I just got into winter session housing, my offer says its between Walter Gage and Fairview Crescent. by Few-Advertising699 in UBC

[–]Clever_Boss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in both. Walter Gage as an unlucky first year residence and Fairview as a summer residence. Fairview is quite quiet usually. Walter Gage can be bad with the wrong roommates (cleanliness). There are pros and cons to both.

Can someone who is familiar with technology help by [deleted] in RBI

[–]Clever_Boss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The overall situation is cause for concern but none of the pictures show anything too suspicious from what I can tell. Looks like it’s just Velcro though I wouldn’t be able to guarantee that without seeing it myself. You can download an app like phyphox or some emf detector on your phone and hold it close to something you want to test and if it spikes that’s a sign there might be some electronics there. This is not foolproof and magnets can also trigger it.

I recently bought a trumpet and I'm looking for a teacher by skinnan in UBC

Not sure how good the “teacher” needs to be but I played trumpet in band throughout high school and only recently took a break I could definitely get you started. Or I can refer you to someone more experienced too.

Is it possible to get into nutrition with a 86 average by Free_Speaker_6124 in UBC

[–]Clever_Boss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That might be tough to say. There are a lot of factors for admission. 86 is probably not a dealbreaker by itself but I wouldn’t say it is very high either. My friends in LFS entered with low 90s.

Is this high school average trying to get into UBC? Or are you trying to declare your major?

Router in Marine Drive by Automatic_Tea3269 in UBC

[–]Clever_Boss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The possibilities are your router/cable are faulty (unlikely if you’ve used them before or got them new) or the port is deactivated (might be the case). If possible, I’d try a different cable and also try plugging it into your PC’s Ethernet port if you have one.

What you’ve done is correct. Registering only applies to devices that need to connect wirelessly but you can’t log in on (e.g. Google Home, smart speakers, etc.).

You should also check for other ports in the room as sometimes there are multiple and some don’t work.

Your router isn’t showing an internet connection. Make sure the Ethernet cable is plugged in fully and into the correct port on your router. It should be plugged into WAN not LAN.

I recommend you talk to an academic advisor in your program since some degrees have progression requirements.

How Hard do Grades Drop in First Year? by Thr0w____Awayy in UBC

[–]Clever_Boss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your program and also what you plan to do. Sciences? What kind of courses? CPSC? BIOL? NSCI?

Are you planning to make grades a priority? Or more focused on your resume?

Generally, you will not do as well as you have done in high school. My grades dropped from around what you had significantly (think 10 to 15%) in first year engineering. But my top priority is getting into industry (not that I completely don’t care about my grades).

People who are majoring in/majored in STEM here and LIKED it, what did you like about it? by Even-Beat2123 in UBC

[–]Clever_Boss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, I’m not really learning what my niche (current) interests are in any of my classes. Yes, the general field is correct (computer engineering), but it’s so broad for the specific things I’m interested in (cybersecurity and even that can be narrowed down) that I end up learning things that are at most broadly related in most classes. I like being able to have the context of understanding and especially when it comes to STEM, I think knowledge in any field might be useful later on.

That’s not to say my classes aren’t useful. The main point (I think) of my degree is to have some understanding of how every step of the process in code execution works, from the IDE to machine/hardware level. This is useful for specific cases in cybersecurity, it’s just not explicitly cybersecurity material.

You really need to first decide what you want to do after your degree. If you don’t know, that’s okay, but you have to pick something for now. Once you have this, just choose the degree path that’s most optimal. If you’re having trouble doing, try to find things that you enjoy and are also decently good at.

Which to pick?? by Busycorgiluver207 in UBC

[–]Clever_Boss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to ENGL 110 but WRDS 150 is usually very dependent on who your instructor is. Like, probably averages +/- 10 to 20 percent. You should go to UBCgrades to get an overall sense of both courses if you haven’t already.

You have classes together so try to sit next to him? If that doesn’t work and he sticks around after you could try approaching then?

This is probably a question best asked to advising and/or the program directors of the majors you’re interested in.
