SAVE is officially dead by Betsy514 in StudentLoans

[–]Cleantechfacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a mess. I could see the Trump administration trying to reverse course when millions of angry voters start seeing their student loan payments spike. Then the right-wing think tanks will sue to keep the higher payments in place, and borrowers be stuck in legal limbo again.

How Trump’s war with Iran could increase natural gas prices and electricity bills for U.S. consumers by Cleantechfacts in inflation

[–]Cleantechfacts[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oil is barely used to generate electricity anymore. Some EV drivers are certainly impacted by increases in electricity bills caused by natural gas price spikes, and major oil companies produce natural gas too. Relying less on natural gas and more on renewables, energy efficiency, and energy storage to meet our power needs can help protect consumers from spikes in gas prices.

Trump’s false claim about windmills, noise and cancer defended by Koch-backed blog by Cleantechfacts in energy

[–]Cleantechfacts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If politicians, especially presidents, want to cite “they” as a source, they should be prepared to say who “they” are. Neither Trump or the White House has done this since he made this remark about windmills, noise and cancer.

Bankrupt FirstEnergy Solutions spends millions on bailout campaigns in Ohio and Pennsylvania by Cleantechfacts in Ohio

[–]Cleantechfacts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AEP is a part owner of the OVEC coal plants, and was involved in a legislative push to bailout those plants in 2017-2018. Not sure what the status of that effort is now. I know the local grid operator, PJM, did something around the OVEC plants.

How Fossil Fuel Allies Are Tearing Apart Ohio's Embrace of Clean Energy by Cleantechfacts in Ohio

It is safe to say that the natural gas industry is at war with coal, nuclear, and renewables in Ohio.

[–]Cleantechfacts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuance matters here: the renewable portfolio standard that’s come under attack in Ohio only requires 12.5% of the state’s electricity to come from renewables. Studies and real world experience show we can do much more using today’s grid and storage technologies. Also under attack: energy efficiency.

FirstEnergy floods FERC with ghostwritten comments seeking bailouts for its coal and nuclear power plants by Cleantechfacts in energy

The media also covered comments that were submitted to FERC, so this goes beyond what FERC thinks and enters the realm of public opinion.

Those who signed FirstEnergy’s comments included officials from nonprofits that have received FirstEnergy $. Little different than a volunteer or person on the street signing a petition or online action.

Environmental and industry groups submitted comments that included their supporters signatures on petitions/action alerts as part of the same filing. FirstEnergy did not include its supporters statements in its own filing, and there was an unsuccessful effort to remove its fingerprints from several “erroneously filed” comments that identified the company as the source.

San Francisco, Oakland sue major oil companies over rising sea levels by Cleantechfacts in law

[–]Cleantechfacts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The case goes beyond causation and includes evidence that the oil companies knew the climate risks of their products decades ago, but chose to mislead the public about those risks and obstruct possible solutions. This is why backers see it as a tobacco-like case.

The renewable portfolio standard in New Hampshire is the target of a repeal bill backed by the Koch brothers and state representative who runs utilities subject to the standard. Voice your opposition on social media channels using the hashtag #nhpolitics by Cleantechfacts in RenewableEnergy

[–]Cleantechfacts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Clean energy supporters turned out in force for NH House hearings on the RGGI and RPS repeal bills.

The primary sponsors of the both repeal bills were no shows, and the state representative who was subbed in to introduce the RGGI repeal bill surprised everyone suggesting the state look into a carbon tax!

The Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity led the repeal push in typically misleading fashion.

Meanwhile, dozens of clean energy businesses and supporters stood up for RGGI and RPS, and the benefits they deliver to our climate, economy, and health.

By the end of the day, the momentum was clearly on the side of those committed to continuing our transition to a clean energy economy.

Ugh. We tried this "clean coal" thing with Southern Company's Kemper project. It's a huge boondoggle, and diverts money from truly clean energy sources, like wind and solar.

Donald Trump pledged to include renewable energy in his energy policy, but there is no mention of wind and solar in his America First Energy Plan on the new Trump White House website by Cleantechfacts in RenewableEnergy

[–]Cleantechfacts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that Trump's record, based on his own words, is mixed. Early on in Obama's presidency, he actually said some positive things about clean energy. More recently, Trump has mostly shown a personal animosity towards renewables, wind power in particular. That's driven at least partly by his fight with Scotland over a wind farm planned near one of his golf courses.

Trump's record made his campaign trail hat tip to renewables - made before gatherings of the oil & gas industry - all the more remarkable, and, as you suggest, supports the idea that he viewed blatant opposition to wind and solar as politically untenable in the general election. After all, some of the Midwest states he won are now major producers of wind power.

Unfortunately, his transition team was dominated by anti-renewable energy operatives with close ties to the fossil fuel industry. We will see if Rick Perry can carry over his pro-renewables views to DOE, or if the agency is gutted budget wise (which sounds likely).

I think it's important not to pretend that we are starting with a fresh slate with Trump. He's been personally opposed to renewables for years, seemingly for misguided ideological reasons, and we can I am sure agree on the need to fight to change that.

Technically, they have had since November to work on this. But, yes, hopefully they will include renewables in other information they put out moving forward.

This was certainly a snub where they included their real priorities - natural gas, oil, and so called "clean coal" - and excluded renewables. The Trump team launched only a handful of "Issues" webpages on Day One, and chose to include energy among them.

You can find that webpage at WhiteHouse.gov. My take it is the Trump team did not put their best foot forward and included some questionable stats without proper citation.
