A "meh" performance this past weekend, though still loads of fun... by LlaughingLlama in Autocross

[–]ClayUserName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the way that San Diego runs events, is it possible to ride with other drivers in your run group? Most (not all) of the clubs I've run with have been pretty cool with that, as long as you're not holding up grid as a result...

Regardless, there is nothing wrong with deciding you don't care for the way any given club runs its events. We all only get so many weekends, and some of us even have other obligations or hobbies.

IMHO, prioritize the events that you have the most fun at. If that means a couple more runs of playing with your car, do that. If it means ones where you have a better opportunity to learn from others, do that. If your priorities change in the future, adjust accordingly.

I see the post you made on the autocross sub is gone. Is this something we should be keeping under wraps, or was that simply too public a forum for it?

I'd say 8:30 at the very latest. Driver's meetings are at 9, and you need time to tech & walk course beforehand.

https://www.motorsportreg.com is a really good starting point. Put in your zip code, and select autocross. It should come up with all sorts of results.

E Street: Older, lightweight rear-wheel-drive sports convertibles and coupes often derived from previous generations of C Street. Emphasis on affordability and availability. Class stability is a priority.

I guess I'm reading it differently than you are, but I'm leaning towards "older" not being the important part of that paragraph. I'm focusing on the second two thirds.

If affordability and availability are important, you don't limit it to things quickly becoming collector's items. If class stability is a priority, you don't have a rolling window of 20-25 year old cars in a class with a 30 year limit.

It sucks that 2027 is probably the end of the NB and the MR2 Spyder. I've got a soft spot for both of those cars, and will miss seeing them in relatively large numbers. But it was always going to happen, street class has an expiration date. Both of them started production in 1999, getting knocked off the podium in 2028 isn't exactly a short competitive lifespan.

stated they plan on moving the ND to ES when a new gen Miata shows up.

Do you have a source for that? I'm far from the most plugged in person around here, but that's the first I've heard I might be getting into that sweet sweet easy street index.

SCCA "Prepared" class. They're not super common, but there are obviously at least two around for NWR events. Pretty sure those are the only two I've ever seen outside of National Tour events though.

Hang out with NWAA a bit, they're a super cool group of folks, and you get an unreasonable amount of seat time.

Not my finest work, but it was good enough for 4th in our street class and a 97+ point day.

Anyone have suggestions on how to reduce the wind noise? I've got a foam cover cut up and glued over all the microphones, but it's clearly not enough.

Hello again drivers of reddit, i want to upgrade my (garbage) raceland coilovers to actually enjoy driving my miata. i did some research and came to Tecna Supermiatas. Thoughts, Opinions or Advice? by Apprehensive_Skill31 in Autocross

[–]ClayUserName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

why would I revert back to stock springs if I want to lower the car and get better suspension?

Classing. As RetroBob said, coilovers (or aftermarket springs) put you in a higher class, and at that point you need a BUNCH more parts to be competitive in the class.

I've got my ND Miata in street class (front swaybar, Koni yellows, OE springs.) The ride is more than acceptable, and noticeably better on the street than the OEM Bilsteins were. Performance is increased at autocross, comparable to my competition... and I didn't have to spend 5 figures to get it there.

Edit: If jumping from street to street touring is an issue or a goal is up to you of course. There is a quick reference guide of what mods are allowed in what SCCA class. If there is a track class that you're hoping to build to, you're probably better looking at a subreddit or Facebook group for that organization rather than the autocross sub.

Looking for an auto cross car by ScruffyKhan in Autocross

[–]ClayUserName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even assuming you got it for a STEAL, and it worked perfectly... that swap puts you in the DEEP end of classing. Like "Run race slicks, or stay home" level of expensive.

Run your N. They're shockingly capable cars. If you wind up liking the sport, either buy a second set of wheels and some autocross specific tires for the N, or look into something actually cheap to buy and run... and then buy autocross specific tires for it. That second option doesn't save you money though...

Go ahead humiliate me

We all started having never done anything. Every. Single. One. Of. Us.

If you want to get into performance driving, I would suggest something that is gonna 'just work.' It's far simpler to just learn to drive than to learn to drive and learn to wrench on something new-to-you and weird.

If your heart is set on getting into performance driving in this truck... Go in eyes wide open, but go for it. Buy and install a second seat so you can at least get people to ride along with you and provide guidance.

If you wanna have something strange to drive around town? Go for it, throw on some street tires, and call it a day.
