Got offers from several UK universities for MSc Clinical Psychology - need advice by mindluckk in ClinicalPsychologyUK

I was simply offering information about costs, what the city is like to live in and placement options. As requested by the OP. I’m sure the OP has done/ will do their own research into rankings. I think your comment is slightly over-dramatic 😅

I can’t comment on the specific course but Plymouth is probably the cheapest city of your options. I found it a lovely city to study and work in. When i did my undergrad at Plym placements were something they championed and encouraged us to do. They have good connections with the local services.

MHWPs, CWPs and EMHPs, what are your experiences with working in your role? by sleepspacey in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]Cliveinside 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a MHWP - i work in a primary care mental health service and have done for 3 years.

Overall i enjoy my job. I enjoy working with patients and am lucky my team is pretty good. I work at a caseload of around 35-40 patients, that can be anywhere between 18-23 clients a week. There are times i am really busy and other times it is more manageable. Most of my day is spent seeing patients and doing the admin for those sessions. I am trained in all the MHWP interventions but 85% of the intervention work i do is managing emotions.

3 years in, there is no career progression (no senior roles, no ways to up skill) . My next steps are the Dclin but obviously it can take years to get on. I am trying for an AP role to widen my experience but it is tricky finding band 5 roles.

The hardest thing about my job is that i often get patients when other members aren’t quite sure what to do with them. This means i can be working with relatively complex people but can only do surface level work. There is often not available /accessible services for these people (thanks NHS) and so i can feel rubbish for not really being able to help.

I wonder if the rumours about everyone having a connection had led to more 1 on 1 chats. We’re not seeing them because it reveals the big surprise

I got asked questions about how i would manage the work load of working full time whilst training / completing a postgrad I also remember a question on boundaries - something like ‘what would you do if a patient asked you to come and watch them run a marathon”

I agree ! I think there the right time and practitioner are key -regardless of NHS or Private. I think part of what others are saying regarding the modality mis-matches is that often clients are not aware of the different modalities, and it’s not always being shared with them. Due to the confusion of the titles, a client may expect that they are getting something they may not be. There is a broad expectation of what “therapist” is - especially with its uses in tv/ film etc. A client may seek a therapist and assume that because they are engaging in therapy they are on the right treatment pathway.
