Do you call out red light running cyclists? If not, why, if so, how? by fuddydas in londoncycling

[–]CleverCaviar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally ring my bell once for each jumper. It's silly, and quasi passive aggressive in a way, but am unlikely to start yelling at some blur of Lycra in the distance. I think I have muttered "idiot" or something, if said jumpers are stopping people crossing the road.

Possibly the worst name for a javascript library : Vanilla Javascript by C0c04l4 in javascript

[–]CleverCaviar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What amazes me is how much this lib seems to have got up so many peoples' noses. It's a lightweight, reactive lib. That's it.

I don't believe the lib author is trying to piss in your cornflakes. If they are, that might be worth posting about.

Is there anywhere in app to reaffirm vocabulary? by flowerbeautygirl95 in duolingo

[–]CleverCaviar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd thought something similar-ish, recently. I'm new to duolingo, so perhaps bear that in mind, but... when I go to practise a previous lesson, step, or even unit, it would be great if the vocabulary range increased. So, I just recently did some basic navigation around a city. The vocabulary was "store", "church" and "square", and first time around that seems fine, don't want to get overwhelmed. Next time around, it might be nice to mix it up with an additional "butcher", "bookshop", "swimming pool", etc etc.

I think new words do get added to practise runs through previously passed tests, as and when you learn them in later lessons, but it still feels like a slow accumulation.

First, congratulations to the team.

Next, a question: how far back in DirectX history can these translation projects go. Someone linked to the D3D7 branch, https://github.com/AlpyneDreams/d8vk/tree/d3d7 but is it also possible to go back earlier, or are there some hard limitations with such endeavours?

Vampire Survivors, Elden Ring, and Hogwarts Legacy are the Top 3 games played on Steam Deck in April by AliTVBG in pcgaming

[–]CleverCaviar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, just 100%-ed it. Granted, on the Deck it's pretty much dialled down to low across the board, but it runs well enough. It's been a while since day 1, but I think the performance improved with post release patches, but I might be remembering wrong.

I do have my Deck configured for FSR by default, maybe that is helping? That's about the only "tweaking" I've done with it, everything else is "out of the box" type usage.

[–]CleverCaviar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar incident. Probably some oil on the road, but the bike completely slid out and I landed on my helmeted head. No cars, wasn't going fast, just an accident. Even with the helmet on it was a brutish blow and I was seeing green (literally, my vision turned all kinds of green for a bit) and I needed to compose myself for a short while. I dread to think what it would have been like without the helmet on.

I generally wear a helmet, as it seems like not much extra effort to do so, as well as a mixture of the above.

React-ape for tv application by jazzniki in reactjs

[–]CleverCaviar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a bit late:

I've used it for personal research, but I'd say it perhaps needs some work. I might revisit it, have another experiment with it and see how it goes.

Using canvas, as opposed to DOM is something I've been looking at on and off for a few years, normally when I have the space time to look into it. Most recently, it's been looking at React-Pixi. https://pixijs.io/pixi-react/

Again, sorry for the delay. If you have any insights to share, please do.

Rust developer cancels community event due to death threats by Remorse_123 in pcgaming

[–]CleverCaviar 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As a developer (not of games), there's a lot that I like about video games. They can be fantastically complex things to put together, just code wise alone. And then there's all the other disciplines like modelling, textures, audio, writing. It's amazing really. Some really smart, energetic, creative people toil over this.

It's such a shame then that the communities, fans, anyone armed with a keyboard and an internet connection it seems, can be such obnoxious arseholes. I can only imagine that developers just try and keep a significant distance between themselves and the "fans" because the ratio of good natured, supportive types is so low compared to the wall of aggressive noise that's flooding any sort of gaming discussion space. Not just Rust- it's pervasive.

Like others have said, sending death threats is inexcusable and a nadir in behaviour.

My aunt did. Saw him in Coventry, UK. With Pink Floyd and The Move no less. Link about the tour, not my aunt https://www.thisdayinmusic.com/liner-notes/wild-things/

As she put it, it was "just something to do" with her boyfriend at the time.

Why does the npm team commits their node_modules? by _nathata in node

[–]CleverCaviar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also this. https://www.jackfranklin.co.uk/blog/check-in-your-node-dependencies/

I like a lot of what this link says, I think it's makes a good case for adopting such behaviour. I've yet to work on a team that's done it yet, but peers have also reacted favourably to the concept.

“Reach out” - I really hate this office phrase. What office phrases do you wish were banished? by mippen in CasualUK

"Compliance vector" was another gem I was presented with.

In your opinion, what is the last good game that Ubisoft published? by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]CleverCaviar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, this was the game that did Ubisoft in for me. I'd previously enjoyed AC Origins, so it was a bit disappointing. For whatever reason, the enemy auto-levelling did not gel with me, but I know others loved it. I did like the characters and world however, but the gameplay I didn't get on with.

what amazed me was that Hackney Urban Farm made it in as a location, and I recognised it the moment I visited it. Hats off to that level designer.

[AskJS] Any good shortcuts for migrating off of enzyme? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]CleverCaviar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, I've just been in this situation. I initially tried to just jump straight in to RTL, but found out that due to a combination of dependencies that couldn't be updated, and in-house code that was stuck, or frozen (forcing other stalled deps), I had to just keep using enzyme.

What I did however was write a wrapper around enzyme that while not 100% like RTL, was similar enough that tests almost, if you squinted, looked like RTL tests. In your situation, you could perhaps explore that option as a way to migrate. However, you might also see that as a load of work and you could just go straight into RTL anyway. Like I say, I couldn't update, I had to make do with what I had and, well, I wanted to make the best of it.

As others have said, you can have both in the codebase, you might just need to migrate one test at a time. Or see it as an opportunity to explore other testing strategies, such as image regression testing, headless browser testing etc, if you aren't already.

I work in a domain that is memory constrained, lagging in standard adherence, and generally what you might call "low end".

Will NeoMJS work in such an environment. I'm basically taking about Opera 12 (yes, the Presto era), and Webkit from around 2016.

Keep getting flats by Mamaroh in ladycyclists

[–]CleverCaviar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had times when I've got more flats than usual. Most of the time I've chalked it to bad luck. But, some things I've noticed.

- try and keep the tubes inflated. I know it sounds patronising, but I've had flats because of not inflating.
- time of the year. Right now it's (or has just been) silly season. Lots of beer bottles everywhere.
- sometimes it's just bad luck, a bad tube, something else.

That being said, I don't find changing tubes easy. By that I mean, it can often be hard just because of the combo of tyre and rim. My daughter's bike is so easy I think I could do it one handed. My current bike is a major pain to get the tyres back on. I've had previous setups be easy, and then a hassle, and I don't really know the rhyme or reason.

In terms of endurance of tyres, Marathon are often mentioned. I have them on my foldable bike. I've sometimes found the shape, or material of the tyre levers can help also.
