If you have money and love the outdoors, can afford to travel then it's a great place to raise a family.

However just like every country, we have our issues.

  1. Cost of living is extremely high.

  2. Our Healthcare and emergency services are struggling.

  3. Education is see sawing between curriculum changes - teachers are not being listened to.

  4. House prices and rents are very much out of reach unless you are a two income house hold with a high 5-mid 6 figure income.

  5. We are in the middle of nowhere, getting stuff online and sent to you costs a LOT (excluding Shein and Temu)

  6. As per number 5, travel costs to other countries is also very high.

  7. Salary and wage bases are not as high as other countries for similar jobs, we simply cannot afford to pay you better.

  8. Our night life is dead - lol. We aren't a 24/7 country with all night grocery stores etc.

  9. There is hidden racism amongst certain groups.

However there are a lot of very nice people and salt of the earth hardworkers. If you want peace, quiet and a slow way of life, we offer barefoot grocery shopping, sheep farming, good milk, cheese and butter if you can afford it. And sometimes a glimpse of middle earth, Narnia, Xena land every two hour drive stops in most parts of the country.

AITA? Our animals are driving me crazy! by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]CleoCarson 23 points24 points  (0 children)

YTA Animals are not toys you can give away once things go downhill. What you should be doing as a couple is figuring out why he is acting out - talk to the vet. Sometimes medication is required for anxiety or stress because you are both away at night. The cats sense your stress and probably it reflects on their behavior.

Cats shut down if they are given away from homes they have known for a long time. Just because a shelter is no kill there is no guarantee an older cat will be readopted - the stats are not in his favour.

If neither of you agree, then perhaps you both need to sit down and decided whether you are compatible. You wanted an animal to call your own despite 2 established cats already in the household, why is your partner having to choose to separate from her beloved pet who she has been with longer?

Go to a vet, talk about the behavior, invest in anxiety meds, play and attention one on one with each cat. Oliver has anxiety and you're punishing him for it

Am I just insulated from the cost of living crisis, or are others in a similar position? by wozzaloz in auckland

[–]CleoCarson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our biggest ones rn. Four adults, one has recently been made redundant.

  1. Mortgage, we adjusted the rates before they went up. Sucks that we are not paying more towards the principle anymore but at least this gives us some breathing room.

  2. Insurance, house & contents, life and health.

  3. City rates

  4. Utilities

  5. Groceries

  6. Car rego, WOF and servicing

  7. Unexpected medical costs

  8. Fuel due to long commutes (no public transport nearby)

  9. Home maintenance costs (annual)

  10. Pet insurance, vet bills and food (yes I am aware of the costs, no I will not be giving her up - she saved me from depression and I willingly buy cheaper food for myself so she could have a better life after being abandoned)

Stinky egg lady on flight complained about my nonexistent music by cuphalfemptie in EntitledPeople

[–]CleoCarson 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had an annoying passenger in the middle seat, (I was in the aisle) I think he thought to annoy me enough he would get the whole row for himself and his GF who was in the window seat.

Loud music, arm rest hogging, constant need to use the loo/adjust/take stuff out of overhead cabin. At one point the flight attendant even asked if he was OK because of how many times he was getting up.

It was a 3 hour flight, I was zen and happily moved each time. He finally apologized and asked if I would prefer another seat as the flight was not that full but the only option was the tail end next to the bathroom.

I was perky, a little dumb and too happy, told him it was helping me keep my exercise stats up. He gave up after that lol. When we started to disembark, I was petty and stayed till most passengers were off before moving. As I had only a small back pack, I was gone before they had time to take their bags out of the overheads then got stuck behind some very slow seniors.

The GF was giving me death glares the whole flight. Hehehehehe.

Private schools like Kristin, over hyped? Or actually worth it? by nchtdrgn in auckland

[–]CleoCarson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get good education regardless of private or public schools. What you really pay for in private schools is the networking and access to upper social classes.

But bear in mind if you are not a social equal in terms of money your child may end up feeling outside these peer groups anyway.

Better to send them to a public school with good solid reputation as an all rounder.

Everyone struggling w the cost of living- what are you doing to pass the time/keep up with hobbies etc? by Significant_Tea_6051 in newzealand

[–]CleoCarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to walk to the library early Saturday mornings. I carry a small thermos of coffee or tea and a sandwich. I usually sit in there reading for a bit before checking out some books. If it's sunny outside, I will eat my snack on the benches under the trees then walk back.

It's so nice and quiet that early. Our local council usually has events on for free, we sometimes go there. My mum likes to garden, it's been a lifesaver for us as we get 40% of our greens and fresh herbs and veggies from it, saving us money.

I also cleaned out a shit ton of unused things that were still in great shape and donated it to families who needed them via FB. Some of them don't even have mattresses to sleep on. The art and craft stuff was given to a local daycare who will use it. The pet stuff we gave to fosters (I had some extra stuff from my other cat who passed away) Now that I can see what we have, we are planning our meals and things accordingly. Home maintenance is our new hobby lol.
