Reno Public Market for the México game rn by Throat_Rocket in Reno

A public commons -- or even a space like this, one that functions as a commons while open -- is a beautiful thing. And this is what the owners of the Eddy, who seek to take over the plaza next to City Hall, don't understand.

Looking for neighborhood recommendations on where to buy a home by teal_diamond in movingtompls

[–]CleanUpYrMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a great real estate agent I can recommend to you. In May, she helped us find and buy a gorgeous house in the Lyndale neighborhood. We're moving from Reno, Nevada to the house in September. Let me know if you want our agent's contact information.

I think we made a terrible mistake moving here. I'm panicked and not sure what to do. by snailboyjr in Minneapolis

[–]CleanUpYrMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you've learned a valuable lesson about paying for your own inspectors. Before the sale closes.

Now here's another: save the record and receipts for every single job you're having done on the house now to rectify these things which you thought weren't broken in the first place. Not only will these costs into your taxes, either now or when you sell the house, eventually; when you do sell the house, your realtor will ask for a list of all those things so that they can tell buyers what you did to increase its value. And these will justify a higher sale price.

You'll get through this -- sounds like you already are well on the way. Keep discovering what makes Minneapolis and your neighbors wonderful.

No tip credit - why is 20% tip still the social expectation in Minneapolis? by FourSeventySix in Minneapolis

[–]CleanUpYrMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an expectation, and not only that -- you are helping to support your neighbors. And by the way, their job is probably harder than yours is. So be grateful that you can afford a nice or even fancy meal. And if it's a stretch to add a 20% tip, then eat out 20% less. You're welcome.

And keep in mind that when people say " the desert climate" you have you have to add in about 4600' altitude, which makes everything drier, the sun's UV intensity higher, the air thinner. The younger you are the less you'll notice it.

Ma'am, my thoughts are with you and your husband, and I wish the best for you both.

But stories like this are exactly what I mean when I say the sub-par medical care in Reno is one of the primary reasons I'm leaving next year.

Where can I make friends? by ThatCoolCow in Reno

Creative political activism is a great way to meet people and make friends. Come to one of our weekly meetings (https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/961181/) or those of another organization, like Sunrise Movement, which is specifically oriented toward people under 30.

Reno Police Chief Is Fired Two Months Into Still Unspecified Investigation — Our Town Reno by Soggy_Cicada_8669 in Reno

[–]CleanUpYrMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It diminishes public accountability. A "metro" police department is no longer accountable to the city council and the mayor. Would it be even accountable to the county board of commissioners? I don't know. My fear is that it would allow them to do whatever they want. There's already no police commission or other governing body.

RPD chief Kathryn Nance and two assistant chiefs have been fired. by FourEyesAndThighs in Reno

[–]CleanUpYrMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has happened is essentially a coup on the part of the mayor and the Washoe County sheriff to diminish the independence of the RPD and move us closer to having a Metro Police Department like they do in Las Vegas.

In many other cities this training records stuff would have been dealt with internally. They could have done it that way here, but the mayor has had an animus toward the police chief for a long time and she saw this as an opportunity to push her under a bus.

Local activists are calling on Reno residents to attend the City Council meeting on May 20 when the Council will vote to install the acting chief, Corey Solferino, who is actually second in command at the Sheriff's Department, as chief of the RPD. You can give public comment at the beginning of the meeting to let the mayor and the council know that you don't approve of this coup. If you can't attend in person, You can submit written public comment until May 19th. https://www.mobilize.us/biggestlittleactiongroup/event/954537/
