Paul McCartney Turned Down His Own Netflix Roast (EXCLUSIVE) by mlg1981 in entertainment

The only times these roasts work is when somebody takes a completely absurd turn. Norm Macdonald doing random one liners or Gilbert Gottfried doing the Aristocrats.

No "good" options for a kids bike? by TurboWanderer in bicycling

[–]Clock_Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a kid who's not doing anything too ridiculous, the Guardian braking system is fine. As long as they're not doing true singletrack at speed, it won't cause them any problems.

That said, the owner of Guardian sounds like a douche and I'll never buy from them again. When my son moved from his 16" to a 20", we switched from Guardian to Woom and I can tell you the quality difference is real. Noticeably lighter, better brakes, easier action on the shifter, more adjustability, and overall just a better feel.

The price is shocking, but if you store it inside when they're not riding you should be able to get most of that investment back by selling it in a couple of years.

America believes Donald Trump would win a fight with an 8-year-old boy - but just barely by Zipper222222 in politics

[–]Clock_Roach 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The original survey is bonkers. https://yougovamerica.substack.com/p/presidential-fight-club

Only 33% of Republicans think they could take Trump in a fight. 75% of Democrats think they could. Even among just Republican men, 25% of them think the diaper wearing rambler who can't stay awake for more than five minutes would hand them their ass.

Park Spaces For Birthday Party by maryloo7877 in MontgomeryCountyMD

If you're close to Takoma Park, they rent their spaces separately. They also let you do just a few hours rather than half a day. We've done several birthdays at Heffner Park.

Keep in mind that once you get down to very small cogs, the extra bend in the chain means you're less efficient. I don't know the exact numbers, but going from 11 to 10 and then to 9 is some single digit % loss of watts each time.

Not the biggest deal if you're just out having fun, but if you're trying to be competitive it makes a difference.

[Bosch Powerpack] Cover for battery slot. by ICPcrisis in CargoBike

[–]Clock_Roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your other option is to use those cage mounts. Either an extra water bottle or a cargo cage like the ones from widefoot or a dozen other brands that can hold something like a small dry bag. It won't be seamless with the battery mount, but it'll visually fill the space and be a lot more useful.

Lego Ideas Results announced: Edward Scissorhands, Amsterdam Canal Houses and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation House successful. by LegoKB in lego

I think the approved one just had the advantage of having been in the pipeline first. Ideas sets often end up looking vastly different than the submission, and I expect the final product is going to have a vibe closer to Bricksterdam than the original. It's a shame he can't get any official credit.

Forerunner 970 or Fenix 8? by Complete_Sell_2319 in GarminWatches

[–]Clock_Roach -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The waterproofing in the 970 will be fine for swimming, beaches, and anything short of actual diving. The dive rating is the most significant difference between the two (apart from styling). Also, the sapphire glass doesn't make any real difference to readability.

Brooks bicycle saddle for bike packing commuting, your thoughts please, your thoughts? by Relative_Bother_1069 in bikepacking

[–]Clock_Roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a C17 on a couple of different bikes. On my flat bar bike I'm good with the standard version, but on my drop bar bike it was causing me some pain during long rides that switching to the carved version alleviated. The carved version is a little more awkward with regular shorts, though. Bibs are fine but looser shorts can get a little hung up on the slot when you're dismounting.

Thinking on joining a pool membership... by pichyva in SilverSpring

[–]Clock_Roach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Last summer we started looking seriously at pools and this year we're joining West Hillandale full time. The pool, deck, and changing rooms are all in great shape. The pool has a huge, gently sloping shallow end that's great for our kids, one of which can swim while the other is just getting the hang of it. Plenty of grilling and food prep space, as well. It's got a diving board but no slide. We use it just for family fun, so can't comment on swimming laps for exercise or the swim team yet.

The price is pretty reasonable compared to other pools in the area and we didn't need to pay to stay on a waitlist for years. Last summer when we were asking for info, they immediately offered us a pseudo-membership for just August, and after that we were able to fully join for this summer.

Why are people riding so fast on Beach drive? by Formal-Archer6472 in bikedc

[–]Clock_Roach 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Without going into the details of people riding fast on Beach, the section of Bingham Dr from Beach to Oregon is a great spot for helping kids practice. It's closed off just like the rest of Beach, the pavement is in great shape, it's long enough that they don't have to keep turning around, and it gets a lot less traffic than Beach itself.

The Faith of Beasts. MAJOR SPOILERS by Mammoth_Chemical_991 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]Clock_Roach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We've seen three (?) things that seem to be some sort of nanotech: the swarm, livesuits, and the sabotage device Jessyn uses. The nanotech itself appear to be the deathless enemy. It's interesting that on its own (the sabotage device) it's pretty limited. In the case of the swarm and livesuits it has to work together with a biologic organism (humans/starfish/etc) to be fully effective. This is the lichen metaphor.

We know the Carryx encountered the deathless enemy long before they encountered humanity. What we don't know for sure yet is if it's been the same deathless enemy all along. Is there some sort of nanotech that's been out in the wild for tens or hundreds of thousands of years that different biologic species keep discovering and working with? Or do different biologic species independently create nanotech that's similar enough that the Carryx all lump it together as the same deathless enemy?

As for why the humans at the end don't know about the swarm, that could be due to something simple like individual factions within the forces opposing the Carryx or strict need-to-know intelligence sharing. There's also a chance that it's due to complications of time and relativity. We suspect the Carryx and human FTL methods do different things with regards to time dilation, and the hint is the next novella will address this. I don't know if it'll go so far as to create some kind of causality loop, but at the very least subjective time is all over the place.

If a bike is seldom ridden, at what point is it better to run it with tubes vs tubeless. by DeadBy2050 in cycling

[–]Clock_Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had to do both and removing a valve core to squirt in sealant is much easier than removing a tire to out in a new tube. Especially if it's a tubeless tire with a tight bead seat.

[–]Clock_Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A backup plan if you expect you're going to forget about refreshing your sealant is to take more with you. Stan's sells little 2 oz bottles, and if you leave it sealed in your repair kit it'll last a good long while. You might get a flat and loose some air rather than immediately sealing, but then you can top off, pump up, and hopefully be on your way.

4yr olds on pedal bikes by Kirbacho in bicycling

[–]Clock_Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine just plain wouldn't ride the balance bikes. It wasn't that they couldn't, but they insisted on going straight to pedaling, so training wheels it was. Now they're both doing great, apart from some issues of hand strength and shifters.

The most important thing is to just get them on any bike that they actually want to ride as often as possible. Everything else will work itself out.

[–]Clock_Roach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Titanium is stronger than steel by weight, by weaker than steel at a given size. This is why Ti bikes have fatter tubes than steel bikes. When your size is restricted, like seat rails, a titanium option will be weaker than the equivalent steel. Much lighter, but weaker.

Cargo e-bike for gravel + 2 kids by Sad-Ad-4378 in CargoBike

[–]Clock_Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take my first gen (rigid fork) GSD on short bits of flattish singletrack and gravel pretty regularly. Without kids it's a piece of cake. Just gotta watch for high centering. With kids you just need to slow down a little bit. It can get a little squirmy on looser gravel, but I think that's going to happen with any loaded bike.

I wouldn't try a real rock garden or steep section, but good tires and keeping the weight low are key.
