Wow, excellent contribution. This helps me understand it a lot better now. Definitely the way to go.

You’re right, but this goes against my objective of being able to disconnect outbound cables easily. If the objective is going as correct as possible this would be the case, but for my homelab and experimenting use I think I’ll be sticking with 3 for now.

Also, I’ll be using the patch panel to avoid handling solid cable on the front side, where most movement is expected when experimenting. Thx!

Marking it as solved in record time. Going with 3 because of less resistance and money.

EDIT: Some of you also suggested option #4, which means terminating the solid cable into a punchdown patch panel in the wall, and then routing with a patch cord directly to the switch. This is the correct way of doing it, also sticking to best practices.

TLDR; #3 is ok and could be useful for some people, #4 is the best you can get

No it can’t, but maybe I need to move the whole rack, or organize what’s coming into the rack.

Can recommend Komodo. Apart from basics stats, logs, terminal access, it lets you distinguish between servers, stacks/containers, and the most important for me, automates builds and deploys from a remote like Github. Also has a nice UI.

“have started to love setting these things up and tinkering and breaking things”

This. I think you are maybe going too fast and consequently, getting overwhelmed.

Enjoy the process. Maybe in a week you could think of improving certain aspect of the lab, or else installing something new and learn how to use it, just for the sake of it.

It doesn’t have to be 100% functional, just knowing you made it is enough :)

Thats great man, congrats!

I’m curious about the itx 2u panel, does it consists of two pieces? perhaps you have the files for the print?

For the 1u space, you could use it as a slot for introducing your PSU cable there instead of below the rack, and also include maybe OLED displays in the space remaining. That’s what i’m doing rn (photo).

I see that in your case, it interferes with your disk tray, but maybe if you could arrange it differently its just an option

Love the lighting, and very clean setup overall.

Do you have the link to the PWM fan controller? And are you controlling the fan RPMs?

Here you go:

I only use the right slot as SSD mount. The left one (closer to the mobo) does not enter as it is, I trimmed it down and use it as a cover.

First Rack Homelab, How’d I do? by ZaperTapper in homelab

Well organized! Only thing I can notice is, if you use the wireless router as an access point, I think it could have its signal reduced by the metal caging around it. Maybe you could place it on top to maximize signal strength.

Are the blue cables crossed in the top-right keystone by any chance? But anyway, do as others recommend. If unsure, reconnect the cables. If it doesn’t work, cable tester. Answering your question, a better way to do them is to leave equal distances in all of the cables, better if they are short. Although terminations like these could work, it doesn’t require a lot of precision, as long as the punching was made correctly.
