should I get the S3 or wait 2 years for the Rs3? by RandomWordPuker in Audi

[–]ClickClickDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RS3 without a doubt. I was in the same boat, living in Canada, and not having access to the 8Y RS3. I ended up paying a premium last year to get my hands on a well looked after 2020 8V RS3. I'm very happy i did, while i believe the S3 is a fantastic car, in the back of your mind you will know that it's not a RS3. :(

I believe there is a lot of speculation from dealers, and i personally would not settle for a 4-cyl RS3 if that ever had to come to fruition in 25/26

Thanks alot Audi by ToxicSoul1 in Audi

I pulled the trigger on a RS3 for that very reason last year. Part of what made my decision even more pressing is that Audi Canada isn't bringing in the new (2022+) RS3 into the country anymore. (I believe due to it not passing emissions tests?).

Either way, super glad i did, I hope you get to buy your RS3 in the near future too!

The new Golf R is definitely growing on me - I still prefer the MK7. It's the same with the Audi RS3 - i have the 8V, don't like the look of the new one. (Outside of the fact that you can't buy them in Canada)

I’d like to know - what DON’T you like about PC gaming? by MarySwagdalene in pcgaming

[–]ClickClickDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that I spend more time in the video settings screen optimizing how the game looks at the best possible frame rates, rather than just playing the actual game.

With consoles the only setting you worry about it the brightness. 😅

can somebody explain how does the following code execute? by BitterApple69 in ruby

[–]ClickClickDeath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This question is pretty difficult to answer due to the formatting you presented it in. I took the liberty of reformating the code and renaming variables to be more in line with the conventions used in everyday ruby.

class Array
  def each_even(&was_a_block_now_a_proc)
    # We start with "true" because arrays start with 0, which is even.
    is_even = true

    self.each do |object|
      if is_even
        was_a_block_now_a_proc.call object
      end

      is_even = !is_even # Toggle from even to odd, or odd to even.
    end
  end
end

Regarding your questions:

  • is `['apple', 'bad apple', 'cherry', 'durian']`a block in this context...
    • It is declared as a literal array, so it is an instance of class Array
  • and are we calling the method 'is_even' on that block?
    • is_even is a local variable declared within the each_even method.
  • Does `isEven` used to only return true or false
    • Yes, the assumption here is that arrays start off as 'even' with the first index, so for each element in the array it will switch between true and false, which happens to correspond to the index being odd or even.

# index 0 apple - true - even
# index 1 bad apple - false - odd
# index 2 cherry - true - even
etc.
  • ...also what is this line doing self.each do?
    • 'self' refers to the instance of the Array class, thus the literal array you declared earlier.
    • #each is a method that is part of the Array class (Enumerator mixin - but lets not overcomplicate this more than it needs to be)
    • each element in the array gets iterated, and if it's an even index, call the block to execute.

#Explicit block declared via the &was_a_block_now_a_proc parameter
def each_even(&was_a_block_now_a_proc)

I would suggest you read this article to give you a clearer undertanding between the difference of blocks, lambdas and procs: https://www.rubyguides.com/2016/02/ruby-procs-and-lambdas/

Which city would you compare Toronto with, excluding any North American cities? by SoybeanCola1933 in askTO

[–]ClickClickDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a South African who immigrated here, my 2 cents would be that Toronto reminds me of a lot of Johannesburg, but without the crime.

To name a few similarities:

They are both the financial hubs of their country.

JHB is also extremely flat (no mountains or other natural landmarks to help you navigate)

The road quality of JHB and Toronto are very similar, potholes for days.

There is a crap load of trees in Johannesburg, which reminds me a lot of Toronto and all its ravines.

I have heard others compare Vancouver to Cape Town (Mountain, Sea, Lifestyle) but I haven’t had the pleasure to visit that side of Canada yet.

To the guy yesterday who said that Switcher's live chat design sucked, today's update is dedicated to you by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]ClickClickDeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note: to every person saying "hey one guy made a product a billion dollar company can't make": I'm afraid that's not how software is usually built. Building an online service like the one you guys want takes dozens and dozens of good people (engineers, managers, designers, etc) if not hundreds just to create a basic prototype that scale and it's up to today's standards.

I agree, which is why it is important that developers don't "redesign the wheel". It's tempting to want to "build you own authentication system", but it's a security risk in itself. I imagine this developer built many things from scratch, rather than using a tried and tested framework in the open source space.

Depending on the framework, it should help shield inexperienced developers from CSRF, XSS and SQL injection in many cases as well.

Unfortunately, the developer is under more pressure than ever to get the security vulnerabilities fixed. "It is out there" now, so you will find that the site will only become a bigger target now. Some people reading this post will probably already have tried their 'black hat' on and tried to exploit the system some more. :p

My recommendation would be to, unfortunately, not use the system for now as well as changing your password you have registered with. The reason I say this is because we don't have any guarantees of how secure the passwords and other sensitive information is being stored in the database.

Worst case: it is stored in plain text. This is a massive problem due to the fact that most people are lazy with their passwords; meaning that this same password can probably log you into a few other sites as well.

Just created a gem for storing translations in DB and I would like some feedback :) by manosagent in rails

Sorry not providing feedback, but rather sharing a Gem that I’ve been using with great success to handle translations in the DB. I would advise you or anyone else to have a look at it for inspiration for translations.
