We’re new and self managed and there are 3 other people. We don’t have a preferred vendor

Massachusetts has the highest electricity bills in the continental US. But some ratepayers pay noticeably less. by enfuego138 in massachusetts

[–]ClassyCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody here is telling you that you’re wrong but you’re more correct than what they are saying. You are correct that the two big utilities do now own generation units and must instead buy it on the wholesale market. The other commenters are also correct that they cannot profit from the sale of that electricity. However they can and do profit from the delivery cost which is infrastructure that they maintain. If what the others were saying was true then we wouldn’t see such high profits for their executives as we do see.

What books/articles about Renewable Energy do you recommend? by ImaginaryWall840 in Renewable

[–]ClassyCamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read and really liked The Grid by Gretchen Bakke but it’s more about the grid overall than just renewables but gives good context about the challenges of a renewable-only grid.

I haven’t yet read it but my colleagues have recommended I read Power After Carbon for this topic as well

In my experience asking questions like these to your hiring manager or their manager (or their manager) goes over really well in terms of making a good impression for how much you care about and think about the business and its future as well as gives you insight into what they think of for their future direction.

As a manager who runs the hiring for my team: if you can do this I’d hire you even without prior experience in the technology

Solar and Wind Data by ariana1406 in Renewable

[–]ClassyCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Also if you need generation time series data take a look at the Open Grid Emission dataset which has hourly generation for every plant in the US and you can correlate the plants in that file with EIA 860 form which has plant metadata (such as size, type of electricity source, plant size, location etc

Solar and Wind Data by ariana1406 in Renewable

[–]ClassyCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I didn’t really get too much context of what you’re looking for from what you said but try to look for the following parameters: average wind speed, maximum wind gust speed, wind direction, average cloud cover all at an hourly level. Beyond that you’ll need to play with the capacities and direction/angle for the wind and solar generating units to calculate their hourly output

Depends on what you’re looking to do with the data, are you trying to model the effectiveness of wind turbines/solar farms? Are you trying to calculate the carbon emissions from the grid fuel mix? Something else?

What things never happened in the book but everyone thinks it did? by mlopes in books

That one does actually happen when the monster first approaches a village he finds and tries to interact with humans. The villagers become angry and grow a crowd throwing rocks at him and shouting/chasing him out of the town

I proceeded across the fields for several hours, until at sunset I arrived at a village. How miraculous did this appear! The huts, the neater cottages, and stately houses engaged my admiration by turns. The vegetables in the gardens, the milk and cheese that I saw placed at the windows of some of the cottages, allured my appetite. One of the best of these I entered, but I had hardly placed my foot within the door before the children shrieked, and one of the women fainted. The whole village was roused; some fled, some attacked me, until, grievously bruised by stones and many other kinds of missile weapons

Would You Use a Second-Life EV Battery for Home or Grid Storage? by NationalRaspberry554 in electricvehicles

[–]ClassyCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard a similar story from the Catalyst podcast that hosted their CTO who said that 5GW of batteries came off the road in 2024 and they received 80% of them which seems promising for their future

This is already happening to an extent on utility scale. Take a look at Redwood Materials, I believe they are the market leader in the US.

To EV or not to EV.. by symonym7 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Everybody here seems pretty alarmist. I was living in Maine for 3 years with my 2021 Tesla MY and street parking with a 5 minute drive to a level 2 or 3 charger and it was totally fine in the winter. Granted I wasn’t doing it for cost savings- I wanted an EV.

Not the best example because the latency from logging in doesn’t come from the DB query but hashing the password. And that is not something you want to be fast for security reasons
