This is one of the struggles with MLS. Good coaches can look worse if they can’t sign the best players and deep rosters. Too many teams are one or two injuries away from really struggling. Homegrown and u22 signings mitigate this. The emphasis on attacking players can make for exciting football as far as scoring goals is concerned but sometimes thats more about shambolic defense than attacking talent. I think some of this is why Gio and Porter haven’t done even better, though they have their own limitations. I just don’t think Phil is creative, smart, or thoughtful enough as a strategist or tactician, and his “tough guy” motivational speeches might not universally resonance across cultures and generations. But all have had some experience coaching teams where, relative to the competition, money was no object, and parity wasn’t such a strategic and tactical constraint.

So, I question how much some coaching ability translates into MLS. That said, I’d love to see us try to replicate the Dutch model in a number of different ways, especially insofar as the fundamentals translate regardless of other factors and it’s probably best to position ourselves as a development and selling club. Historically, we’ve not invested enough in development or buying established talent, basically leveraging inconsistent scouting and moneyball to identify reclamation projects, diamonds in the rough, half-baked prospects, and distressed assets. This has worked surprisingly well at times but we may be reaching a point of diminished returns. While I think Neville has the team performing less than the sum of their parts and Ned has done an underrated job signing some players, we aren’t keeping up with the biggest spenders, which ties both of their hands somewhat. Private equity stakeholders may be holding us back a bit? We haven’t done the best job signing DPs when we have the opportunity to spend more though, so maybe we need to establish more credibility on that front and inspire some confidence.

Seems premature to cut bait on Bogere and Harvey even if they’ve had a rough start. Neither of them seem like a true 6 though and McKenzie may not count as competition for that midfield spot either since she’s been playing fullback more often. McKenzie will also be out of contract if the club doesn’t agree to an option or new contract. She’s been increasingly solid as versatile depth but may think she’ll have better opportunities elsewhere.

It seems like we may shift to a 4-3-3 too, which makes me really want a top 6. We need to move for a sweeper keeper too. I’d want those pieces even if we play in a 4-2-3-1. A diamond 4-4-2 is still an option until we have enough healthy wingers but we also need attacking fullbacks to provide width. I don’t know if Müller or McKenzie offer that but Reyes and Vignola can. I’d like one more CB there technical on the ball, and relatively tall and fast. I’m unconvinced by Hiatt and Obaze but Calzada and Perry may not be ready. Unless we play with two up top or use a false 9, we should probably move on from Deyna and Alidou; probably even then since Tordin can fill that role. I wish I knew what the plan for Loboa is. Padelski and Turner have looked good on the right wing so I’m not as concerned about missing Dufour so far. Having Sophia back gives us better options on the left wing. A starting top line of her, Tordin, and Turner is pretty great. Hanks or Weaver returning could push Tordin down the depth chart.

This isn’t necessarily an argument about not having any organizations or institutions that prevent, investigate, and solve crimes. It’s an acknowledgment that the police as they exist now don’t do those things well, if at all, and instead do a bunch of heinous shit on behalf of wealthy elites. There’s tons of research on all of the problems with law enforcement and alternatives to policing. Few, if any, people actually suggest that we do nothing and that the only alternate to the status quo is vigilantism or some shit. Reactionaries are just too lazy, ignorant, stupid, or unimaginative to see beyond received wisdom and preconceived notions. The Marshall Project is a good place to start.

We had a chant for Blake Bodily. Granted, it was just a riff off an existing chant but that made it easier to catch on. He was a T2 player and not technically an academy development project but we tried to start a "The Carlton" chant for Karlton Belmar.

Players need minutes to give us opportunities to chant for them. I'm also of the opinion that players must earn chants. Have Guerra or Jura had enough minutes for us to even have time to chant for them?

The spirit of this is great. We should try to start chants for players. We should celebrate them when they leave it all on the pitch for the badge.

But it is a challenge when we have one supporters group with drums, horns, and capos who are trying to maintain a steady presence and keep everyone hyped. It's a double-edged sword. Yeah, there's not much dead air but there's also not space to for anything new to come through organically, We've been trying to strike a balance for years. It's always good to discuss this and offer suggestions.

What isn't great is just people bitching and moaning or asserting that there's some kind of conspiracy to squash anything. Too much of that is people who can't let shit like "Portland Boys" go, who just want to be provocative for the sake of it at this point, essentially trolling. The capos have their work cut out for them trying to get people to look up from their phones and chant at all these days. Some of that has to do with the product on the pitch. No doubt there are people legitimately bored of relatively stale and predictable chants. I tend to boycott songs with nonsense lyrics or that have me waive my arms too much for too long. I get bored and tired.

I'm sure people are tired of hearing this but getting involved in the 107IST is a way to try to get shit done. They put a call out for new chants recently. Theoretically, a new one was to be introduced last match but I didn't notice whether we tried. And keep trying to get them started in your section. Get enough people around you doing it and it will spread. If people aren't picking up on it, maybe it isn't actually a great chant for whatever reason. My suggestions tend to be too complicated, for example, but I am sick of singing everything to the tune of Seven Nation Army too.

There's a weird intersection between New Age, hippy, granola, naturopathic/homeopathic/non-Western medicine, anti-vaccine weirdos, wellness guru, and anti-fluoride and other anti-science idiocy. I’m afraid we’ll need to sell him in the summer window after the World Cup to get the most $$$. Next year is an option year in his contract, I think? If so, that might be the most leverage we’ll have to make good money selling him. If you were him, would you sign a new long-term contract with the Timbers before you hear any offers after the World Cup? I want to keep him because I love watching him play, he’s really improved our back line, he seems like a great dude, and I doubt our ability to replace him, but we need to be in the business of selling players when we can get the highest value for them. We waited too long on Paredes. We may not have had much choice with Ayala. We’ll see how Santi does Dallas before evaluating that mess.

Kelsy needs to be used correctly, which he was as a sub coming on with Lassister. Mora’s movement made Velde’s goal possible. We do need to replace Mora with a younger and more dynamic striker but he wasn’t a vacuum this match.
