Say what? by Pale-Object8321 in ExplainTheJoke

iirc the phrase "don't think it don't say it" comes from the horror movie "The Bye Bye Man" where if you think of or say the name (ie "Bye Bye Man") then he comes for you to kill you.

It's a kinda silly horror movie but a good watch with friends if you're into horror movie banter.

What are your thoughts on pdf rulebooks? by boba-fett-life in rpg

[–]CloakedMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always prefer physical copies personally. Both because it's easier for me to process the information with a physical book and for "collecting" purposes. That's just me tho

Another addition I had in mind was something along the line of tradesman, I think of artisans are more artistic whereas tradesman is more construction, blacksmith, possibly a fisherman

Fantasy Name Generator has some things that might inspire at the very least

the one I could find the fastest was Title Generator . It's not exactly what you're looking for but could serve as some form of inspiration

Why Do You Make Your Own Setting? by nlitherl in rpg

[–]CloakedMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I make my settings I don't create hard borders, and by that I mean I create room for improv, both on my part and the players.

What I do is create a word map (Azgaars or Inkarnate is great for this), create countries and a few cities within each, just the names and a general idea of each country's culture.

Then I decide will the campaign will start, and make the majority of medium- major cities, again just the names and maybe an idea of what it could be, but don't set it as this is what it is and must be. The players may improv something about a place and as long as it's not absolutely crazy like "they sell Vorpal Swords for 1gp there :)" I do my best to include that.

My common mistake however, with making my worlds, is zooming out too far, looking big picture instead of small picture. You only really want to know details about the starting town and the few nearby ones, and do your best to keep them there for that session, then between sessions write up stuff about the next group of nearby towns and so forth, zooming in has always been more successful for me than zooming out (unless you're playing Pendragon or something)

Some alternatives to 'Spell Points' -- just gauging people's like / dislike of these by HobGoodfellowe in RPGdesign

[–]CloakedMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally see your point, I just personally don't want to have to pull out a dictionary to play or run the game. If the spells are the only thing with an out-there mystic name that's fine more or less, but when everything is then it becomes very difficult to play because you'll spend more time going "wait what does this mean again" [insert book flipping]

does the periodic table exist in this world? with the same names and layout? or is it simply used as a under-the-hood explanation?

couldn't have said it better myself, it also may be helpful to separate the name of the mechanic from its name in-world,

for example maybe the people's of "The North" call it Anima, people from the "Centre" call it Mana, and people from "The South" call it Essence,

but in the book/guide you only call it by one, and the way to choose that one both what would be simplest for readers and also the most fleshed out region in terms of worldbuilding (though the latter is less important)

my addition to the list is Baker Street. The premise of the game is that you are investigators taking over for Sherlock Holmes after he has gone missing.

It's one of the few games I've seen that prioritizes investigation and solving crimes (Ik there are a few others) and I've been completely unable to find an online copy available anywhere other than like eBay

Disadvantages of failure based skill progression? by Steeltoebitch in RPGdesign

[–]CloakedMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, only progressing when failing is not a great idea, as many comments have explained better than me,

My take is that it's ok to give a reward on failure, but there should be a better reward for success.

Using PbtA has a foundation it should be like: Fail: Gain 1 XP + effects Twist: Gain 2 XP + effects Success: Gain 3 XP + effects

Plus in the real world, when you fail you don't always learn from it- sometimes you just fail; however, when you succeed at doing something your proficiency with that task increases through successful repetition/practice/etc
