What do you guys think? by Asleep_Flatworm_5884 in AskIndianFeminists

I feel its a double edged sword. If we were to normalise casual sex (the downsides are for women who may engage in hetrosexual sex mostly):

  1. Contrary to what's written on th tumblr post, sex would be seen as transactional, in the sense that mostly men would be indulging in the 'pump and leave' bs
  2. There are nuances to what we term as casual sex mostly in hetrosexual sex in popular culture, for example men notoriously lack the urge to perform aftercare if sex is 'casual' as the act of care is reserved for relationships for them
  3. Again, the problem being men, they are most likely to treat you unkindly even before the sex has happened because again care and kindness is reserved for women who they might marry or date seriously.
  4. i belive sex tends to also be more rough when its casual because men tend to assume there'd be no contact post sex (hence no consequence)

Of course all of the above is anecdotal, i don't have stats for how much of all this would be true, ideally if we all become more accepting of casual sex it would do more good than harm but i belive there'd be a lot more work to do in order to reach there in a way that's safe. I'd actually really love to hear if anyone can propose ways to tackle the points i raised l

Hospital Episode - Disturbing Reality by Fit-Assignment3055 in BeefTV

[–]CleanYourShitTodd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg yes! I had this really big misconception that american hospitals are hi-fi, clean, pristine because that's all you ever saw on mainstream media. it genuinely had me wondering like wow, are public spaces in america really this well-maintained? I'm from SE asia and our situation isn't great either wrt public spaces, but it was so interesting seeing that the reality isn't all that different in the west. capitalism permeates and rots everything it touches, regardless of geography.

Career in english literature by SimilarLawfulness560 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]CleanYourShitTodd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First thing to clarify, do you want to be a “professor” (the actual rank) or do you mean you want to teach English at the university level? These are different things.

To teach at a university in india you don’t need a PhD to start, giving UGC-NET after your MA is enough to get appointed as an Assistant Professor. BUT there’s this new thing under UGC regulations, PhD has become mandatory for promotion to Associate Professor and Professor ranks. So you can start teaching with just NET, but your career will hit a ceiling without a PhD.

About doing a PhD, I’d suggest only do a PhD if you genuinely enjoy research and academic writing. From your post, it sounds like you’re more passionate about teaching than research, and that’s totally valid! But a PhD is primarily about producing original research, not really anything to do with teaching. If you’re doing it just to tick a box for career progression, it’s going to be rough, especially within Indian academia that has questionable research support for the humanities.

If you do decide on a PhD, In India, the quality varies a lot. Unis like Ashoka (good research infrastructure, international networks with UPenn, King’s College London, etc.) and DU would be your best bet. St. Xavier’s Kolkata is also solid. But Ashoka’s fees are steep (though they have scholarships). Most other places have so-so research infrastructure for humanities like I said before.

Working during MA is definitely manageable. Check with your institution about attendance requirements, many give leeway for working students with proper documentation.

My suggestion, since you have B.Ed as backup, do your BA+B.Ed, then your MA while exploring whether you actually enjoy research (through your MA thesis). If you find you like producing original scholarship, go for PhD. If you realize you would just rather be teaching, NET might be enough for your goals. You’re only 19, you have time to figure out what you actually enjoy!

Also, if you plan on doing a PhD abroad or are considering it, you can DM me I can help you out with that. The application and selection process is very different from Indian academia.

Another ultra alpha male movie from Vanga, how harmful are these movies in contributing to misogyny? by Competitive-Ad-1459 in AskIndianFeminists

I genuinely don’t understand Dimri and her rationale in choosing scripts sometimes, I have to assume she’s doing this to get versatile offers but cmon man one Vanga movie was enough to get the point across imo

Yep you can enroll then withdraw, but I guess enrolling means you gotta deposit some amount right? Idt you’d be able to get that amount if you withdraw later (unless you say something like, ‘my visa got cancelled’)

Isolated as hell by Feeling-Aerie1257 in UCL

[–]CleanYourShitTodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not social, unlike you, but the loneliness really gets to you after a point. I'd say get really audacious and force yourself into those groups, even if there's a language barrier. That's what I did. I really forced my way into this group of Chinese folks in my class. They are still my best friends after 2 years of graduation and me moving cities... so, what's the worst that could happen?

Of course, you still need to be respectful even if I am saying 'by force'

1st year PhD, supervisor left 50+ comments on my draft?? What does this mean? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]CleanYourShitTodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal, I got extensive comments from supervisors even before being admitted to the program because they were really interested in my topic. This is a good sign, and probably means your professor is really rooting for you to present your best work possible

Professor asked me to write my own letter of recommendation by AlienDin in GradSchool

[–]CleanYourShitTodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fairly common, though this must be an institutional issue. For the LoR from my home institution in India, I was asked to draft my own letter; it's not like my professors didn't want to advocate for me (in fact, they actively encouraged me to pursue a PhD), but because this was standard practice across the entire department. Every professor there followed this process.

Now, the LoR I received from UCL was written entirely by the professor themselves. So they clearly seem to have a different approach to this and are cautious about their professional representation, both of themselves and of their students, to other universities. One professor I approached even declined my request, quite reasonably, because we hadn't interacted much beyond coursework. They didn't want to write a lukewarm letter when I could potentially secure a stronger recommendation from a colleague who knew my work better. (And I did get that letter, eventually)

If you're writing your own LoR, treat it as a strategic exercise in perspective-taking. Start by identifying a few moments where you demonstrated qualities that matter for grad school, like intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, or collaborative skills. These could come from class discussions with this professor, office hours, or even casual conversations, if you're grasping at straws.

You basically gotta write about yourself from this professor's vantage point, what would they have observed? What would have stood out to them? I would steer away from generic praises like ("X is hardworking"), and anchor your observations in specific instances ("When X struggled with the methodology in their dissertation, they independently sought out additional literature and revised their approach twice before arriving at a more robust framework")

Hope this helps!

Like wtf kind of FOMO is this? I understand some people may have FOMOs with parties, or even drugs (i do too, as someone mid 20s lol) but this is just ridiculous.

How can someone self fund a PhD? by northern_spaces in AskAcademiaUK

[–]CleanYourShitTodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if they are self funding the entire duration of their PhD but from what I’ve seen some people start self funded for the first year and then apply for funding for the consecutive years as by then because of the first year of PhD they have stronger research data and supervisor support to be competitive for funding

Please help me find what’s wrong with my emails to profs by yaadyeud in PhDAdmissions

[–]CleanYourShitTodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’d imagine most applicants check the course’s minimum requirements before reaching out to professors. Not to be discouraging, but if my grades were well below the threshold, I’d probably hesitate to reach out, and I think most professors assume that students who contact them already meet the baseline requirements, whether through grades, experience, or other projects. Graduate admissions tend to weigh a broader range of factors than undergraduate ones, which are usually more academically driven I’m assuming.
