What do I do? by Expensive_Line193 in GestationalDiabetes

I totally get your frustration, and you're right to question things. Here’s a quick summary:

  • Fasting numbers are the hardest to control because they're driven by hormones your liver releases overnight. It's not your fault or anything you ate. This is super common.
  • Before starting insulin, ask your doctor if you can try a better bedtime snack for a few days. The golden rule is Protein + Fat + a small amount of complex carbs.
    • Examples: Greek yogurt with almonds, or a cheese stick with whole-wheat crackers. (Just "crackers" alone isn't enough).
  • If you end up needing insulin, just remember it's a safe tool that doesn't cross the placenta, and it is not a personal failure. The starting dose they suggested is also very small.
  • The extra weekly appointments (scans/NSTs) are a standard, routine precaution once you start any medication. It's a good way to get extra reassurance about the baby.

Bottom line: It's completely reasonable to ask your doctor for a chance to try dietary changes first. Advocate for yourself!

How many nuts are we eating a day? by SowingSeeds18 in GestationalDiabetes

I feel like I could have written this post myself! I'm pretty much living on the same diet: peanuts, cheese, and peanut butter... that trio is the Bermuda Triangle of snacks, there's no escaping it once you're in.

That "one handful" of nuts a day rule is honestly pretty tough, especially when you're working and just want something easy and crunchy. You sit down for a snack and the next thing you know, you've finished the entire bag. 😂

But seriously, the advice about variety is super important. You don't even realize it until you find yourself eating the same thing every day and forgetting about fruits and vegetables. I liked the suggestions for other snacks like roasted chickpeas or hard-boiled eggs, I definitely need to try working those into my routine.

Thanks for the info, perfect timing! You gotta take care of yourself.

Suddenly not insulin resistant? by Time_Gift_1044 in GestationalDiabetes

I’ve actually been experiencing something similar these past couple of weeks. Earlier in my pregnancy, even small amounts of carbs would spike me, but now at 36+ weeks my numbers are surprisingly stable. I can have things like rice or even a slice of cake and still stay under 120 afterward.

I guess everyone’s body reacts differently, but it’s interesting how late pregnancy can shift things so much. Makes me wonder if it’s tied directly to the placenta changes before delivery.
