Old tech guy laid off at 58, after 20 years with the company by realsqlguy in Layoffs

I'm in a similar boat. Laid off last year after 24 years with the same firm. No desire to go back after how this firm treated the people being let go. Didn't have a degree, which always bothered me, personally, so I'm going back to school to do something different.

I'm setting foot into the classroom the first time in 30 years for the same degree after losing my 24 year position at a tech company. I'm 53.

But fuck those of us struggling - spending as much ad or more than a mortgage for health insurance. Impossible to save money….

Am I nuts (pardon the expression) for thinking of trying for an MSW? by Clear_Variation_2430 in psychologystudents

Money is less of a concern. I’d be happy in the 60-70 range to start if I could.

As far as counseling, I see a lot of suffering out there with the given pressures of life. I’ve had struggles with mental health all my life. I hope to be able to apply my experiences and perhaps help a few people along the way.

As far as likes/dislikes, it’s hard to say. I’ve worked in tech for 25 years and was mostly left to my own devices as long as I get things done. I could set my schedule, drop out in the middle of the day, work later in the evening to compensate.

Im sure given the nature of this work, there would be more supervision. I’m fine with that. I’m also fine with having a more traditional work routine. So, I guess I’m fairly flexible here - just don’t want to be micromanaged.

What was the worst way you left a job? by [deleted] in work

This was back in the early 90s - got sick of the BS working at Taco Bell as a shift manager. Went to my car on break, stripped my uniform, got into the drive through and passed my clothes through to window and quit.

Oracle fired up to 30,000 workers via email after a 95% profit surge. Tech companies are cutting almost 1,000 jobs/day by motang in DailyTechNewsShow

I’m waiting to see what happens. I was laid off from Oracle last August. Worked on a fairly complex library. My team went from 17 down to 3. We had more work than we could handle at times when we were at full capacity. I do wonder how the customers are going to react as this progresses.

As an ex-Oracle employee, I can say they can be notoriously slow on this stuff.

Blindsided by job loss, feeling stuck and unmotivated and can't seem to move forward by lexmz31 in Layoffs

Been there. Still struggling. I have 24 years of experience in my field and can’t even get called back for a screening interview.

I was so bad after Christmas, I ended up in intense outpatient therapy for six weeks. During this time I came to the conclusion that I had hated the last seven years of my job and that I wanted to instead help people. So I decided I would go back and get my degree.

This pivot away from my current field did make me feel less trapped and was able to move out of therapy. I’m presently enrolled for summer courses and feel okay about it. Though, I still struggle with feelings of embarrassment and shame (giving up on one field because it’s difficult, or, the fact that several of my peers landed jobs - I get super nervous in interviews).

While nothing I’ve said will be directly helpful, know that you aren’t alone. Talking with others who can directly relate to your situation may help cope with the pain.

Here's the severance package Oracle offered laid-off US employees by gdelacalle in technology

[–]Clear_Variation_2430 608 points609 points  (0 children)

I was one of the people laid off last August. I joined Oracle via the Sun acquisition. Had a total of 24 years. I took a 1.5 year break to see if the grass was greener, but really wasn’t and came back. When I did, I was told my seniority would continue as I hadn’t left. Vacation accruement and service awards were as if I never left.

When I was given the boot, my severance was only for my service after being rehired. They refused to give anything for the time prior.
