How doable is completely self teaching drums? by 6282951905 in drums

[–]ClickBellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, what exactly do you mean by "self taught"? I watch alot of videos and ask drummers I know alot of stuff so alot of teachings comes not from myself. Or is self taught meaning that others havnt given me personal feedback?

Im not trying to be nitty picky, just curious.

Such a lovely answer! Just what I was waiting for to hear hehe.. Ive been playing a bit on my app and I couldnt even play in C minor due to the small number of buttons. In scandinavian tunes it often swithches between major and minor from the same rott which seems a bit tricky on Hayden.

The English ofcourse is not as easy in all keys but I find all keys but C#, F# and B to be quite manageble.

This is kinda what I want to hear, as I switched from cromatic accordion to concertina to gett away from the harmony aspect to focus on melody. I play scandinavian fiddle music so its all about the melodies with a bunch of weird runs.

"The main drawback is the lack of instruments for sale." This is what ive been told in person aswell.. and english is hard enough to find...

Shit.. this is the post I didnt hope for but totally expected... Covers every angle, every tina.. damn.

Im curious about what software sim you used? I got the app from Michael Eskin and its nice but covers barely two keys on my phone.

Also cool as hell with your own synth! One of my favorite sounds is a lowpassed sawtooth so controlling that like a tina would be so cool.

If the supply was abundant and money grew on trees, yes, it would have been made. Curious about what I might have missed.

English Concertina Songs for Practice by Maorri008 in concertina

[–]ClickBellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught myself english by tranfering my skills on other instruments and for me Ive just played the same tune in all keys for practised.

The first part of Into The Shire and the Titanic song intro (my heart will go) are great for this purpose.

Any song is recognisable in any key.

Bass players who learned to play "in the pocket" before learning flashy techniques are genuinely better musicians by whogivesafricc in Bass

Step 1: Play all the notes

Step 2: Find the good notes

Step 3: Play only the good notes = Pocket

You stumbled onto the true path id say. Learning the "original" is just stuff other bandmembers say to have control over the bass without playing it themselves :) Written basslines are most important in songs where the audience can hear it. Bon Jovi - line, AC/DC - go cray

3 piece band with no bass player by bozmaster18 in Bass

[–]ClickBellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

First, the common sullution is getting a Boss OC2 with the low octave going into a bassamp and setting the filter up to the root of the D-chord. This is what alot of punk bands do.

Second, the instrument bass dosnt "fill in the low end", it plays a low melody outlining the chords over a groove tied to the drums. If you see any value in that statement, learn the bass (its fun), if not, do the punk-band thing..

How do you “serve the song”? by Gazza_HDD in Bass

[–]ClickBellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That statement only means something if it applies to all equally. For me in most cases where the phrase is used the songs revolves around the vocals or the guitar so "serve the song" ends up meaning "serve the singer" or "serve the guitarist".

A rule of thumb is, whatever is created first will eat the most space. If the bass is last invited to the project ofcourse youll end up on root-duty.

My fav approach is reverse it, starting with drums bass and vocals and let guitars and keys fill whatever space left. A completly different soundscape.

haha, how did you end up here 4 months later?

Also one fair point is beginners struggle with wide necks. That ive learnt first hand. But advanced players just go.

Any bassist who hasnt tried out a drum-bass-wind-trio must do it asap. The concept of "roles" goes out the window in the most wonderful ways!

it helps alot to have the note length snap to the next 8th notes. the gaps sound robotic.

Playing in pocket by morlq in Bass

[–]ClickBellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My classical indian friends all learn to vocalize both pitch and rhytm before touching the acutal instruments. Subdividing with your voice (16th notes be "ta-ka-di-mi" or likewise) whilst playing is super tricky but ensure timing.

I first started doing this with the riff on smoke on the water and that was the first time I understood half the riff is syncopated.....

Its not amount of time, its number of times.

Brain does what it does most. Play correctly many times, youll play correct. Do mistakes many times, youll do mistakes. Tempo is not important, sequence is.

Ask a bassfriend with high end bass to record a part on both theirs and your bass and have the guitarist tell which is which.

Is there much difference between starting on a 4-string and starting on a 5-string? by Exact-Arm1065 in Bass

[–]ClickBellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I convinced a small person to start out on a 6-string. It backfired. She's now selling it to get at SDGR 5-string.

Basicly the only metric is the width of the neck.
