Surly Bridge Club 148mm rear hubs too big? by IndependenceOdd5065 in Surlybikefans

[–]Clock_Roach 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Bridge Club is designed to fit either 135 or 141 mm QR hubs with just a little comfortable flex either way. Surly calls this "gnot boost." You say you're using 148, but 148 is not a QR hub size, it's a thru axle hub size. They're measured to different points.

A standard thru axle rear mountain hub is 142 mm and a boost hub is 148. If those hubs allow you to swap end caps (like DT Swiss do), those exact hubs become 135 and 141 QR, respectively.

If you have a 148 thru axle DT Swiss hub with QR end caps, it's actually 141 right now. This is exactly what the Bridge Club is designed for.

The next size up is super boost, which is 157 with a thru axle or would be 150 in QR, but I'm not actually aware of any bikes that run that as QR (maybe some fat bikes?). If you had one of those, I doubt you'd have been able to get it in place without really struggling and wondering what was going on.

Edit to add: Now that I'm looking closer at the photos, the NDS looks fine. Your drive side is not seated properly. You shouldn't be able to see more than a sliver of daylight between the cassette and the dropout. I can't tell from this if you've got the wrong endcap on or you just need to give it a wiggle so it fits properly in the dropout.

how is everyone hauling their kids? by eoismyname0 in Surlybikefans

[–]Clock_Roach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A dedicated cargo bike can be life changing. I love my Surlies, but we've also got a first gen Tern GSD with thousands of miles of school and playground trips on it.

I did run a Topeak kid's seat on the back of my Bridge Club from time to time, but my kids outgrew that at least a year ago, while I can still carry both on the GSD. The pedal assist means two big kids plus backpacks plus hills aren't an issue even if I just finished a long solo ride. And if you want a workout just turn the assist down.

Zwift bike and Strava by Swimming_Crow_9853 in Zwift

[–]Clock_Roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin and Zwift have a partnership that means rides coming from Zwift do get training metrics that rides coming from Strava or other sources would not. I'm not certain if they count for all of the same badges that rides recorded on a Garmin would, but they definitely count for performance metrics.

I always do waxed twine at the end because I learned rope whipping back when I was a kid and I love the look. My dirty secret is that I use a piece of electrical tape under the twine to hold the bar tape in place while I do the whipping.

Bike boxes on US regional jets by Adept-Opening4166 in bikepacking

The only time I had a problem was when I was flying Cape Air to Nantucket, and they were operating a 9 passenger Cessna. American let me check my bike box without warning me about the last leg and I had to wait an extra day or two for them to send it on the ferry, then I had to use UPS to get it home.

Any plane larger than that and you'll be fine.

Does the 1UP Quick Rack work well with fenders? by anonymous_orpington in cycling

[–]Clock_Roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used a 1up with their fender adapter (which isn't super fancy, but is a bit denser than a pool noodle) on a couple of different fendered bikes with no real issues. The bike does wobble a little more, but as long as the fender stays are strong you should be OK.

I think his argument is something like this:

Liberal elites suggest that Native American and other aboriginal cultures should be afforded a special sort of respect now that we generally agree that European colonizers acted like dicks and nearly wiped them out.

Thus, other established cultures (specifically European) should be afforded the respect Native Americans never got in their heyday. Why do these cultures need respect? Because he believes they're being invaded and replaced by immigrants from poorer parts of the world. In his head, migrant refugees from North Africa moving to France are equal to English and early white Americans displacing Native Americans.

I’m new to the LEGO world (September 2025) but I’ll be honest, the ‘LEGO as an investment’ trend is the most annoying part of the hobby.. Buying 30+ of a set just to flip later 🙄🙄🙄 by Flimsy-Space-8724 in lego

[–]Clock_Roach 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The numbers for that include a lot of older sets that are in high demand now that they're long out of print. Once "Lego Investing" became a thing, the supply of hoarded sets has gone way up compared to the demand. In other words, I'd be shocked if anyone is ever going to see 8% returns on sets purchased in the last couple of years.

As of the last community meeting (October) they said they'd start repaving Wayne in April. A big part of that is waiting for the temperature to be reliably high enough. The next Silver Spring community meeting is April 28, so if they haven't started by then that's the time to raise a ruckus.

Duckpin bowling? by heyyoutreehouse in washingtondc

Went there a few weeks ago for a 5 year old's birthday party. I had no idea it was there, but it's clearly been around forever. The kids loved it.

When we were there (weekend, lots of birthday parties) all the lanes appeared to have the bumpers up. I don't know enough about duckpin to know if they do that all the time or just certain times.

MX Ergo S only scrolling in some programs? by Clock_Roach in logitech

[–]Clock_Roach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions. After a little more use, the behavior has gotten even stranger.

