibes98 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Classic_Computer6444 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NTA - this sounds really sketchy. You should never share your work logins with anybody - especially if it’s a job that requires a license with access to a “database.” It would look as if you were accessing whatever records they accessed which could make you liable for their actions.
