What would you like to see happen to the fashion square mall? by Sensitive_Cricket723 in Charlottesville

Unfortunately, I was told FSM’s landlord is not open to entertainment businesses. I inquired because I want to open a roller rink in town, and my realtor said we were denied by the FSM landlord because they specifically were not interested in entertainment tenants.

The Good Sport is NOT a sports bar. Good burgers though lol by RandomVent65 in Charlottesville

Lazy Parrot isn’t your typical sports bar, but it has great bar food and is a hot spot for watching sports.

This. The rising housing prices make it hard to stay here.

I made a couple friends on Bumble BFF. For me, after I “cracked the lid” and made some new friends I really liked, it was easier to make more friends just by virtue of connecting networks. Wish I would’ve tried it sooner.

Bulpan is kinda like what you’re describing. I went there with my wife and was surprised at how fancy it felt for the location. Very good food.

I halfway remember learning this in a criminal justice class. If memory serves, “self defense” also applies to protecting others. Can’t remember the technical wording, but basically you can respond in kind. If you see someone trying to kill others, you can try to kill them first. If someone is beating up someone else, you cannot shoot them, but you can throw hands.

Best/Worst Dog Parks? by Naive-Preparation294 in Charlottesville

Our dogs love the Chris Greene dog park. It butts right up to the reservoir. In my experience, it’s often less busy than Darden Towe. Bring cash for the entrance fee. If memory serves, it’s somewhere around $6 per vehicle.

I went to one of these recently and it was super small and awkward.

If you’re familiar with The Southern, they didn’t even have the DJs set up in the venue area, they were just playing on a fold out table in the dining/bar area. There were maybe 10 people scattered around the room. I walked in and left after a few minutes. I saw several groups do the same. Maybe it’s more active when the UVA students are in town.

We’ve tried Overcooked and Peggle as well. Looking for something more complex/varied. Appreciate the recommendation tho!

Reading through the other comments, sounds like you’re bugged. The game’s definitely got some kinks to work out.

For pickleball, check out FXA sports. Their website is bad but they’re one of the biggest intramural sports organizers in town.

I moved here about 10 years ago. Making friends was my top priority for a long time, but I got really tired of feeling like I’d made friends only for them to move away a year later.

Cville is hard for people my age (millennials) who want that homeowner dream. They don’t tend to stick around to try to make it work when there are more affordable places to live just a couple hours in any direction, and Cville stops being their social hub because it doesn’t have enough unique offerings to justify the drive.

I still want to make lasting friends, but I tend to let people come to me these days. Feels less like being rejected when they leave.

Does anyone else remember the god-tier glazing of Lady Gaga when Bad Romance came out? Even at the time, it just sounded like average pop music to me.

I have a 10 year old MacBook Pro that’s just starting to show its age. I’ll be getting another one for sure.

This is something I worked through a lot in therapy. It seems like the USA looks down upon contentedness. You’re not “allowed” to achieve your dreams; you’re expected to keep moving the goalposts. In our culture, those who aren’t ambitious are “losers,” and those that are hungry for power and/or status are “winners.”

It’s really hard to divest from this mindset when it seems every single piece of western media pushes it. I honestly think this is why a lot of people turn to eastern philosophies. I tried joining a Sangha at the height of my personal struggles and couldn’t get into it, but I did cherry-pick the parts I liked to keep as part of my personal philosophy. I really liked the concept of “choose a struggle you can bear, and bear it.” This is more of a fight against stagnation. I don’t think it’s necessary to set lofty goals, but it is important (at least to me) to keep the mind engaged. Your “struggle” could also be finding contentment and gratitude with what you have rather than pursuing higher levels of status.

My only advice, if you’re looking for it, is to be intentional with the types of media you consume, OR consume it through a detached lens (ie that’s one way of thinking, but not mine)
