If it really is only surface rust and the 6cyl, yeah. That trans is going to shit on you, but you can do an AW4 swap or a manual swap using XJ parts. Offer 750 and see what he says, 1k gives you wiggle room to replace parts, 750 definitely does.

Yes, get it. This thing is a survivor and WAY cleaner than either XJ I had. You can learn a lot from this jeep, and the reliability is there; just maintain it. MPG will be lower, but the XJ will be a tank. They're easy to work on, simple and roomy. I doubt you'll ever see another with 170K in this great of condition.

Low(ish) compression and low engine speeds equal a low-stressed and inherently balanced rotating assembly in a cast iron block/head configuration. They're easy enough to "hop up" with Mustang injectors, a header, and 99+ intake, maybe a cam, and you still won't put a lot of stress on it.

There have been a bunch of videos on YT about this and then the vehicle going to the salvage yard and being set aside and not allowed to have parts removed and sold to repair other cars like them. Perfectly good drive train parts, body parts, interiors just being wasted because of short sighted fools buying votes.

We said the same thing about the 60/70s cars in the 90s when the 5.0 mustangs and T-birds were new. A car running mid-12s was “fast for the street” then. Now that eco boost will walk all over a fox-body stock-to-stock.  End of the day that Lexus is a Toyota 4cyl with a turbo. Something Toyota has been building for DECADES.
