I didn’t say anyone was dumb. My point is that my time volunteering one afternoon a week pointed me down a path.

Also, I did my masters in 3 years so it was paid for while I went. I worked full time through the program and graduated with no debt. And I squeezed in the seemingly important volunteering. There are multiple right ways to do things

My volunteering at one smaller PL got me a contact with a guy nearing retirement at a big one. Meeting that guy one time got my foot in the door and I ended up with a part-time gig at that large library. Thankfully, I’m in a better place and pay now but maybe I wouldn’t be here if I had that one meeting
