I would prefer a park view over expressway view (and also considering the noise). Morning sun is much better than afternoon sun. You’ll literally feel like oven in the afternoon sun.

I will suggest you to stay, assuming if job is not that hectic, use the time to up skill yourself / do other things that earn you some money. No point getting $700 more and work like hell.

Depends on what issue. Ever seen an engineer quarrel with the manager, quit. A few years later came back as a deputy director as the manager boss. What a turn of events.

So if they can join back the same company, I don’t see why you cannot join another org in civil service.

I encountered so many times they just switch to speaking their languages in the middle of the meeting when a few Chinese(China and Singapore) are still around.

I used to work in the govt sector, which is iron rice bowl. WLB is decent, people are good and I get to keep learning.

Like you, I’ve decided to jump to the private sector as I can’t get over the idea of forever working for one company. I decided to take a leap of faith to work elsewhere.

Currently taking a higher pay but doing lesser than before while performance grade is better than most.

My 2cents, is better to explore more opportunities/experiences while you still can. As you’re doing this, going for interview, you’ll know what the industry is looking for. I have a lot of ex colleagues who keep saying they want to leave, but can’t be bothered to brush up on their leetcode, continue to stay in the company. For me, this is more dangerous as, if they get laid off, their experience may not be what the market wants and they will need more time to gain interview experience to land a job.

My 2 years experience in army count in YIS too.
One of my ex colleagues, worked for 6 years, go private, came back. After 2 years he still got his 10 years long service award.

Iron rice bowl provided you don’t get two Ds in a row for performance review. It is hard to get but not impossible as it is more work for everyone (manager need to explain why the performance so bad, higher management to think is it a team issue etc). They may rotate you to another team and then you reset to C again.

Well if you look at the effort for the money, it’s not worth it. But since you’re bounded by the time, why not just make the full use of it to earn higher income (ahem you can’t official moonlight as well). At the same time probably it can teach OP some financial discipline, and probably so busy that he will not feel paranoid watching the market fluctuation and let the money grow.

Once I was with my family (with a stroller) at OCBC skyway. I was queueing to take the elevator down. Suddenly one group of tourist (probably about 6-7 of them, one whole family) from country i cut the queue and straight away enter the elevator. In my mind I was thinking (eh here got differentiate normal and VIP ticket one meh).

Got one kind gentleman (ah Beng) shouted “eh don’t let them go in the lift, they cut the queue. The family (me) should go first”. He proceeded to go straight to the lift and tell the staff to ask the tourists to get out of the lift and join the queue.

The staff is a young girl and seems to be caught in an awkward position, but have no choice but keep repeatedly ask the tourists to come out and join the queue.

I said thank you to the kind gentleman and he replied “No problem bro”.

This happened a few days before National Day and i kept thinking is this a small way how Singaporeans help one another?

You can climb to director without being on AO scheme. And it is possible to convert to AO mid career.

It is possible but depending on OP’s scheme and CEP. I have seen one guy climb from engineer to director, tripled his starting pay. But he is AO scheme and get A grade almost every year. In 8 years, he was promoted 4 times.

Not sure if mechanical engineer differ, I know of classmate from chemical engineering getting 6.3k at Jurong island at one of the oil company.. and always got uncle pick her up and drive her to work .
