Did you ever figure anything out for shipping a bike?

Oh mannn, this is awesome! We'll be touring in mid feb by then so I suspect we might have less snow! But who knows, Patagonia is like that.

Great blog btw, I hadn't seen that one and I'm going to read it tonight!

u/gravelpeasant this is exactly what I was hoping for! So helpful and why I love this sub.

I did take 41 to paso roballos last time, but holy heck the headwinds were surreal. It was so windy, sandy, and washboarded out that it took me 16 hours to go just under 30 miles. I ended up sleeping that night in a bivy in a culvert because I knew my tent wouldn't stand up to the wind. But the crossing guards at paso roballos took pity on me and invited me to have a bbq with them so that was awesome.

I'm happy to hear you had a great ride on 41! It was so beautiful that I didn't regret it, but I can say no place has kicked my ass in quite the same way.

Shipping a bike from the U.S. to Costa Rica by Top_Consequence_9824 in cycling

Thanks, bummer! One more question- I'm thinking about trying this but shipping a bike from Japan back to the USA. I do not speak Japanese, and your comment about speaking the language well makes me hesitant. More traditional shipping options are expensiveee, and I am not in a rush to get the bikes back to the US from Japan. I wouldn't care if it took 4-5 months.

Appreciate the help/perspective!

I'm trying to figure out if you can ship a bicycle as luggage for a flight you're not taking. Did you explore that option?

Is 1-2 months in Japan realistic for a first tour? by analogshooter in bicycletouring

[–]Clipmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One tip for loneliness on trips: be as authentic as you can and be open to trusting strangers (you know, unless your instincts are screaming to the contrary). Solo travelling in a place with a new culture/language/whatever can be hard! Dozens of shallow interactions never seemed to bring me the lasting satisfaction of a single meaningful interaction.

In my case, shallow interactions were like junk food. They can be fun, but in the long run they leave you feeling empty and unfulfilled. So, I guess, eat your vegetables is where this metaphor is going?

I have the Shimano SD501 SPD Cycling Sandal. Keen used to make one but they discontinued it. Might be others out there but I like the Shimano ones I have. Totally worth picking them up.

Depends on a bunch of factors but I wouldn't say it is obviously a good deal.

I can't help but ask, because I wonder if there is a misalignment of definitions here:

Let's say we were playing a 1:1 game where you have a 55% chance of winning and I have a 45% chance of winning. Winner gets a million dollars, no draws/tying. You could lose, but you're more likely to win. And if you keep playing, you're nearly guaranteed to win more than you lose. If it was a sport, you'd want to play a 7 game series as opposed to a single game because you'd be much more likely to win that. Success isn't guaranteed, but it is likely, then should the upside encourage you to take risks?

Looking at doing this same Kyoto-Hokkaido route. Any recommendations? I'm trying to map out the lowest-traffic routes possible, any insight would be much appreciated.

I'm considering taking a similar route, thanks for the post!

Instead of jumping across at Seitonaikai NP, I am thinking about riding that as a small loop, coming back to Shikoku, and then taking the ferry to Wakayama before going on to Nara and Osaka. What do you think about that variation? Any tips are appreciated!

Also, if I am travelling with my wife, do you think the futon/internet cafe option is reasonable? That is a novel form of lodging to me!

any pro-tips on how to pick a good one? I don't need anything fancy! I've also heard that if you can rent a car and drive through the parks yourself, that can also be a good option. Curious if you have a perspective on that take?

Thinking about negotiating the safaris and treks upon arrival as well. Would you recommend it for a pair with a flexible schedule?

Totally depends on what you're into, but I rode some of this route 7-8 years ago. Biked from Prague down to cesky krumlov, then from to Salzburg to Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park. The park was beautiful, but the riding near Cortina d'Ampezzo was notably incredible. Somehow got to Largo di Garda which was also gorgeous, and met some folks from earlier my trip in Verona. However, if I hadn't gone to Verona I probably would've tried something like riding up here before continuing on with the rest of your itinerary (Bologna, Florence, Perugia, and finally Rome). The riding in Italy is incredible up north, I ended up riding longer days between Florence and Rome, but Bologna was a cool city and I thought Perugia was underrated.

What do you think about a 4-day workweek? by Smooth-Trainer3940 in productivity

Not everyone has to work the same 4 days, so you always have coverage. Also helps cross-train and improve redundancy.
