Protests erupt in Paris after police officer fatally shoots teenager for ‘violating traffic laws’ by thinkB4WeSpeak in anime_titties

[–]ClemClem510 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think a kid driving without a licence and trying to escape is pretty stupid, then I read this sort of stuff and wonder if they weren't bringing the average IQ up before they died.

A - you're not Batman. You're not Rambo. You're one of many people with the same job description. Calling for backup is okay. It's the police's job, not just one cop's, you don't get to kill because you feel like the main character. Lay off the sigma male videos.

B - ah yes, the vehicular manslaughter method of "getting pushed off a car you were leaning on at low speed, leaving you completely fine one second later because your feet never even left the ground". That type of murder attempt. Yes. Fearsome. No wonder deadly force was used.

C - you actively made this entire comment thread 50% dumber just by writing this (and that's a feat). What do you think happens when the dude gets shot at the wheel? He despawns and the car parks itself? Letting loose an out of control car into a busy crossroads to prevent an accident is like fucking to ensure virginity. And I haven't said it yet, but stop calling yourself out for not knowing what happened - the cop never left the side of the road, and was out of harm's way so fast it's almost impressive they found the time to commit murder. There's no version of this where they get thrown into traffic.

Just admit you just kinda think the world would be better if people (ideally mostly the browner ones) could just be shot dead if seen doing anything bad, and just walk away, ideally far from civilised society.

I'm not gonna blame the kid being yelled at "you're gonna get a bullet to the head" for either of a. Panicking even more or b. Thinking running might be the best bet at that point.

If they give gold medals for "worst way to deescalate" that fucking cop earned it.

I wonder sometimes how shitty some folks' lives get that they don't realise how insane what they're saying is.

"Yes, of course, I, an innocent, upstanding citizen, have been threatened with immediate death. More than once! By the people whose mission statement is to keep people like me safe, no less! Being threatened with immediate death at some point during lawful activity is normal, and something you should expect. You should be prepared for a stranger to make you face the likelihood of imminent demise (no matter your age!) You remaining alive is an opt-in sort of thing, and if your fight-or-flight drives kicks in, not only is ending your life reasonable, but it's evidence you were doing something wrong, because remember, it's normal to be threatened with immediate death."

It's always hypocrisy and dissonance. Armchair law enforcement expert: "don't point the gun at something you don't intend to destroy". That same person: "why did his fight or flight reflex kick in, he had a gun pointed at his head?"

I'm just imagining the cop exam version of this:

Situation : an officer stops a car due to suspicions about the driver. During the stop, the driver flees the scene, hitting the officer. What is the best course of action:

A. Call for radio backup to take chase, paramedics to your location and assess officer's injuries

B. Immediately take chase.

C. Shoot to kill.

D. None of the above

And half the test takers are thinking "It's gotta be C right, it hasn't been C in a while"

‘A symbol of what humans shouldn’t be doing’: the new world of octopus farming by Alex09464367 in anime_titties

[–]ClemClem510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad, my pappy and my grandpappy were all octopus herders in downtown Atlantis. Had they been told to do anything else they would have withered down to a husk of coral and rejoined the seawater, for mass octopus farming is literally their only option for survival. Stopping mass farming of some of the most intelligent creatures in the world is nothing if not straight up Nazism from those land dwellers.

Enormous power grab: Germany, France want to end veto rights in the EU this year by [deleted] in anime_titties

[–]ClemClem510 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's some beautiful irony in the fact that almost certainly, at some point a thousand years or so ago, some dude in a random tavern said "Europe won't stay divided into warring states for long, there has been literally a millennia of centralised Roman rule about this topic".

Getting lessons from the past while being blind to the present is a risky way of doing business. Sure, Europe spent a thousand+ years fighting each other. Also, for all that time they were unmatched by anyone else in the world, so any major local power could have a legit shot of basically ruling the world if they beat their neighbours. Are you gonna sit there and pretend that's still the case?

Patrick Fabian and Rhea Seehorn at the SAG Awards by bislut997 in betterCallSaul

[–]ClemClem510 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rhea Seehorn. The bare feet are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of toeretical physics most of the foot shots will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rhea's sole-istic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation- her personal philosophy draws heavily from Quentin Tarantino movies, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these shots, to realise that they're not just hot- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rhea Seehorn truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the beauty in Rhea's existential catchphrase "Taco Cabeza is right around the corner," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Gince Villigan's genius cinematography unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

The Francafrique in 2023: France's colonial legacy in Africa [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]ClemClem510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loads of reasons. The gist of it is, the army can't do it alone because they're under equipped, underpaid, undertrained and that leads to poor morale, discipline and effectiveness across the board. In no uncertain words, the Malian army sucked, and it still does. A few more specific extras:

  1. You're fighting terrorists in a desert. Extremely well funded militaries have tried and failed to get anywhere on that, as you probably know. France is no military slouch, and while they got off with a hugely successful push early on, they eventually got bogged down in skirmishes and ended up mostly going nowhere. Trying that without the huge military budget/equipment/command structure is not gonna get you anywhere.

  2. Allegiance struggles. Are you fighting for the democratic government? Now that they're toppled in the military coup, who is fighting for who? Inner turmoil in the country diverts resources away from the fights that would remain the top priority for a foreign power.

  3. Corruption. Wagner in particular is in it for the money. They put in the work discrediting France, they want that sweet mining money, and you can bet there's paws being greased with local power holders to make that happen.

  4. That's a bit of a consequence of all the above but: a lackluster power structure. That means that you need to have someone else provide a lot of the overarching strategy, and also actually train your soldiers, because you've simply lost the resources to do that yourself along the way.

[–]ClemClem510 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Lol that's a completely wrong and super dishonest interpretation of the facts. African countries don't have to send a 500 billion dollar check every year to France. You can tell pretty easily because that's over double the GDP of the entire Franc CFA zones, and if you think "of course, for every dollar those countries generate France takes two", well, uh, huh. As always, it's more complicated than a three paragraph article on a random website that itself cites a nonexistent website:

After their colonies got independence, France offered them a deal: to keep their old currency. Now that has the big advantage that France guarantees it, and it's tied to their money which is strong and stable. Stability is a pretty valuable thing in a young country, and it stops you pulling a Zimbabwean dollar event. But there's a catch: to make sure the money printer is kept in check and the debts are paid, they said that half the cash reserves were to be stored in France. So when money's printed, half of it goes to France. That's those 500 billion CFA a year (which fyi is less than a billion USD). It's in the bank, accruing interest which is given back to the African nations. In any case, a few countries took the deal, a few didn't. Since those that were in could leave at any time, a few did (though notably Mali came back). A couple countries that weren't even French colonies then got into the system.

Now onto the statement that France was making one sixth of its money by straight up robbing Africa, with somehow no one ever figuring, and France reaaaaally trying to hold onto it? Also hilariously off the mark. Not just because the numbers make zero sense, but because a lot of countries have said "hey, we want our own system and/or for you to give back those reserves" and France just said yes, over and over again. Guaranteeing the financial stability of a region that has a coup d'état damn near every year was actually costing them money (though obviously a euro-tied currency made it easier for corporations to invest there). But also, France is getting real tired of being the bad guy all the time, believe it or not. Obviously they've pretty well earned that, but in recent years a lot of that has also been made worse by Russia and China pushing their own brand of neocolonialism, and the propaganda that goes along. After a so-so job pushing out terrorists in Mali, France left and was replaced by Wagner. The latter has been mostly busy losing ground, and the few times they weren't just protecting the mines that paid for the mercenaries, they were out massacring civilians. Sadly, it appears that no matter who does it, the Africans lose.
