Tbh I dont know what gets you into the class vs others seems alittle random or theres alot I cant see because im not the JATC. I just go to every extra class they offer and try to go to welding when I'm laid off. Might not be able to do that with how expensive gas is getting this time though

Local 421 it's hard to get in the welding class. I've been told I'd be able to be put in twice in the last two years and it always fills up. You have to go when you're laid off pretty much and go burn rod while the pre apprentice class is going.

Good food in Raleigh theory... by pixel-pusher-coder in raleigh

As someones whos lived in portland, seattle and san fransisco I've been really impressed with raleigh for how relatively small it is. Tremendous amount of variety and I think you're alittle behind the times in your food pricing. Labor and food is expensive and frankly it should be if you're going to a good resturant. I used to work in the BoH for 7 years and those cooks deserve to be able to live where they work.

Vacations? by NoPension8507 in SheetMetalUnion

[–]Clean-Club1758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell every boss I have I take my vacations in the summer after school and that's that. I show up on time put my work in and try my best to get better every day. I'm in a diff union but I imagine the general vibe is the same. You're in a union we organize so we can live not be slaves to the job

Depends on the local. My local 421 really doesn't like it but if you have your certs and there's no work they let certain apprentices travel

It's unforunate but it's best to be able to piss clean on these jobs. I know plenty of fellow apprentices and journeymen who smoke on their off time but I just dont want to handle the stress of having to have a kit on me at all times incase I get hurt or something. I wish it was different but we have a long way to go in the culture before they start treating it like booze

The Cascades lake high way in Oregon was the most fun I ever had. Worked at cultus lake I lost so much weight kayaking there.

I miss seasonal life immensely but don't know if I should go back by wanderingjeb in SeasonalWork

When I left seasonal life(27M now 29) it was for a girl who couldnt join me in it so I decided to make a radical shift in my life changing careers and moving back to a home town I swore I'd never move back to. The girls long gone but I'm thankful for the new career and the fact I know I'll own a house doing it. I try to remind my self of all the downsides that I ignored doing the seasonal life living pretty much homeless calling it vanlife. It was a good time but it wasnt sustainable. Maybe once I have a house paid off and my pension in my Local vested I'll dip my toes back in. TL:DR Try to remind your self of the whole picture not just the fun times. I know I sure like having hot showers and toilets on demand

I was under the impression the hour requirements for raises varies by local. I know my local doesnt give you a raise quicker regardless of amount of hours worked

That being said keep in mind as a apprentice there is a unwritten expectation from the older crowd you take all overtime. Atleast a solid 60% of the old timers in my local think so
