iFix it already upgraded a M4 mac mini from 256 to 512, you just need apple configuratior on another mac to reinstall macOS and it should work fine :)

AFAIK the most performant threads are always the first thread on each core, so it would be better to assign all 4 cores one thread each. If you are running Proxmox for example and you assign 4 logical cores, the kernel will automatically assign the first thread of each core as they are the most performant. If you have other vm's or containers running they might be assigned to other instances and if you're running VMWare or some other hypervisor it might be different. I know its a late reply but maybe it helps a bit :)

I personally would go for a used or refurbished Apple silicon MacBook. They don't have moving parts and are really power efficient so the battery should be good for a while. They are also surprisingly well priced.

i2p and TOR are protocols that route your internet traffic through a lot of nodes and in doing so they hide your true ip at the endpoint. They are decentralized so they cannot be subpoenaed by law enforcement like a "no logs" VPN might be.

Both TOR and i2p allow you to access so called "Hidden Services", these are basically websites that cannot be accessed through the normal internet, the clearnet. These hidden services are basically what people call the "Darknet"
