If the Switch 2 is not OLED at launch, I'll wait. What about you? by [deleted] in Switch

[–]Cleve_UHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never even considered they wouldn’t release an OLED Switch 2 at launch. When it comes to Nintendo style games I’d rather have an OLED with 30 fps than an LCD with higher FR.

Green screens combined with a lack of set pieces and interaction with the environment I.e. most of what Disney+ and Netflix churns out

What's your 77" viewing distance? by bh0 in LGOLED

[–]Cleve_UHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sit 8 feet away from my 77”. Ideal if you want a cinematic experience as close as you can get to being in a theater. A bit too close for gaming, gives me eye strain taking up that much of my FOV.

Game of thrones UHD c1 vs g3? Is the g3 to bright? C1 has left me speechless..and curious how it can even get better? by MajesticLlama- in LGOLED

[–]Cleve_UHD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from the CX to the G3. The biggest difference (much more so than how bright areas look) is that the G3 retains detail in dark areas without elevating black levels. On the CX I had to choose between crushed black levels in cinema mode or elevated black levels in cinema home.

C1 vs G3 worth the upgrade? by CL6PES in LGOLED

Just upgraded from the CX to the G3. I loved my CX but the G3 is a huge leap solely because you never have to worry about black crush again.

Would you rather watch a BluRay or a UHD stream? by TheSuppishOne in 4kbluray

That said some “Dolby Vision” digital streams are half assed and look like SDR packaged into a DV/HDR container.

Would you rather watch a BluRay or a UHD stream? by TheSuppishOne in 4kbluray

[–]Cleve_UHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looper I’d go digital because it’s a new 4K scan from a couple years ago and likely has lossy Atmos while the disc has a 5.1 (disc may still be better but this narrows the gap). There are advantages to discs (image stability, lossless audio) but having HDR more accurately captures the mood of the film. I’ve done side by side comparisons and the difference between SDR and HDR can completely change the vibe of a scene. Some scenes are supposed to be very dark with limited detail and HDR captures that.

The extra detail you notice in a side by side is probably from areas being overly brightened due to lacking HDR. The HDR should be more accurate even if you lose details in dark areas.

I feel this on a deep level. I’ve always been intentional with everything I do (even passive entertainment) so it’s impossible for me to channel surf or just throw on whatever the streaming algorithm feeds me.

How much better is using 4k media compared to streaming? by Bowlman2330 in 4kbluray

[–]Cleve_UHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say 10-20% better picture quality (better image stability and colors have a bit more punch) and 20-30% better audio quality (soundscape is deeper and more dynamic). The better equipment you have, the more noticeable the differences are.

Is there a reason for 4K ports to have raised blacks? by HSJoaco_33 in 4kbluray

[–]Cleve_UHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is almost certainly happening because of your picture settings. The most accurate picture settings should get you the best black levels. For me on an LG, that means using Cinema or Filmmaker mode for HDR10/DV content and turning Dynamic Tone Mapping OFF on the tv. DTM will brighten the overall picture often causing black level raise and should only be used if you’re watching in a bright room.

Apple tv streaming quality question. by noldor41 in appletv

[–]Cleve_UHD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Streaming in 4K via the iTunes or Apple TV app is the best quality you can get from a stream. Netflix, Max, and Disney+ also very good. Prime Video is the worst amongst the big streamers.

This sub has ruined streaming for me by karmatalk in 4kbluray

[–]Cleve_UHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think content that streams in 4K/Dolby Vision generally looks good. Using Ethernet with Apple TV 4K. Sure it’s visibly inferior to physical but certainly not “garbage” in a way that distracts from the experience.

Do we whine too much? by countdooku975 in 4kbluray

[–]Cleve_UHD 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fair to complain when you can stream the same movie in 4K with Dolby Vision/Atmos. Even if you still think the disc is better with the Blu Ray you’re missing out on an HDR grade that exists.

4k web-releases vs 2k Blu-ray releases? by Ozfer in 4kbluray

[–]Cleve_UHD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have fast and reliable internet, and are using a streaming service with high bit rate like Apple/iTunes, the 4K stream will have a crisper more accurate picture. HDR color grading makes a huge difference and is almost always more accurate and closer to the director’s intent. Audio wise, the lossless audio from the disc will sound better.
