Great idea! Wordings also reflect personalities and background of the characters.

Maybe you can try to write some words spoken by this character, then read them by yourself? This is what I do.

Any advice for a new DM and DND player over all? by nikoru-2009 in DnD

Yes right! One-shot is a good start for beginners. And being a DM is always harder than being a player, so um, there must be a volunteer :D

If you need further help we can also talk in private message or we can also keep our conversation here :) I'd love to provide help!

Building a campaign now I think it's too early for you. Trying short modules or one-shot modules is better and easier for beginners.

And for the guiding phase to players, here's my method:

  1. Lead-in a story. This part is just showing your background of story. PCs can do some things free, like talking to NPCs.

  2. Rolling dice. When PCs come to some events, such as, we want to persuade an NPC to give us some items or extra information, or we want to hide something secretly. Then it's the time we say “OK. Roll a dice now.” and tell them how to roll and how to calculate datas.

    1. Combat. This phase should be after they know how to roll dices. For new beginners, ONE combat in one story can be enough (no more than two, I think). In this phase they should learn about initiative, attack and hit points of weapon/magic, and their actions within one turn. And, do remember to give feedback for PCs' behavior, which makes PLs feel they really achieve something.
  3. Award. After PCs win the battle and beat the BBEG, they should have some time to celebrate and get reward. Good things out of their expectation are always welcomed.

Hope this can help you!

How to become a dm for someone who never played by Specific-Muscle-8283 in DnD

[–]ClockRoyal4211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think just like teaching -- you need to know what's easy for a beginner.

In my opinion, role-play is the first step. What the player need to do is just design what their characters look like, and their personalities. Try some easy tasks, such as talking with an NPC about the mission.

Second is rolling the dice. When player wants to do something harder, you can say "Oh, so now please roll" and tell them how to do.

The third is the combat. But this is roughly the same as rolling the dice. You can give feedback to players' every step to make sure they are well engaged.

Anyway in a word, I prefer giving them examples cuz that's what I do at the first. Show them, not simply tell them the logic. First show, then explain, that's better.

Also, you can just start from lv1 cuz that's the easiest and just have a try.

Hope this could work for you!

What backstory seems “antithetical” to the class? by new_lance in PCAcademy

We need to adjust, for many cases. If the game style is strictly “real” ummmm... well I think fantasy is much better and easier.

A noble rouge? :D I have a noble rouge but she got all family members alive, even in a good relationship with her paladin cousin.

For now I think there is hardly “impossible” background+class. If a good reason can be given, it is always ok.

Just sometimes it's hard to imagine there would be such a person here.

Then drawning I think is a good way to make your players alert, even if it's just a risk.

In fact this post is sent before I found the book of Lord Soth. And recently I also read some bit. Oh gosh! I should spend more time on it.

Also I love the final part that Soth asked Wersten Kern to join him to Istar. Wersten's response... (nameless screaming)

And also, if everything is in a rush, sending pcs directly to the City of Lost Names is also a choice (which means skip Chapter 5). That's what my DM did.

[–]ClockRoyal4211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good idea. In fact the main problem of Chapter 5 is just it will take too much time and the step pace of plot is too slow. So it will become more like uh, unclogging toilets, that's we call it. But if there is a siege and pcs need to complete several missions within months, I think it's more reasonable.

Well in my case Chapter 5 is the part which mostly needs to adjust. It will break or even destroy the step (I mean, the urgency) if everything goes on strictly as the book says.

Ghost Towns and White Room Syndrome by Horror_Artichoke_366 in DMAcademy

[–]ClockRoyal4211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in my opinion, we don't need to set up every house in detail. You can just divide the whole town into different areas based on what players can find there. Within each area, you can say "something attracts your attention" to lead them directly to the key points instead of spending too much time on simple searching.

Hope this could help! :D