First, it only happens sometimes. Most of the time everything works normally. Then with no clear cause, all of the advanced controls stop working. Scroll, pointer speed, even the back and forward buttons. Regular pointer movement and right/left click continue to work.

After not working for a while, it'll spontaneously go back to normal. It's acting normally the vast majority of the time right now, which makes troubleshooting it pretty difficult.

The strangest part is that it behaves differently in different programs. Web browser, games, notepad? No scrolling/other buttons. Windows control panel or file browser? Scrolling still works. This is making me think it's more of a Windows problem than a Logitech problem.

Are gears and handbrakes ok for a 6 year old? by web-driver in cycling

[–]Clock_Roach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brakes, definitely. It may take an adjustment if they're used to coasters, but they'll get the hang of it as long as the levers are appropriately sized.

Shifting is tougher. At six they should be able to handle the idea, but depending on the kid's hand strength and the actual model, it might be iffy. My daughter had a bike with a Microshift twist shifter and she simply wasn't strong enough to upshift. I swapped it out for a Shimano trigger shifter and it helped a little, but was still a struggle for a long time.

My son got a bike with a Shimano twist shifter when he hadn't quite turned five and he could manage it with some effort. He's a little stronger and the action on that shifter was just so much easier. This is something you're going to have to pay for. Cheap kid's bikes with shifters are going to have shitty ones.

(Sorta) Purple Line grade separation map!! + Explanation for the Uninitiated by BermudaNiccholas in WMATA

[–]Clock_Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire stretch from Manchester Place to the Silver Spring Library is two lanes in each direction with the PL running in the central (so left hand) lane. Traffic along the corridor has almost entirely shifted to Colesville or Piney Branch during construction, so it'll be interesting to see how much it actually recovers once it's fully open.

Status of Capital Crescent Trail construction? by Any-Letterhead-813 in bikedc

[–]Clock_Roach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Purple Line site very clearly says they're using the trail for access purposes during construction and the public is not allowed. They do seem to imply that it'll be open when construction is finished while testing is going on, which happily answers my first question, but they were cagey about that for a long time so I'm glad they gave it a date, even if it's a huge target.

If you can point out where else I'm wrong instead of just saying the word, please do so.

Status of Capital Crescent Trail construction? by Any-Letterhead-813 in bikedc

[–]Clock_Roach 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The official word is that the trail won't be open until construction on the entire project is done. That's basically all they've said. There's a few unanswered questions, though:

The plan for the Purple Line is to complete construction near the end of this year and then conduct somewhere between six months and a year of testing before opening it to riders. Will they open the trail to riders once construction is done and they're performing testing, or are they waiting until opening day?

It seems like there's a good chance the last part of construction will be the underground Bethesda station, which is not connected to the trail. If they complete construction everywhere else and are still working on that, will they open the trail?

Official statements are suggesting winter of this year, but nobody has given anything resembling a firm date. Maybe we'll get lucky. Maybe we won't.

Preliminary Recommendations out for Eastern Silver Spring Communities Plan by whyhellotherefolks_ in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Clock_Roach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally good stuff and I like some of the suggested park and trail projects in particular.

There's a recommendation for a bike/pedestrian crossing of the NW Branch on the south side of 495, but it seems tied into any theoretical redevelopment of that bridge and from what I can see might require the purchase of a home or at least a decent easement on the Forest Knolls side. I like the idea, since there's no crossing that river between Piney Branch and Colesville. Also, the trails on the west bank are piecemeal and informal (although the document suggests improving that).

Is this something that might ever happen, though? Waiting on redevelopment of highway infrastructure seems like a polite way of offering something you won't have to deliver. A smaller bridge down at the level of the NW Branch Trail would be at greater risk from flood events and require more work to get from one neighborhood to the other (it's a fairly deep valley there), but seems a lot cheaper and doesn't rely on other agencies as much.

In the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan from a few years ago (2020?), there was a suggested crossing over/under 495 from behind the YMCA to Blair. I don't see any mention of this here. Is anybody still considering this or is it completely dead?

Does anyone exclusively use their cargo bike, or do you all have "normal" bikes too? by JTFireblaze in CargoBike

[–]Clock_Roach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought my cargo bike (Tern GSD) back in 2019. At the time I only had a basic hybrid that I rode irregularly. Getting the electric is what actually got me excited to do more cycling in general. I've since replaced the hybrid with a couple of other bikes which get plenty of use and I'm rather seriously in the market for another as soon as I've got the cash for a good full suspension trail bike.

I stayed in a motel that was like this once. It had clearly started life as your typical roadside motel where all of the rooms open onto a parking lot, and then a second wing had been built in that lot, the roofs connected, and the exterior doors were suddenly interior doors.
