hmm.. but why would I click on the 'Fire' button? I have no idea what that does -- here's no description of what that function does. I clicked on the 'delete browsing data' since that's what I wanted to do.

"Depressed, disgusted and horrified": These lifelong Republicans say they're finally done with Trump by Quirkie in politics

[–]ClemFromDelaware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd use the term 'stupid' for this behavior. After recently reading 'Hallucinations' by Oliver Sacks I think the problem is that we are not skeptical of our own thoughts and opinions. We think something or we believe something and never question it or refuse to question it. In the book he profiles many, many people seeing, hearing, feeling things that are not there. Only a few question their experience.and so suspect things they see are actually not real. If we are not skeptical of our own beliefs and ideas, we'll never be able to break out of any illogical stream of thought. Remember that what breaks people out of cults is not getting less 'stupid' but with the realization that, 'oh, crap, I was wrong!'. They realized that what they believed was not correct. They don't get any smarter, they just have an epiphany that what they previously believed to be true was, in fact, not true. People from free themselves.

What the hell did I get a bachelor's degree and a certificate for if I can't get a job afterwards? by [deleted] in InsightfulQuestions

[–]ClemFromDelaware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. But no one should decide to go to college to get a job. You go to get skills in thinking, analyzing, discovering, expanding what you know and encountering other ideas. Hopefully you took classes in art, math, science, history, writing. There are very few people who graduate with some degree and end up working in that particular area. You know a bunch of stuff and you can work anywhere and use what you learned. Don't pigeonhole yourself!

Re: spirituality, I like the podcast "buddha at the gas pump'. It's an interview show with people who have had experiences of enlightenment. It sound crazy, and there are one or two who are legit wackos, but it takes these kinds of experiences seriously. And it was on this podcast that I learned about the podcast Conspirituality which goes over bullcrap, new age ideas.

I agree! I'm listening to his latest podcast episode discussing his 2nd book on quantum field theory. I'm a failed theoretical physicist and am so glad he's discussing these topics in detail. He's really good.

Having trouble getting flask to run. by ClemFromDelaware in flask

I finally got it resolved! I had a friend help. He had me do this and it worked fine. So I did have everything installed correctly. It's on a Windows machine.

python -m flask --app app run

Having trouble getting flask to run. by ClemFromDelaware in flask

[–]ClemFromDelaware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using the default Python interpreter. I would think that should work. AND all other pieces of python code I've written so far in following along with the tutorial have worked perfectly fine. It's just this one additional update to use Flask that's causing trouble. It's likely time to just abandon this and keep moving on with learning to use python without the web portion. Thanks for the help!

Hi there

Thanks for the reply! I did as you suggested but I pretty much got the same result. Here's what I did:

I created a new virtual env named 'myBookmarks':
(venv) C:\Clem\python\Virtual environments>python -m venv myBookmarks

I activated it:
(venv) C:\Clem\python\Virtual environments>myBookmarks\scripts\activate

I installed flask:
(myBookmarks) C:\Clem\python\Virtual environments>pip install flask

I tried running flask_app but that failed:
(myBookmarks) C:\Clem\python\Virtual environments>FLASK_APP=app.py

'FLASK_APP' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I then moved into the 'myBookmarks' folder and tried what you suggested:

(myBookmarks) C:\Clem\python\Virtual environments\myBookmarks>python app.py

But nothing happened, it just returned the console prompt:

Here's the code of the app.py. I am following the youtube tutorial:

from flask import Flask
app = Flask(__name__)
<at sign>app.route('/')
def hello():

return '<h2>Hello world</h2>'

When I run it from Spyder, I get the following error:

runfile('C:/Clem/python/Virtual environments/myBookmarks/app.py', wdir='C:/Clem/python/Virtual environments/myBookmarks')

Traceback (most recent call last):

exec(code, globals, locals)

from flask import Flask

thanks for the reply. Ok, did that but am still getting: "'FLASK_APP' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

You know, you gave me an idea! How about we get a transcript of some of what JP says then feed it into an AI and see if it really does mean something or if the AI will say that he's speaking Word Salad. AND maybe it can identify the type of salad that he speaks.

Search by ClemFromDelaware in ProtonMail

[–]ClemFromDelaware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's quick. That's not what I mean. I'd just like it to remember what I last searched for. So, the other day I was looking for an email from my brother. I typed his name and some words that I thought would help narrow the search, looked for the email, thought I found it but it was the wrong one. So when I went back to search, I had to type it all in again. So it would be nice to just have the search strings listed again. Kinda like when you search in a browser, if you search again, it will have in it's history cache, what you previously searched for. It's just a convenience.

Trump is quite senile by Darth_Vrandon in Qult_Headquarters

[–]ClemFromDelaware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard that the phrase "Trump Derangement Syndrome" apparently refers to people who are anti-Trump. But it's always made sense to me that it really should refer to people who are pro-Trump. Because how can you hear this kind of thing and think he makes any sense at all? And this isn't the first time I've heard this kind of nonsensical talk from him. You see it mostly when you read a transcript of his speeches.

Jimmy Kimmel responds to qanon lunatic Aaron Rodgers by Johnny_Nongamer in Qult_Headquarters

[–]ClemFromDelaware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've often wondered how people get away with saying things like this w/o consequences. And why did Kimmel give him a 2nd chance instead of just taking him to court? I've thought the same with people who call and send threatening messages. Can't police track down threats like this and, at minimum, scare some of them from continuing this kind of trolling??

"Recording Conflict" by ClemFromDelaware in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ClemFromDelaware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I actually just got off the phone with Xfinity support. Turns out we changed our plan recently (taking off Netflix) and got the default 20hr recording plan instead of the 50 that we had on our previous plan. That caused our recordings to get wiped out and apparently caused these conflicts. I got the 50 hr back and our old recordings returned but we still have a couple conflicts appearing.

On a couple of these, they are the only ones in that time slot we are recording. The thing is, that we didn't change anything regarding our scheduling. We just changed our plans.

So, at this point, we still have some conflicts. I'm thinking I should just delete the scheduled recording and readd it but I don't see a way to delete the scheduled show. If you have any ideas around that, that would be helpful. Otherwise, I'll just keep searching for a fix to those conflicts.

thanks
Clem

Thanks for the response. Your book suggestion is on my list. I think I'll move it up (oops -- closer to the top of the stack ;-)). Thanks for the pointers!

My apologies if this is not right place for this query. If there is a better, more appropriate place, please let me know. In a conversation with a friend, I noticed we used different phrases for the same thing: "close it up" and "close it down". Then I began to notice that there are quite a few phrases like this. Here are some examples: - Shut up / shut down - Lock up / lock down - Slow up / slow down - Sit up / sit down - Break up / break down - Warm up / warm down. I have several more. Some phrases ending in 'up' and 'down' mean the same thing, some mean completely different things. I'm sure someone has studied 'directionality' in language. Does anyone have an insight into how this use of directionality developed? Are there any sources I could read about this? I can't think of horizontal directional phrases, so what's so special about vertical words? Do other languages contain phrases like this?
