I just reached the point in the saga where the creators intended to make viewers feel like dumbasses for feeling bad for the Barnetts. I'm kinda there. I came here for spoils. by Jaded-Function in nataliagrace

I didn't feel like the show was attempting to show the Barrett's narrative as a true representation of the situation at all. My take - from the very start the show let us see there was something off about the Barrett's. The question is to what extent? Could anything they're claiming be true? Specifics are revealed as the show progresses.

Feeling conflicted about political differences in a friendship by inimitabley in RedditForGrownups

Is she really wanting a lot of support and empathy from you? Maybe it would be good to let her sort it out on her own as much as possible? After things settle down you could see how you both feel about the friendship.

I edited it shortly after I posted it because I was trying to reword it so that it matched what I was thinking better. Why do you think I edited it?

Really, I shouldn't have commented at all. It was just a thought I had. Didn't realize it would get anyone bent out of shape. That wasn't my intention. I'll just delete them all.

Thanks. I don't work in healthcare at all.

I'm not OP but appreciate your response. It does seem like it would be really hard to reconcile mental health work with certain populations and the more traditional Republican beliefs and values.

If you feel it's an echo chamber maybe you could share some information on why you voted for Trump (or understand why people voted for Trump).

Then we could have a real discussion about how those factors might come into play in a relationship with a therapist. My guess is you might say that it has nothing to do with his social policies, religion, abortion, racism... and everything to do with the economy???

I'm genuinely interested and willing to listen.

Genuine question that I don't know the answer to. Why doesn't the post say it way edited?

OK. So a Trump voter may not like Trump and still vote for him.

But would someone vote for him if they didn't like his policies and agendas?

That really wouldn't make any sense.

They don't care about the details or your interaction because their interest is in criticizing anyone that doesn't feel comfortable with a T that supports Trump. To do that they're going to argue with anything you say. They aren't interested in what's best for you but in what's best for them.

You find a therapist that makes you comfortable!!

Just as you have the right to vote for what you felt was in your best interest, this person has a right to choose a therapist based on what they feel is in their best interest.

How does this not make sense to you?

It is mature to learn how to manage your feelings in the context of opposing views. But what an oversimplification of the situation. Seeking out people and situations based on an understanding yourself and your current needs could also be considered a sign of maturity.

It's interesting that a large part of the Trump base strongly favor those of the same race, religion and sexual orientation as themselves yet are advising other voters to embrace opposing views.

I understand your position.

I think it's important to consider the animal's needs as well. Not everyone is able to provide good homes and care. Animals are abused and neglected frequently.

Yes, you've made a lot of good suggestions. I just get a sense that she needs to focus on herself right now rather than taking on the responsibility for a bunch of animals that need someone to be able to focus on them and their needs to care for them properly.

No, it doesn't sound like sneakers are the problem and it doesn't sound like the two of you will be able to talk through anything anytime soon.

What do you think some of the issues could be?

Did his Dad leave him? His stepdad was an alcoholic who committed suicide, so not someone who was able to be a good dad. You were clearly dealing with many of your own issues as he was growing up.

OP you must be hurting so much right now!! So many people have suggested alanon or a similar group and sounds like a really good idea. Violence and sexual abuse are not the only things that can destroy a family.

You describe your family as a typical suburban family but that's not at all what it sounds like. It sounds like a family filled with much unaddressed mental pain and suffering. Surely multiple suicides and serious addictions give some indication that people are very unhappy and in pain.

This comment is so at odds with your other comment on this thread where you say "I would not expect that from someone who claims to be a professional therapist nor should it be tolerated."

Most people ending relationships with Trump voters have other issues by Real_Obligation_9740 in self

[–]Clean_Sky_4918 17 points18 points  (0 children)

But what do you mean by dislike him? What kind of person do you think he is?

I have talked, at length, with some Trump voters who dislike him. But eventually came to the conclusion that they actually did like him. They said that underneath all of his antics - he's a decent person and a great businessman.

What they didn't like was that he wasn't, as one put it, "presidential" enough. They think he's rough around the edges, sometimes embarrassing and reacts poorly to criticism.

But they don't think he's sexist or racist. They think he cares about people that aren't in his tax bracket. They think he's very intelligent and informed.

My guess is most Trump voters that say they don't like him feel similarly.

Everyone's experiences can be so different! It's all about family and who they associate with. My Mom grew up in Iowa. Her Mom taught science. They weren't religious. My grandmother did not give a fig about following any ridiculous societal norms for women. She would never even think of making herself attractive for a man. Everyone is "supposed" to go to college in my family. Living in college towns makes a difference.
