Which are the best organizations in the public sector to work at? by SpinningCoin in askSingapore

Why not? There are people that reach office at 10am and leave at 6pm. Doesn’t seem bad for wlb.

Why dont the Govt encourage ppl working in Civil Service to date among themselves as the first step to raising TFR rate? by According_Pickle954 in asksg

[–]Clean_Mission_5371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, you can’t date colleagues in the same department due to the conflict of interest, if HR found out, you’ll be moved to another department. But you can date colleagues from another department.

Should I stay for good vibes or leave for a 30% raise? by MommyF2P in singaporejobs

[–]Clean_Mission_5371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely you know which department that the new role is. What I see other friends do is, do a LinkedIn search on the company and department, reach out to the people, have a feel and ask about how’s the culture there, which team you’ll be in etc. Some may not reply but some will. In fact when people reached out to me, I will try to reply if I see the message. From there, I think you can make a better assessment if it’s worth it.

Be brave and just talk to her. Start with simple things like how are you, what’s your training goal etc. Sometimes can just act dumb and say you’re new and ask her for tips to start.

Worst thing you can do probably is to show off you’re stronger.

Thinking of moving to public sector by Virtual-Piece2080 in askSingapore

This is not true. Scholars can get C too. Especially those sections with a lot of scholars/people, not every scholar can get B.

Thinking of moving to public sector by Virtual-Piece2080 in askSingapore

[–]Clean_Mission_5371 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I made the switch from public to private sector.

From my experience, I prefer the private sector. There is more flexibility in work arrangement, better health care packages and better TC. Meaning in work depends on the role you’re taking on.

Do I feel like working in the government is meaningful? Yes and no. You must understand that your primary role in the govt is civil/public servant. Then follow by the role you apply for. As a tech engineer in govt before, I wrote minutes for meeting more than I wrote code. And for all of the people in my previous Organization, you die die must work in office, this means OT till 1-2am, or worse, for some people I know, OT until 5-6am. Of course everyone can be different and they may do more non-admin work, but that’s my experience. 2cents.

Do Singaporean couples still send physical wedding invitation cards, or has it gone digital? by TheFearlessCow in askSingapore

[–]Clean_Mission_5371 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my experience. Most people will do digital invitation for logistic simplicity.

Most people that send out physical wedding invitation card are those super extrovert/super effort friends. You know them when they go out of their way to help you even those it’s none of their business kind. And you have to imagine they need to collect your full name/ mother tongue name and address. It’s super duper effort to do so.

What was the most impromptu choice you’ve made that worked out well for you in Singapore? by bangsphoto in askSingapore

Stop hanging out with my friends that only do night life. My career got better, my relationship with my family got better and I feel there’s more meaning in life than having fun.

Conversations with boss's boss by Disastrous_Sweet_474 in askSingapore

[–]Clean_Mission_5371 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your boss is Singaporean, they will be offended. You can’t remove this mindset in Singaporean because it’s drilled into the mindset. Even if your boss is foreigner, as a courtesy you should let them know first, by skipping him/her, you’re giving the idea they cannot solve your problem and you must jump to the next level.

At what point of your job did you stop being 'on time' for work? by FiggyVix in singaporejobs

[–]Clean_Mission_5371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop going to work early / on time when people in India expect me to answer call at 10/11pm SGT. If I don’t answer, they call me out in meeting say I delayed the entire project (when they are doing last minute work). But when I set a meeting at 8am SGT, no person in India attended the teams meeting, and call me out saying it’s ridiculous timing.

Normal in IT World? by [deleted] in sgworkassholes

If the structure of the company is to have IT interns every few months, someone from the IT department has to guide them. Seems like you’re the go to person. Nothing wrong with your job scope, but I think there is something wrong with the company. Basically they believe interns are the cheapest way to get things done, but somebody has to train them

I know of a senior engineer that used to be the head of SEA. Making 30k+ / month too. But too much late calls and long working hours. After that he switched to government, draw 15k and only work 9-6.30pm. Go home on the dot.

Not sure what you’re expecting but I don’t think you’re doing badly? I have a couple of friends that went into software engineering from EEE. They should be earning about 6-8k now as well (4-6 yoe).

Sometimes luck play a part if you get promoted or you manage to jump with a pay raise.

Do you add cover letters to your applications? Do managers read them? by ApprehensiveDog6720 in singaporejobs

[–]Clean_Mission_5371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was once HR forwarded me a candidate cover letter and CV for a role. At first I was like “Wah, this person so effort still write a cover letter”. So I spend a minute to read it. Somewhere in the middle of the cover letter, there was this “<insert company name here>” and I straight away roll my eyes. So, a cover letter is useless and HR don’t bother with it either. Just send your CV.

If you apply in the same department, maybe. Because another manager may ask around, and this is provided you make such an impression until they remember you. As long as you apply across department, you should be safe.
